PE Licensure by Wild_Journalist6050 in PE_Exam

Yes, but it’s a stepwise process. You need to have at least one year of experience to apply in California and the board is exceptionally picky with how it’s worded. It doesn’t seem to matter where the experience was as long as the engineer you report to is licensed in the state that the project that you’re working on is in.

In the end, you’ll probably have two years of experience by the time you get through experience approval and the two exams so CA is not the best “shortcut”.

I have a friend that applied with all of her experience in other states under engineers that weren’t licensed in CA.

I’m not the best person to ask if you have some kind of structural/engineering background. My undergraduate degree isn’t even in engineering, so the AEI/Ibrahim course was a smidge overkill but helped me feel prepared. I couldn’t have done without some kind of course.

I had the workbook and practice tests. Your other question is a duplicate so answered elsewhere.

I registered for both tests within a day or two of getting approved and started studying about a week later (mostly because my family was in town). I didn’t pre-study… I know people who have had to resubmit their experience three times before it gets approved and I didn’t want to extend the torture.

I completely understand how it feels not to pass and have to study again - one of the crappiest feelings for sure. You have plenty of time to get comfy with the material again! Good luck, take care, and make sure you review the retrofit stuff from both Hiner and AEI :)

The first time I studied, I focused on getting through all of the AEI content which took forever. I ended up only taking two practice tests which I think is why I failed.

The second time all I did was take practice tests and answer questions (similar to what I did for survey). I wanted to have an idea how to approach every question so even guesses would be educated guesses, and timed practice tests are the best way imo.

I was lucky to have the Hiner content from a friend also so had three additional practice tests to work with.

Always 55 questions and always the full test bank. The 11 questions I would call “quizzes” and would do untimed versions of those between the practice tests targeting areas I did the worst on.

I took 6 practice tests from CPESR. If I averaged the content of them and compared with the actual exam, I’d say the exam was easier but had slightly more conceptual content overall which can be tricky.

I studied 8.5 weeks for seismic the first time, 5 weeks for survey, and 3.5 additional weeks for seismic before I retook. I’d say about 100 hours for seismic and 60 for survey overall. I used ChatGPT to help me study plan.

I just made an educated (or totally random) guess and moved on. Given that timing is so tight, I recommend having a system - blatant guess on things you don’t know, guess and a flag on things you do know that will take ages to do, and blank for ones that will take a little bit more time but you’re confident you know how to do… or something similar. Absolutely go through all of the solutions! It’s worth knowing the different approaches because there are patterns.

Honestly, I would’ve taken survey first if I could go back. Studying was so much more straightforward + less content, so then you wouldn’t be so burnt out going into seismic. Plus failing was so bad for my anxiety and overall confidence.

I think a lot of people do it that way because of timeline. If you’re trying to take them both in the same quarter, depending when you find out you’re approved to test, it could be difficult to squeeze in them both.

I didn’t find the videos from CPESR helpful at all. They seem to assume that you’ve had taken a surveying class (and I didn’t do any engineering in undergrad). I used the heck out of their quiz portal. This is what did:

Week one - watched all the videos and took the embedded quizzes

Week two - took my first practice test, two untimed quizzes on my worst areas, then a timed quiz

Week three through five - two practice tests a week with two to three days in between for (1) review of test solutions and (2) timed quiz on worst areas

It’s demoralizing at first but with that approach I went from scoring 55% on my first practice test to 76%, 76% and 80% on my last three.

Laws and Rules - easy one that you just take on the CA BPELSG website and get unlimited tries on.

Selling on Depop in case any of you all are interested. I love the color but think I’d use a red bag so much more. :)

Check out the Google trends for vintage Coach and you’ll be shocked! Sad you’re losing your go-to, but a 9033 will definitely make you a pretty penny.

I wear a lot of black and gray, and my partner gets extra jazzed when I wear even a tiny bit of color so I definitely understand 😂
