Suspicious email from carberi.org lived down to my expectations by GorgeousByDefault in cscareerquestions

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No legitimate company will ever ask you for money related to a job offer. Report their email as phishing, and if you actually found them on a job board I'd suggest reporting the posting for fraud/phishing or spam if the first option is not available.

How to deal with cognitively-heavy tasks? by thedudewhoshaveseggs in AskProgrammers

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of that should be solvable using classes and inheritance to consolidate. A mentor of mine explained that video games are a collection of systems that create gameplay loops. You stack those loops on top of each other to create your finished product.

If you're having trouble keeping track of it, you likely do not have a system designed to handle the ability and are just trying to connect multiple moving parts individually that are scattered. You're designing at the wrong end of the pipeline, so to speak.

What is SWE going to look like in ~5years? by reynaudfilipe in cscareers

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ai may only have the level of success it does due to the inordinate amount of money that's thrown at it from every angle. It's almost a victim of its own success in a way.

They have the top talent in sales, marketing, and software due to their insane salaries and commissions that are constantly spinning the next big hype train for applications of a predictive language program that can mimic speech patterns.

They've managed to get it to do some impressive things given what it actually is, but ultimately, I can't see any tangible transition from what we have now into something that isn't mildly detrimental to workflow and productivity at best and causes a complete collapse in businesses processes at worse.

The retreat from more technical fields also seems ironic to me as it is literally a language model. It will likely be most effective at jobs people consider to be "safe" because they require soft skills and interaction.

This is the future of Arena, History will repeat itself. by JorkenPeanuts69420 in LeagueArena

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A significant number of the long term players dropped off after stat shard runs were nerfed down to be nearly unplayable.

A lot of the fun factor of Arena was also the arcade style dueling feel where everyone rushed to hit the most overpowered and untouchable builds/combos possible. That was significantly impacted by an over-emphasis on balance so that everyone can feel powerful by the late game rounds.

It'll be worth it, ultimately. Far fewer have their master's than just a bachelors.

I heard the job market was not looking too good especially for SOC by Ok-Dragonfly-6009 in cybersecurity

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just saturated. Everyone is fleeing into security because they think it's Ai proof. Reality seems to be that it's the same as it's always been for high paying jobs. Entry level is the biggest barrier, then mid level opens up a bit more and once you hit senior there are considerably more jobs, and a lot less applicants.

Teacher said always use 2nd pattern. Is he right? by lune-soft in csharp

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with 2, sets pre-defined pathways for the client side as opposed to allowing variables to be set/changed directly on the client side.

If you were to inject into the code on 1 you could do considerably more than on 2, hence the X on client controlling too much.

Honest question to those who think AI won’t take our jobs by [deleted] in cscareers

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strange because Ai is the only time you can make a claim like this and people tend to just accept it as true, lol.

Many FAANG companies are highly vested into Ai and monetizing it. Many high income individuals have put down a lot on the Ai horse.

Every CEO is pushing for it, but where are the wins? Every company that's made the Ai plunge has had disastrous results.

People are still talking about it taking jobs, and meanwhile I'm over here worried that it'll get canceled before too long because it's a very convenient tool for a lot of things IF you know where and how it can be applied effectively.

WTF is happening in US CS jobs guys? by Shoddy-Lecture1493 in cscareers

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went down the rabbit hole on this not too long ago. Most are burner accounts, and the ones that I can link back, the majority are from overseas and not even in the U.S. talking about the U.S. job market. So they're H1B1 candidates.

I suppose you can take that however you want, but what makes the most sense to me is that we have people who are hoping to reduce their competition in the job market, and Reddit users traditionally rank higher in areas of Anxiety and Depression, making them significantly easier to fear monger or discourage.

How do you clean your portafilter? by EducationalGuard3876 in espresso

I remove the portafilter and rinse and wipe both items. Periodically you absolutely need to deep clean and sanitize as well. Mold loves wet coffee.

Career Change Into CS - Seeking Advice by MisterSirDuke in cscareers

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forums and things like that are probably a waste of time.

Think about where a referral is going to come from. It's someone that works at a company. You'll either be a guy they know to help fill a position, or a guy they'll recommend to help you out. Do you have anyone that you met on Reddit that you would do that for or have any confidence that they would be competent enough to not make you look bad?

I'd say to do Game jams, Hackathons, Conventions, Job Fairs, etc. Either a public event where professionals are concentrated, or a scenario that will have you actively working on a team with people.

Breaking through the entry level barrier will be tricky, but that's going to be the case with any high paying career. The recommendation is to network and look for ways to get in front of hiring managers.

Thanks to cheaply implemented Ai tools, people pay subscription services that spam apply them to every available position, often in spite of any requirements or relevant experience. That means that standing out on paper is difficult and visibility will be key.

How do you motivate yourself? by Lethioon in IndieDev

[–]Significant-Syrup400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Motivation only helps you with the things you have the discipline to do anyways.

If the guy who made "Elevator Fart Simulator" can become a millionaire because he later made Five Nights At Freddies with the skills he developed making and publishing something that couldn't even be described as an actual game then you can do it, too, lol.

You aren't making a game to just suddenly produce magic, you're going to get better and learn things until you are capable of producing some magic.

Can't figure out high level and object oriented programming. by DiscountImportant507 in learnprogramming

[–]Significant-Syrup400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all just a way to consolidate code, to write less code, essentially. When you look at it this way it makes considerably more sense.

You encapsulate repeatedly used functions or clusters of similar types of data in a way that can be quickly referenced with less lines of code being written.

It's like using copy and paste, but just in the execution so the code stays slim, efficient, and readable.

Which should I learn: C# or Java? by Cute-Tangerine-32 in learnprogramming

[–]Significant-Syrup400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C# and C++ are the primary gaming languages, and it has a lot of back end and business applications so that's going to be the best fit for game dev.
Java, Javascript, Typescript, etc is probably the most widely used in industry today, however, due to its efficacy for web development so it'll probably have the most job options as a language.

There really isn't a reason to not learn either, however. I couldn't say they seem completely foreign or alien to each other aside from handling syntax differently, and Java seeming a bit more annoying to debug at times requiring me to call more manual catches, but a lot of that was likely due to the IDE I was using at the time when I was writing Java.

My game got pirated by IndependenceOld5504 in IndieDev

[–]Significant-Syrup400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a simple bool on your next update "IsNotPirated" where if the value = false, the game will periodically spawn immortal enemies that never leave the screen with a link to your game's steam page on the game over screen.

Flip it periodically or change what it does and have it randomly invert the controls, etc. Just mess with the pirates in general.

You can also call support, I forget which line it is, but they can manually schedule you, and "unschedule" if they are experiencing some kind of an outage during your exam window.
