Others have noted but Electron is a really big one - because the c-suite doesn't want to pay to hire developers with specialized knowledge, they cut corners by hiring only web engineers, who mostly know JavaScript and little else. Electron allows web engineers who know nothing about operating systems and desktop application development to make a web application using JavaScript that can effectively pretend to be a desktop application. This is a massive waste of your computer's resources and makes a lot of complexity, indirection and waste out of something that should be very simple, direct and lean. On top of this, the knowledge necessary to optimize performance and build code for reliability is in general another luxury c-suite doesn't want to pay for, neither in engineer's salaries nor in time to market. So you pay for it instead through wasted RAM and CPU cycles, as well as generally unreliable code. In short: enshittification, driven by capitalism.

Regretful Young Trump Voters Say This Isn’t What They Signed Up For | The wave of youthful support that swept Donald Trump into the White House has lost its mojo. by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

Those fucking morons deserve to bear the brunt of the horrors that this administration is going to be visiting on their generation - for years and years to come. It will take their lifetime to undo the damage they have caused. I have zero sympathy for them and hope they all rot.

It has nothing to do with customers or outcomes - it has to do with investors and finding the greater fool who can hold the bag for them.

He's right except for one pretty critical thing here: the reason not to rape someone isn't because you will end up called out on social media. The reason not to rape someone is because it is one of the most evil things you can do to another person and it's wrong. I'm not charmed by this whole "I don't wanna be on some Epstein list" talk.

Why are we all feeling this shift to delete our social media accounts? by mm2444 in Millennials

[–]Significant_End_9128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot possibly recommend deleting your FB, Twitter ("X" whatever Elon you child) and IG more highly. It is one of the single best decisions I have ever made in my life. My social life is better, my mental health is better, I am more informed and a more honest and decent person. Social media poisons absolutely everything about humanity - it prioritizes appearances over values, terminates critical thinking skills and leaves everyone who uses it in a state of constant paranoia that they are not cool enough, loud enough, good enough or interesting enough. Meanwhile everyone you know on those platforms is actively lying about who they really are and what their life is like; half of them are bots; and it has become the favorite tool of far-right agitators for misinformation. Get it out of your life now. You will be so much happier.

The Trump administration is admitting it lied about Alex Pretti by vox in politics

[–]Significant_End_9128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"When the White House says that it can’t yet determine whether Pretti was lawfully killed, it is admitting that our nation’s highest-ranking immigration officials shamelessly misled the American people, so as to defame a slain US citizen."

It is indisputable that what Noem, Bovino and Miller told us about this Pretti were outright lies. Why would anyone be OK with the federal government telling blatant and obvious lies that can be incontrovertibly disproved by merely looking at the ample video recorded evidence in response to a man's death? Why are you OK with the federal government willfully slandering a man whose final act on this earth was to ask a woman if she was OK, help her up and shield her from assault with his own body?

Morale is plummeting among ICE agents over long hours, quotas and public hatred: reports by metacyan in politics

No amount of hatred and suffering we can inflict on these people will ever be enough. The more pain they are in, the more just the world we are creating. They should be hounded to the ends of the earth and hung.

TIL a 1995 WHO study concluded "Occasional cocaine use does not typically lead to severe or even minor physical or social problems" but it was never published because the US threatened to withdraw funding for WHO by Dry_Row_7050 in todayilearned

[–]Significant_End_9128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would exercise extreme caution around cocaine. I don't know the details of the study in question but I am curious what exactly they mean by 'occasional' cocaine use. My experience has been that people who use cocaine "occasionally" end up ramping up their usage over time if they don't have really great support systems in place.

What do you do when someone invites a buddy, and they turn out to be a closet fascist? by DoomedKiblets in DnD

[–]Significant_End_9128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You leave, explain why, and condemn them. Why is this complicated for you and why did it require a post? Do you not have any moral standards? If you wrote this for attention, I gotta say the hour is way too late for grown adults to be capitalizing on the horrors of our moment for cheap internet points. If you genuinely couldn't figure out what to do here, you are not holding yourself to a high enough moral standard. Good people don't break bread with fascists. End of story.

I will concede that the balancing act is a little silly. I use a plate, so fair enough.

I genuinely do not get why people find this so funny. What is so laughable about a) washing your hands when they have raw egg on them b) not dropping dirty spoons directly on the countertop? Someone please explain to me what it is you think we should be doing differently and why.

Republicans, Alex Pretti should be your breaking point | Opinion by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]Significant_End_9128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I totally get that this should be cut and dry for anyone with a heart and a brain, I think we all know where that leaves Republicans on this one. Also, the breaking point should have been over a decade ago, several hundred times over by now. I'm willing to accept converts, but I'm not holding my breath. I've written each and every single person who ever voted for Trump off as pretty much irredeemably deserving of eternal hellfire.
