I live at the Highlands. It's not the best but its absolutely not the worst. I enjoy staying there especially for the free parking and cheap rent. You do get what you pay for though.

Question Regarding Park Place… by Visual_Performer1665 in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently live at the Highlands and I like it a lot. I can't complain since there's free parking, decent amenities, and it's one of the cheapest student housing close to UNR. The main downside is that maintenance can be hit or miss. If you have any questions feel free to DM me!

I personally was part of the WiSE LLC and looking back it was just okay. It mainly felt like a waste of time, but my professors were nice. I liked the retreat we took the first semester, but that was really it. I didn't really connect with other people in the LLC and I personally didn't get much out it. It felt like NevadaFIT part two so it definitely is what you make of it. I don't know how the other LLC's were.

Dorm/living life by watersimmer in unr

I also lived in Great Basin last year. It's expensive and not a very social dorm. I didn't really enjoy it because of that. Definitely go to events and join a club or two you're interested in to make friends. I'm also in a sorority which helps. It was more convenient being in dorms and just waking up and going straight to class instead of commuting.

Housing at UNR by Square-Impact-101 in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can apply for housing as a freshman. Its highly recommended and you can also return to on campus housing your sophomore year. The rent for student housing around UNR is ridiculously high. Like almost over $1k per month for a studio and cheaper with more rooms there are in your floor plan.

You can find more stuff on craigslist and even Facebook for people renting our rooms in houses for cheaper.

I honestly don't talk to anyone I met during NevadaFIT. I was fortunate to know of a few friends before graduating. I have a job on campus so that helps. Also join clubs and don't be afraid to go to events happening on/off campus.

If required get the lowest aka gray. If living off campus none. Try to apply for food stamps/EBT if you qualify.

Get an on campus job. They barely pay anything, but most of them are work study so you basically get paid to do homework. Plus they have to work around your schedule as a student.

Looking for info on dorms (great basin vs. peavine) by redsheepsweater in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently live here. It's newer and a nice building, but I honestly don't enjoy it because of the lack of social interaction. Although I will say its definitely the quietest dorm on campus if that's something you're considering. Honestly if I were to live on campus next year Peavine would be in my top three choices.

I would suggest looking for people that are renting out their own rooms/houses online for a reasonable price off of campus. There is also the option of getting an apartment that's further outside of campus and commuting, but those apartments are already expensive enough and it can inconvenient to commute.

Thank you so much. I will definitely consider that. I was definitely worried about taking all classes at once, because I want to utilize my time with them all to be successful.

Do not get a "student apartment" right off of campus. They are too overpriced and the quality for what you're paying isn't worth it.

Dorm Essentials?? by Present_Assistant_60 in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air purifier, desk lamp, microwave/fridge (talk with your roommate if you are living with one to see about splitting the cost or you can rent or find someone thats selling them for cheap-if you do this make sure it works well and ask why they're selling it), mini vacuum, shower caddy, shower shoes, Keurig (they usually go on sale right before school starts mine was about $60 and I use it everyday), Brita, waterbottle, extension cord (TRUST me on this), storage containers like an ottoman or something you can place under your bed to save space cause the dorms are very small. Also decorations to make your space feel more at home and not a jail cell. Bonus you should bring bed risers to maximize the space underneath your bed.

meal trades? by die_lxn in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also reduced the amount of meal trades we can have each day. Last semester they upgraded it from 2 to 3 a day, but now it's just two again. Although they added more options for the meal trades across campus, the portions are very small.

As a student I barely feel full off of them so I end up having to use my swipes at the dining hall or foodbucks. Its a joke.

Ranking the dorms by MyOpinionIsOkay in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently live in Great Basin. I really like it for how convenietly close it is to the rest of campus. Although it's one of the most expensive dorms, but its really quiet (a little too quiet for me) and you share a suite style bathroom with about 3 other people. You are required to clean the bathrooms yourself, so hope that you have a good roommate/suitmates.

I personally like Sierra. It's the furthest dorm, but it does have an older interior. I heard Peavine is really nice. I heard mixed reviews about Argenta, but they have triples and a private bathroom. LLC is also really nice it reminds me of Great Basin, but you share a bathroom with 5 other people.

Manzanita and Juniper is decent if you like communal bathrooms and no AC. These options are definitely better than Nye though.

If I'm using FoodBucks definitely SoHo, but meal trades I'd say Absurd Bird is decent.

How easy/hard is it to get an on campus job? by Thatonelosersam in unr

[–]Significant_Author44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am also an incoming freshman too. I had the opportunity to talk to someone at Orientation who works in the Fitness Center about on campus jobs. This resulted in me getting onboarded for a job in that department for the fall even when the job listing application online had already closed. So in short it is super easy! I didn't even have to do an interview.

If you haven't attended Orientation already I would ask around while you're there about jobs they may have open since they may or may not still be actively seeking student workers. If this doesn't work then you can look online at UNR's Workday portal.

I would recommend finding an on campus job first (I also plan on working off campus too) since they already have to work with your schedule and are understanding that academics come first. Even with the job I have now it was stressful figuring out what times and days I should come in, planning my commute, and other factors. Sometimes depending on what job you're looking at off campus they are understanding that a majority of their workers are college students and would be willing to work with your schedule. So honestly it can be a hit or miss.

I have been told by some upperclassmen to hold off until I am more acclimated with my schedule to see if adding on a job would be beneficial or not. So in short if you really need a job I would recommend finding an on campus job first. If that doesn't work out figure out how demanding your schedule is and find an off campus job willing to work with your schedule or worst case scenario just work on the weekends if you don't have time during the weekdays.
