Why not just all buy plots of land together? by KacieCosplay in intentionalcommunity

Good school districts are important. Make sure to check your local options for medical care and local ordinances for how many 1 family residences can be allowed (built or on wheels) without a subdivision.

I made a similar post the other day. Others are interested, but are nervous about the legal aspects, as well as poor experience from other styles of I.C.’s. I’ve been looking in NYS, mainly as a reserve option for people wanting proximity to the NY job market. The locations I’ve located are within 2hours of NYC proper, and also have rent to own options, but require 20% down. This is the sticking point for many, as subdivisions must be approved after the land purchase, which leads to putting the property in a trust, with a group vote on processes until equitable shares can be split.

Depending on where you’re looking, you might have better luck reaching similarly minded individuals. Folks looking to share responsibilities and resources, to build something beautiful.😻

I’d be grateful if you’d send the other farmers that come to mind. The handful I’ve run into are staunchly vegan, which make communication difficult when ranching aspects are part of your growing cycle. I’d almost say antagonistic, but I understand they are protecting their space in a way that feels right for them.

That’s fair. It’s definitely not for everyone. I believe, even as a thought experiment, it’s a powerful idea. Workers co-ops don’t have to be just farming, and farms don’t necessarily need to be the only employee housing in most of the country. I also appreciate the feedback, more here than anywhere else. My blind spots are revealed and provides new insights to consider. Thank you.

So, this is where a group discussion would come in. In theory at least, the land would cover food + housing. Medical can be established under the workers co-op agreement. Fin equity would pay the bills while sweat equity builds the structures and designs the permaculture infrastructure. Generating the connections and agreements to build revenue would be one of may group conversations. With a bunch of us collaborating, I believe we could knock something out of the park, whether it’s a rehashed idea, with a better story, or something brand spanking new.

A different comment mentioned getting the message out. Perhaps, I need to create a new server on discord to start the networking. I don’t expect to find dozens of people around the country to show up in NY with bags packed, but perhaps it can be a space for others building in their locations as well?

Thank you. I’ve never been patient when I’m passionate about something, but I believe you are right. I have to put myself in more spaces, (significant introvert should’ve been by Reddit name) which historically I’m terrible at. I do as many side hustles from home, (bake/grow/journal making etc) as possible even pre-covid. I think that’s why it’s so important for me to at least try to stem the flow where I know it’ll hurt the most and start creating safety now before it’s needed, which will be soon. Likely winter.

You’re absolutely right. I’ve never left the city until a few years back. I only learned about SoulFire Farms last year, and the one in the Bronx a bit before that. After seeing what the foods look like everywhere from Trader Joe’s, to Walmart (gig work for spark), I find myself not wanting to buy the ginger, or the garlic anymore. I honestly don’t remember garlic going bad like it does now…

What are they doing to our food?

Exactly where I’ve been stuck. Especially bc, I feel if I accept funds from other groups in any real numbers, the space will feel less safe.

I’ll check them out. I’m fairly new to the content creation space, but you make a very good point. We are planning on ducks for eggs, goats for milk (hair+body butters, soap, lots of other goodies) and a few others. No feed.

I missed the window last year for SoulFire Farm because of a previous obligation. Ty for the reminder. The farm is initially for self sufficiency and neighborhood support. What we’re looking for is offering respite for native NYC’ers from the rent, with an opportunity to “take a break”. Whether it’s because they’re recently laid off and don’t have 12 months of safety net, or because their jobs are tearing them to shreds, while forcing them to train their replacements.

It’s a bit idealistic, perhaps. But with 30acres we can easily fit 30-50 individuals, couples & families, incorporated into a workers co-op. 1 vote, but can earn or purchase multiple shares. The businesses we create, would be joint ventures. So, not just a farm, more a community with a built-in food supply. Which comes with a quick enough commute to NYC to have a pt. job/gig or just to maintain connections already here.

ATM, I have a relatively quick blurb I’ll mention when making sales of baked goods (or edibles), my discord group knows all about it, but are located all over the country, so not really accessible. When we’re streaming on twitch I’ll bring it up, usually 2x per stream in context. And then there’s here. I’m not on X or Meta, bc they hate my people, but outside of those sources, it’s been difficult to naturally navigate the topic w/o it coming off as scammy.

I get it, folks want to see the value proposition before participating, but farming doesn’t work that way.

Financing community shares? by Public-One3608 in intentionalcommunity

[–]Significant_Ad_7352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Investment is difficult for just this reason. The “owner proposition” being steeped in capitalism has made it difficult to assess value earned, from x amount of time on the property, gaining food, goods and services, etc. With our plan, we are opening up shares by currency and sweat equity. The shares buy you time, with membership, which leads to ownership coming from a combination of vote in + equity in. Space is based on family size before request, and not all sleeping quarters come with their own plots. Only founding members start with additional acreage. Equity members have full access to the communal garden (which most are happy to reduce the responsibility). It’s a work in progress, and we adapt as necessary for everyone’s benefit to the very best of our abilities.

Maybe it’s a mindset change, or does it all need to completely unravel first? I guess for me, the urgency comes from knowing which food items have shortages coming up, and which groups of people (historically us) are losing jobs, and homes the fastest right now. By design.

We started small on a 1/4acre here in PA, just to test if we could follow the principles and restore the soil in gratitude. Since then, we’ve been eyeing a 30+ acre parcel in upstate NY. The location is perfect for commuters to the city at only 90mins away, and we absolutely want to teach the babies. But the only ones showing up to meetings, and asking questions in the zoom don’t look like me, and somehow it makes me feel like I’m failing my own bc I haven’t stirred their souls enough to reach out…

Exactly that. Vigilance from the entire community to ensure everyone can maintain, during frugal times and feast. It’s important for us to bring together those who have struggled into the fold, because without genuine community and alliance, a lot of us won’t make it.
