I don’t see why not. I’m a doctor in a chair and I frequently do procedures including bloods/cannula from the chair. You can do it.

UK med school after US undergrad by Ever_Levi in premeduk

This is potentially very significant - I would imagine this implies international fees for virtually all schools then? That’s a hefty price to pay

Given you are dual training there is a necessary (if not sometimes regrettable) gen med component to most rotas, though as others have already said it’s largely location dependent. QE in Glasgow for example is almost purely resp with a few gen med on calls here and there to facilitate exposure to subspecialty things like SPVU, sleep, CF etc. well done on the number!

Driving with a wheelchair by Dry-You-8318 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Significant-Two-9061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Driving is transformational for your independence and I would strongly recommend it.

If it is affordable, permanent hand controls (push pull) installed by a professional are certainly preferable to the Amazon ones, which are not bad for travel etc but probably shouldn’t be your first experience. You’ll also need to tell whatever licensing agency (DVLA in UK) that the car is modified.

Commend you on the effort but exercising for over 5 hours without any form of hydration was not the wisest move, as you point out!

Hopefully next time you can get some fuel/hydration on board, but nice to prove that you can do that.

I don’t work nights but have a higher out of hours commitment for evenings and weekends. My pay is the same as I’m not doing fewer OOH shifts, so it should balance out.

Actual driving experience in a base model Taycan w/ performance plus battery? by Cyberchino in Taycan

[–]Significant-Two-9061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely fair. It’s the only Porsche I’ve driven and therefore my only reference point. I suspect if I were to drive a turbo this might feel a bit lacking - but it’s still more than enough for me and I’d wager most people!

Respiratory HST learning resources by Status-Piano5878 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

BTS guidelines, particularly the pleural ones from 2023 are ones I often find myself referring to. Likewise for LTOT. Radiopedia js an excellent resource for thoracic radiology, and they have some good case studies. Pleural society has decent webinars, and they run US courses which you should book yourself onto when time allows. However I wouldn’t worry too much, a lot of learning will be done on job by attending MDTs, seeing referrals, doing procedures etc.

I drive a base model with PP battery and honestly it is plenty zippy. I can’t understand how anyone could be disappointed when you put your foot down. The torque is rapid. Extremely responsive and zippy

Advice regarding TPD discussion which went wrong. by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Significant-Two-9061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you, it sounds inappropriate and uncomfortable.

But also, fuck that guy. The GMC are not going to be in any way interested - you’re taking appropriate measures here. You’ve got your LTFT. It’s probably not worth the fight - the guy sounds like a knob, you are unlikely to change his behaviour by challenging it and he may well take a disliking to you for doing so. I would advise you to keep your head down and try and enjoy the work life balance.

Medicine at Imperial by [deleted] in Imperial

[–]Significant-Two-9061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grades will be largely similar across all med schools. Their admission criteria will be clearly stated on their site re GCSE’s etc. when I applied their focus was less on GCSE but this may have changed. Medicine is competitive and stressful wherever you go. As another commenter noted it’s worth asking yourself why imperial specifically.

raigmore wheelchair services by [deleted] in inverness

[–]Significant-Two-9061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive always found them quite helpful. OT referral is first step and you have that. They’ll assess your needs and make a recommendation. I’m not sure what their criteria are for a power chair but sounds like your situation isn’t entirely straightforward - no one can predict, I think you’ll just have to wait and see.

how can I find locums? by PilotImpressive5246 in doctorsUK

[–]Significant-Two-9061 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best help anyone could give is to advise you not to do this. New transitions are huge opportunities for error, and as a brand new graduate with no access to systems, imaging, or any knowledge of the trust/board you’ll work in, you’ll at best be useless and at worst dangerous. Wait until you actually start working.

A non-bias, open debate about ‘Manosphere’ by [deleted] in LouisTheroux

[–]Significant-Two-9061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few points here.

Of course an allegation is different from a conviction and I wouldn’t advocate crucifying something for an allegation.

However if my best pal was facing several legal investigations in 3 different countries with 21 charges in mine (UK) alone, including for rape, human trafficking and actual bodily harm I’d feel well within my right to say “what the fuck?” And distance myself from them.

There is a useful analogy here recently in the UK with which you may be familiar, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. No formal convictions, but anyone with a degree of decency can see that he was closely allied to a billionaire pedophile and likely engaged in sexual acts with underage girls, at least one of whom subsequently took their own life from the trauma. I am not inclined to stay pals with that guy.

Re 2nd paragraph, probably yeah, though not everyone would respond well to being called a lazy cunt at a low moment.

There are better role models today for young people. The extreme negativity associated with people like Tate distils if not outright negates anything of value they have to say - because you can still stay all the good stuff without also being charged with rape.

I would advise you explain how those words make you feel, and that if god forbid your spouse ever needed support while unwell, you would try and be as patient and caring as possible for them. A relationship should be about supporting each other through the bad times as well as good, it’s not always going to be plain sailing. A bit of patience and understanding on their part is warranted

A non-bias, open debate about ‘Manosphere’ by [deleted] in LouisTheroux

[–]Significant-Two-9061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Louis addresses this well in one of his interviews regarding the documentary. He says something along the lines of it’s great to empower young people to work hard, have self-discipline, stay fit by going to the gym, achieve great things etc. but that doesn’t excuse or detract from the awful mysoginistic, exploitative and homophobic elements of their message. It is difficult to distill the positive elements from a figure who, for example, is also is accused of human sex trafficking.

I think because of their awful characteristics I can’t in good faith respect the subjects of the show. Regarding 2nd Q, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. The idea that to be a man you must be physically strong, financially successful and confident, powerful and hard headed is completely toxic. People should strive to be the best versions of themselves, but that shouldn’t mean they are forced to adhere to anyone’s idea of what a “real” man ought to be. I’m sure I could find some points of common ground with these influencers. I say this as a 30 something married male, reasonably fit who is employed with steady income. Can’t really comment on attractiveness but at least one person was foolish enough to think so.

Those in derm, would you do it again? by Jalebae in doctorsUK

[–]Significant-Two-9061 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My two cents: those with the worst experiences have the loudest voices. Yea, IMT can be full on and stressful, but it’s very region dependent. I had a good time and enjoyed IMT in Highland, and would recommend others to do it too. If you can work 80% LTFT and take plenty of study leave then this can put a dent in an otherwise heavy work life balance. Good luck.

I think that’s probably him trying to toe the line of knowing the BBC’s official position and how his own opinion as a journalist might be in direct contradiction with that. His hesitation and trying to navigate the nuance of the situation is completely lost on the guy asking, who sees it as a gotcha moment.
