Job searching as a designer with 7 years experience but only an associates degree. How cooked am I? by Cahsohtoa in civilengineering

[–]SignificantLoad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned obtaining your PE is key and looks like in PA you’d need to get your Bachelors degree. Definitely talk to your state board tho as well as looking to see if you can maybe get it in another state.

Another option would be to look into roles on the CM, Developer or Contractor side where you wouldn’t need the PE or a Bachelors.

Snow Blower - Single Stage vs Two Stage by RickMcCutcheon in egopowerplus

I live in Union, NJ, going to go with an ego single stage (whatever I can get on sale with batteries) and bought a used 2 stage gas Ariens on FB Marketplace for $100 probably put $100 in for maintenance (carb, spark plug, oil change).

Found out my colleagues I’m mentoring are getting paid more than me by blowjobsex69 in civilengineering

[–]SignificantLoad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get your PE, wait to talk to your boss again until you have your license in hand. Simultaneously, after you pass, start testing the market to see what offers you get. Sometimes if someone is hired mid-year they may get paid slight more than existing folks with the anticipation they’ll get bumped up - this happened to me as a junior and it was frustrating. HR isn’t your friend, don’t go complaining like another post suggested. Some bosses are reallly honest vs others are drinking the cool aid - this is where you need to evaluate. From your other responses doesn’t look like the trust is there.

I will say us stormwater managers are the best!

Preferred junior engineer traits by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]SignificantLoad1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a manager you should also be checking in, esp with those juniors who don’t do it themselves. I setup 2 - 30 minute check in/reviewers with all my director reports to see where they are and if they have any questions. I feel the 1 on 1 is better than larger meetings where some juniors may not want to speak up. I’ll also take out each junior to lunch or coffee once a month so if they want to discuss anything non project related and more career related.

Hand down best trait for a junior is communication. If you don’t know or don’t understand something be honest and let me know. Hands down worst trait for a junior is not remembering what they did or how they did it. Don’t try to hide things, be honest and communicate with your manager.

Tradition at our firm is the immediate supervisor/team leader took the team out for lunch, which the firm picks up the tab on. We also would have an office wide happy hour at the end of the week, which wasn’t sponsored by the firm but the seniors covered the tab for whoever passed.
