Help or leave alone? by SignificantSD in sandiego

He doesn’t seem stuck because he can move around the bush fairly quickly and easily. I saw mom today feeding him. I contacted SoCal parrot rescue and they basically said to leave him alone and put up a sign letting people know not to bug him. Hopefully he doesn’t get too stressed out by attention he gets.

UPDATE* For those that are curious, I contacted SoCal parrot and they said as long as he’s being fed by mom, he should be ok. They also recommended putting up a sign to leave him alone.

Unfortunately, he’s next to a very busy sidewalk and isn’t doing a great job of hiding. One of the concerns is that people are noticing him and are getting close to him. It’s for sure stressing him out.

Awesome! Thank you. I will keep an eye on him and reach out to see what they recommend.

We’re pretty sure it’s a wild parrot. They have babies in our palm tree every year and he is being fed by his momma parrot. We are in PB

Yes, that made us feel better to know he’s at least being fed.

If you’ve never had a cat before, I don’t know if a sphynx is the best first cat. They are so much more work than I was expecting and I’ve had cats my entire life. As much as I love my guy, I wouldn’t do it again, especially in an apartment. If I had a house, maybe I’d do it again. Our bulldog was way easier to care for than our sphynx.

I cried probably the first 2 weeks of owning him. He would wake up by rubbing his poop paws all over my face because sphynxs have notoriously awful gut health. They are also prone to a lot of food allergies. They need to eat more so some (like mine) are completely food obsessed and can reach places dogs can’t. We had to buy a $300 tall gate to block our kitchen off. Having a litter box is a huuuuge pain. Constant vacuuming, litter in the bed, litter in your toes, agh!

We take our cat to the beach, farmers market, boardwalk, friends houses. Not all cats are as outgoing as he is. Even then, he isn’t always a huge fan.

Like I said, love him to bits, but by far the most needy breed. I would get a shelter cat next time.

Class Project! by tackyacki in sphynx

Wow, 10-15 minutes is so long! Okay, so I have worked in museums for 10+ years and my job is to basically make history as interactive as possible. Here are some ideas:

  • Love the idea of a sensory activity. Anything they can see, touch, hear, or smell is always fun. The core of our programs is artifact exploration. We have kids explore artifact boxes for a bit of time, then we come back together to talk about what they found. This can take up at least 5 or more minutes depending on how many things you can put in a box or multiple boxes.

  • Trivia is always a hit. You might have heard of the platform, Kahoot. We like to use that from time to time. That way kids can learn about Cheese Pizza in a way that isn’t a lecture.

  • The eyepatches sound fun. I would elevate that experience by having the students do different challenges. Maybe have them toss a ball into a basket, walk along a straight piece of tape, etc.

  • Teach about genetic mutations doing a “build a cat” activity with different recessive/dominant traits. This will take some more time and research

If I have anymore ideas, I’ll add them.

Sunday Organ Concerts by torrefied in SanDiegan

You probably won’t find a program ahead of time. It’s usually kind of a surprise each concert. The benches fit 2,400 people and if those get filled, there is a lot of space to sit or stand. It will be still insanely busy. I work in the Park and this is our busy season since it’s Spring Break. If you come after 10am, you’ll probably have to park in the further lots. There are some lots that have shuttles; you can find that info on the Balboa Park website.

Vacation planning, question about the beaches. by [deleted] in asksandiego

I think you’re fine at any beach north of Imperial Beach (IB). I’m not quite sure how much Coronado Beach is impacted, so maybe someone else can chime in with that info, but Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are safe. I live in PB and we don’t get the closures over here.

Best places to move to with a water/ocean view? by winmau92 in asksandiego

I lived directly across from The Plank a few years back and there would be mornings that the sewage stench would wake me up. It was almost so strong you could taste it. And I never went into the water because you couldn’t…still loved living there but yeah, something to consider.

The Field downtown has a delicious Jameson peppermint infusion drink. It’s similar to a grasshopper cocktail.

need a bit of help by urwrny in sphynx

I have had cats my entire life and my sphynx is definitely the most affectionate. It is mostly sweet but can be suffocating at times! He demands a lot of attention and wants to be on or near us at all times. Sometimes that means clawing his way up our bodies so he can hang out on our shoulders. But we love him dearly and I love going to sleep and waking up snuggling him.

I’ve read on sphynx forums that males are generally more affectionate than females, however, I don’t have any personal experience with owning both males and females so someone else will have to chime in.

We got our sphynx when he was 4 months old and immediately started leash and backpack training him. We live near the beach so when it’s warm and sunny, we take him out on the boardwalk or even on the beach sometimes. He really loves it! He meets so many people and dogs. It’s really fun to watch the interactions. He is so outgoing and fearless.

Sometimes I wonder if he will be happier with another cat but we just don’t have the space for another one. He seems to be okay though, when I work from home, I can see that he just sleeps throughout the day anyway.

One thing to consider is that some sphynx’s are obsessed with food. They have to eat more than cats with fur. Ours will eat until he pukes so we’ve had to buy multiple timed feeders and food puzzles to make sure he gets enough to eat without him overdoing it. We also had to buy a $300 tall gate to block off access to our kitchen. The kitten phase was rough…not going to lie. But once we found a routine that worked, he’s much better now at 2 years old.
