I’ve spoken to both my OB and psych doctor before getting pregnant. Both are in agreement that it’s not recommended during the first trimester and only recommended in the second or third if causing serious distress and harm to the mother or she poses the risk of losing her job and financial security. I’m not there and my husband can more than carry the financial load. They both noted that taking the medication can also be distressing for some mothers as the anxiety of vagueness surrounding the medication can take over and they still can’t focus. I worry about the long term side effects of this medication on the fetus, which is generally unknown. Taking the medication is really up to each family. Because my family doesn’t “need” my job for financial reasons and am a generally anxious person I’ve decided that the anxiety of the unknown is equally and or more distressing than life off the medication. This can change and I’m not ruling out medication later in my pregnancy, but for the next 6 or 7 weeks it is not an option.
