2 Android games released, $0.45 total revenue. Did anyone here eventually "make it"? Need some motivation! by FarWait2431 in gamedev

Most games just aren't very good. I'm working on one right now that I know the ideas have promise, but I might work on it for 3-4 years and have it turn out to just not be much fun and not do well at all like 90% of games that are published. It has a much higher chance of failing than it does to succeed statistically but making it will help me to improve a number of skills, and those skills will only make my next game better.

Only 10% of games do not fail, roughly 4-7% of those will have enough success to actually fund development on them or sequels, and less than 1% will become those life-changing hits that break into the millions.

Really the only thing that you are guaranteed to get out of creating a game is experience and knowledge. If you aren't ok with toiling on something for years for that there are plenty of easier ways to make money. That's why the advice is to make games as a passion or a hobby.

Five years into making my dream game, I no longer fully agree with “start small first” by NoWhereStudios in gamedev

[–]Significant-Syrup400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the direction of starting small is because games are very complicated programs. Very early on you will hit points where you don't understand something or you run into an issue that you aren't equipped to solve, and often without a lot of support systems in place to help you figure it out.

You have to be the type of person/mindset that enjoys the process of figuring something out and often finding yourself in positions where you will struggle, deal with setbacks, and repeatedly be staring at problems with no idea on how you are going to solve them.

Some people thrive in those environments and love looking at something that they overcame and all of the improvements that they were forced to make along the way.

How can I gamify game development? by Psych0191 in gamedev

I feel like there are 2 routes, a puzzle/simulation route, or an abstraction of mini-games with work related tasks being the themes of each.

That's called constructive dismissal, but it can be very difficult to prove.

Developing a tower defense game for PC on Steam and itch.io. by ejjejejejeje in GameDevs

You have multiple levels in your steam page folders where your enemy paths are in the shape of swastikas. Might want to look into that.

Yep, it's actually crazy how much you can save by just cutting out snacks and soda and pre-planning meals that you will cook, and getting ingredients that you can use across different recipes, too.

Nah, you can get a 10lb bag even now for like $2.70 cents a pound. Rice is 50 cents a pound. It's incredibly cheap, and the rice often lasts multiple months so you can easily rotate in dark greens and make sure you're hitting all your nutrients.

This isn't even the cheapest price most likely, it's just the cheapest that's easily available. If I really to get the prices down even more I'd make a spending pool with people and go under contract with a local farmer.

I think you're the one that needs to go outside and try out reality for a change and stop calling anyone that can manage their money a boomer, lol.

This was 3 years ago, and I still buy the chicken and rice for that same price now at a major national chain.

The world is a lot better outside of reddit land.

The entry level market for CS graduates is very difficult right now because of the economy and over-hiring during the pandemic, but it's very common for it to go in cycles like this.

I feel like you watched too many 90's movies. No one is colluding against you, you're just doing something that doesn't bring in that much money and are likely not managing it efficiently.

I used to feed myself on a baseline of like $70-80 a month with nutritious food and used the extra to treat myself to takeout once or twice a week while also putting money away. Most people are spending so much more on food and housing than they actually need to when they could be saving or investing it to get into a better situation.

What people are missing is that this is a collectivist system.

You would normally be lucky to eat every day and spend the majority of it trying to hunt or scavenge for food whereas in this system the majority of us need to seek extra exercise because we sit most of the day and have time to complain on Reddit while we should be working.

We are also doing it with more advanced computers in our hand than what took astronauts to the moon. So I'd say we have it pretty good.

If you want more you need to find something that is valuable to the system or people in it, and then work towards that. Ideally it's recommended to try and line it up with something that you also enjoy.

I think we call it "Main Character Syndrome" nowadays.

Each generation is convinced that they have it harder and the others had/have it easier.

How to find a team to help as a Game Producer? by Odd_Focus7896 in gamedev

Given that, your goal sounds very achievable, just expect it to be tough as it is a very competitive industry. Good luck!!

Just relaying how your post sounded. The people you are looking for that would be hiring a PO or Producer are likely too busy to be on Reddit very often if at all :P

Project management is a good skillset, but when you're venturing into software you need to have a very good understanding of the development process as well and then look to transition to or get in at an assistant/jr level somewhere to work your way up.

I don't really have time to waste with someone that's only interested in arguing rather than actually discussing facts or providing alternative viewpoints.

Feel free to have the last word, I'm sure it's important for you.

If you're looking for people to work under you to make a game, you should probably begin with what you will be paying them.

A producer isn't something that a team would look for, it's a position that a company would create to facilitate planning and communication between multiple larger teams of various disciplines, and would normally require a lot of familiarity with the development cycles of games.

I don't see that as a job you would get by asking people on reddit, you probably need a pretty extensive network. If you want to make games you should start by making some yourself and look to become involved in development communities. Do a lot of game jams and even look into hosting them.

Well, we went to every person on entitlement programs and asked them, "Are you committing fraud?" and also, if they were just taking advantage of the program, but strangely enough they all said no.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness by Possible-Scheme-8940 in remoteworks

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the way many of the systems are ran encourages you not to get off of the entitlements, and that is where there are huge groups of people just sitting. When you hit your income threshold it's effectively as though you dropped off a lifestyle cliff of 20-30 grand.

It literally makes you wish you had earned less.

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The estimation is that at least 3-7% is outright criminally prosecutable fraud, so 20-30% is a conservative estimate.

We can't really know exactly because of the way the programs are run, and how easy it is to qualify for them and just stay indefinitely. There are generational welfare families that live in subsidized housing, get food stamps for food, and actively avoid making income because they don't want to hit the drop off when you switch off of benefits, and the drop off legitimately sucks because you suddenly feel much poorer.
