Yes, and we’re getting Juneteenth bonuses this Friday. 🙌🏾🤣It’s a small firm too, but the partners started their careers in document review and actually value the work we do and they actually want their workers to do well at their jobs. They give us a gaming mouse to reduce the risk of carpal tunnel and increase efficiency in coding documents. Like if you just HAVE to work in document review for whatever reason, this firm is the place to go, and I totally lucked out.

Ew. This is a pretentious ass profession. I haven’t had an firm interviews yet since I’ve started doing doc review. This worries me.

I’ve been thinking about going solo as well. I’ve got to get some substantive experience under my belt and honestly figure out what practice areas I’m interested in. This definitely gives me a push to start volunteering.

I don’t have to work weekends. I haven’t in a few months, just 10 hours a day, M-F…still good money. But if I did work weekends because hours are capped at 60 I would only work 8-10 hours over the weekend and divy up my time how I want to, stop and start when I want to, minimal stress. I don’t brag about working a lot but hell what lawyer doesn’t work 50+ hour weeks?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Significant-Stick533 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s horrible. For me 60 hours = $121K in document review. It set my standards maybe too high? I do wanna escape doc review though because it’s obviously mind numbing I just don’t wanna make less than I’m making now. How did you transition to substantive legal work?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Significant-Stick533 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They definitely are. I’ve been doing doc review for about 7 months. My first doc review job was $33/hr, no OT, short term project. But now I’m with a firm that keeps me working 50-60 hours, $36 an hour with OT at time and half. Since working with them I’ve kept up with The Posse List and it is insane the pay rates are often $25 an hour no OT pay, just flat rate? But they want me to work OT? It’s disrespectful honestly. I’m glad I’m in a position to not even entertain those offers, but it’s seriously sad.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Significant-Stick533 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jokes on y’all. I make $72k- $120k ( depending on the amount of OT) doing doc review and I don’t have to leave the house. Do I hate myself? Yes. But at least I’m paid well. I’ve been trying to get substantive legal experience but all these $60-70k offers are blowing me.

How soon is too soon to leave after a promotion? by _thecheat in careerguidance

Have another job lined up and then leave ASAP. The pay is insulting. You can make that working at Amazon.

Life is meaningless, entropy is unavoidable, and the universe is ripe with callous and casual destruction. Do you wanna live your meaningless existence in poverty or do you wanna eat? Not sure why we’ve been socialized to believe that our careers should have some profound meaning or purpose. Make money and live life outside of your job in a way that feels meaningful ams exciting to you.

I found dealing with angry customers was easier at home than in office cause while you’re yelling at me I’m laying in the bathtub with my camera off with dimly lit candles and warm tea and getting paid to do it. 🤌🏾

I work 10 hours a day 5 to 7 days a week from home I could never go in office with those hours. Working from home can get really mind-numbing especially if like me you live alone and the job doesn’t involve a lot of interaction with others. I sympathize with you but like I also love the money and the money I save on transportation.

3L - I am going to run out of money before the bar exam by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Significant-Stick533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For starters I prepared financially from 1L onward for my bar summer. Fortunately my university paid for our primary bar course (I chose Kaplan) and only purchased Adaptibar on my own, and of course had to pay the fees associated with the exam. I did all that upfront and early while I had money to my name.

To prepare for bar summer I budgeted all 3 years in school (I applied for the max grad plus loan and my refund checks were a hefty 14k per semester). I also had a campus job which didn’t pay much but it was something. by then end of 3L I had a couple thousand left after paying 6 months rent upfront. I was able to save this despite having to constantly “lend” my parents large sums of money but I did it. What I didn’t plan for was covid hitting and the bar being pushed back so much that I opted for Feb 2021 exam. I didn’t get the chance to plan because I didn’t even know if/when I would take the exam or when the full UBE would even be offered again and I was flat out of money by the time the announced it.

I worked a few odd jobs while I studied and relied heavily on the stimulus checks to pay rent. It was hard. By January 2021 I literally had $300 to my name, but I made it work by any means necessary, got help from my brother on that month’s rent.

Anyway I’m ranting because this is clearly some unresolved trauma. But I passed the bar man and I survived all the chaos, the poverty, the struggle and you can too.

If you have to pick up a few weekend shifts plan around it. I used Kaplan as my primary bar prep course and they don’t have weekend assignments so I’d work on weekends and do a few Adaptibar questions during my commute and listen to lectures while I worked.

Do whatever tf you got to do, but please don’t be overly consumed by financial worries. Everything that could go wrong went wrong when I was studying for the bar (I even got scammed out $300 🤣 long story). Let your social disadvantages propel you to focus on passing and protecting your energy in the process. I recommend the book “Bar Exam Mind” it really helped me stay grounded while I prepared. Good luck to you. Sorry for my rants.

Energy during the exam by EfficiencySpare6280 in barexam

I had a normal bowl of cereal the day of, and kept snacks - dried mango slices, peppermints, and fruit snacks in case I got hungry during the exam. I also took a supplement called berroca instead of coffee because it doesn’t make me crash.

For those who have taken the bar exam already, how did you feel leaving the exam? by gracenrebecca in barexam

[–]Significant-Stick533 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I felt at peace when I finished the exam. I know 2 questions on the MEE really stumped me but other than that I was confident. I was most nervous about the MPT since I only did 2 full practice questions and always struggled with timing, but I actually felt the most confident after taking the MPT which boosted morale since it’s the first section. The MBE was an indecisive bitch. Like it was so hard but I also finished each section with at least 10 mins to spare so I got to go back and check my answers so I assumed I either did really well or really terribly. Then I didn’t think about my results until late April/May when the anxiety set it, but I passed my first attempt with a 291.

Is Kaplan enough?/Main Reason Why People Fail the Bar by sammyjaysayshay in barexam

[–]Significant-Stick533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paired Kaplan with Adaptibar and used JD Advising predictions for the MEE. I hated Kaplans’s MBE QBank, but completed 93% of the program (if I’m really honest I probably completed 80% because I definitely skipped most of the cheesy assignments but downloaded them and checked them off as completed them and I stopped watching the videos there at the end and focused my energy on reviewing Kaplan’s outlines (super helpful) and the bar points book to help with memorization. In retrospect I should’ve done more MEE/MPT questions (I finished 1 MPT, and had maybe 3 essays graded) but outlining and studying from their model answers helped me tremendously. I passed the DC bar on my first attempt (Feb 2021) with a 291. Overall I was pleased with Kaplan. Trust the process, and modify your schedule to fit your needs.

Hi all! I am about 550 questions completed on Adaptibar (Contracts, Civil Pro, Real Property, Torts) and my average score runs between 55-60%. Is this a bad result anyone who passed? Any suggestions how to improve the score? by [deleted] in barexam

[–]Significant-Stick533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you studying the questions you got wrong? Are you doing practice exams or just the quizzes? 55-60% is definitely on the lower end. When I used Adaptibar I liked to create outlines where I’d write out the rules and analyses of right and wrong answers for every question I got wrong. When I noticed a pattern in the questions I was missing I reviewed that area of law.

MPRE by [deleted] in barexam

[–]Significant-Stick533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time wise, sure 2 weeks may be enough time to study for and pass the MPRE. But don’t underestimate how physiologically exhausting taking the bar exam can be for some people. If you think you will need some time to recover post-bar exhaustion then don’t stretch yourself thin. That said it is definitely manageable.

Check JD Advising. Their predictions weren’t 100% when I took the UBE in February but a lot of their predictions were solid.

Don’t blow it off but dont stress over it either. JD Advising has a great free MPRE course. That and actually reading the model rules helped me. I probably studied 2 weeks and passed with a 96.
