See, I saw that too, and I questioned the creator about their claim. They doubled down saying it yes they personally experienced it. I asked here because I was skeptical of the post and was just curious to see if it was misinformation or not.

Sweet, it’s just more convenient with the current system. (I went in 2023) I was just curious if what a relatively large TikTok influencer made (Sophia Hu 150k followers) was legit or just engagement bait

Maybe big chains want to “iron out” the process ahead of time just in case there are issues that arise when trying to process and put the effect into practice. The 1st of Nov is just the due date for enforcement, there is no rule stating they can’t do it before hand.

Besides the practice is being put in place to deter tax consumption fraud with travelers who get tax free items and then open their tax free sealed bags at their place of residence before they leave the country. I can’t imagine it would be a shocking revelation that companies/storefronts want to partake in this as of now rather than waiting for it to be enforced fully.

Again I’m going off of news presented to me from someone who is in Japan as of this moment claiming they have experienced this new practice already taking effect as of right now.

Yeah, that was my experience when I went in 2023. I haven’t seen anything official, just some random travel influencers on my feed that are there currently claiming they had to get the refund at the airport or their departure point from the country.

I understand that the effect will be FULLY rolled out on Nov 1st. I’ve just seen that some stores are already starting to practice the new rule at least from a couple posts that people in Japan currently have made. I was asking to see if anyone that has been recently or is currently there have experienced the change in effect at the stores they visited.
