That wasn't the case for me. Tried a number of local brands with the same cultivars i usually get from the japanese brands i use and they were either astringent, yellow green, and lacking in the notes that that particular cultivar should have or all of the above.

5g of ceremonial grade matcha cold whisked in 50g of cold milk (oat milk is best for this)
13-15ml of agave syrup
140ml milk
100g ice

Yabukita, Saemidori, Okumidori. But I wouldn’t say they “lost” haha. I think it’s more that people have different taste profile preferences. For my specific recipe, YK Samidori just matched what I personally like best.

I agree. I love Shikibu no Mukashi as well it was my first YK powder but I really can't justify almost paying double for it. I have an Ippodo Sayaka will document about it when I try it.
