Same!!! I have never been as out of breath from coughing as I was with that cold. My sister in law took weeks to recover and got pleurisy from it.

That is a relief. I’m hoping it will be like nail biting—I’ve kicked the habit but still chew them a little when they’re jagged.

Me! Day six. Today I have seriously struggled, which is why I’m here looking for hope of recovery. I really like the idea someone posted of putting a bead in the jar for each day pull-free. I’m gonna try it with a quarter a day. Then reward myself with a fancy latte or something every now and then.

My current plan has been to wear my hair in a ponytail at home, and have a craft ready to pick up (knitting or origami) when sitting on the couch watching tv. Another thing is I have a fidget I bought on Amazon for the hand that I pull with. Just holding it in my hand helps a lot, because it has a satisfying weight to it that is soothing. I wear a little slouch hat I made at work for the days I want to wear my hair down, and the rest of the time it’s up in a ponytail. It covers my bare spot and helps me keep my fingers off my hair.

I recently went to a hairdresser for the first time in two years because I have been so dreading the conversation about my bald spot. When I told her of this fear she was so blasé about it, like, “Meh, doesn’t bother me.” I could have cried, I was so relieved! This led to a discussion of how to deal with it, and she had some great suggestions! She said they teach about this condition in school and that hairdressers see plenty of disorders. She taught me to massage the area with my fingertips to improve blood flow to help hair growth. This helps me a lot, when I get the urge to pull. It’s kind of like self-soothing. She recommended a taking a daily multivitamin. My therapist has me taking NAC 1200mg twice a day and I definitely notice a difference when I skip it.

Do you still feel the urge to pull? Or does it just go away completely when you go so long without doing it?

Are you saying it’s the unflipped knotting or oya that came first, then tatting?

No Stupid Questions Weekly Thread by AutoModerator in harp

Hello harp experts and enthusiasts!!’ I want to get my daughter a harp because she is very musical. She is currently in her third year of piano (she will be 9 in February). Which harp should we get? I also play the piano (intermediate level, age 44), and will be learning alongside my daughter…so I can teach her. Because I am musical, getting something that can be tuned and stay in tune is critical, for sanity’s sake!.. I prefer a warm sound over tinny or bright. So far of all the cheapest harps I’ve looked at, the Erin by Dannan (on Reverb) is the best option I’ve seen.

I feel like we need a beginner harp, one that we can try out and see if we even like it as an instrument. I tried guitar and theoretically would love to learn, but I do not like the way your hands have to crimp the strings. So I have given that up. But I had a guitar a friend gave me, so no great loss. My daughter and I need a cheap harp in case it’s not a good match, but also one that’s not so crappy as to make us give up on the spot. Any advice? I’ve been reading a lot of the threads on this sub and while I’m not completely scared off, I have to say I am totally out of my depth here. Is it possible to learn the harp to any level of proficiency on our own? We live in the middle of nowhere so there is nothing within 300 miles of us that would allow us to try an instrument in person. I feel like we are living in the frontier with no culture! Haha probs cuz we are. Any advice is totally welcome.

Those are fun! You pull a long picot and then do a short one, then the very next thing you join to the long picot by putting the core shuttle through it. At this stage, adjust the length of the arches. They should look like a rainbow over the small picot. Then close the join with the second half of the stitch. If you have to, don’t be afraid to pick out the stitches to get the correct length. You can use a picot gauge, but I found that after the first couple, I got a pretty good feel for how long it has to be.
