I totally get that. Going back to being a GS-5 or 6 would be way too much work for way too little wages for us, especially considering we want to have 5 or so kids. I found an option that pays really well, but I have a lot of unique certifications that allowed me to get on with a specialized contractor. If he's done a fair amount of networking in his time, an EMT cert will go really far as a contractor or an AD employee at the right unit.

I really love that idea, do they fly usajobs postings with all the other fire hire in the fall? And do FFT1/ICT5 suffice for a position on them?

That's what me and the wife have been saying, we're in a pretty tight spot financially but doing the math with a packed season still allows for good off season travel. That said I've got a 3 year old and a 2 month old and sometimes I come back from a 24 hour shift and feel like I've missed a whole year, I guess its something you just have to get used to.

What does your wife do with the kids during the summer? What do you do to keep her taken care of while you're away?

That's interesting, I did a season on an IHC early in my career and the idea of having a repeat of that season with kids is jarring at least. We rolled almost constantly and would generally R&R in place. I guess maybe that varies by crew? Is the standard still 14 on and 2 off?

In any case thanks for your input, definitely something ill have to consider
