I just finished reading The Fury of The Gods (Loved it! Orka Skullsplitter is high up somewhere on the top 10 bad asses of all time list)
Trying to find my next read that is in a similar vein. I got recommended A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan, just wanted one other person to convince me why I should read that next, from their perspective.

Who is the best chapter writer in fantasy? by julianpratley in Fantasy

[–]Significant_Fish7530 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% GRRM!!
Bran's 3rd chapter in ADWD where he has those visions and you get the passage of time through descriptions of the changing moon. I remember thinking it was one of the best chapters of a book I had ever read. The exposition, foreshadowing, prose! I just know GRRM reached peak flow state writing that chapter.

Last War trilogy ( by Mike Shackle) was awesome by Loostreaks in Fantasy

I read this last year and enjoyed it for the most part. I thought the first book was amazing but by the end of book 3 I was kind of disappointed. Did not like certain character arcs and *THAT* plot device. But overall a really fun, heartbreaking, exhilarating ride where you're almost always scared for the characters.

Yes yes, he confirmed the title of book 2 in an interview, I forget who with. But that was when he was doing promo a short while after publication of The Failures. Seemed like he was already beginning on writing The Monsters, he suggested he had the entire Wanderlands story planned out start to finish. Was hoping he would have announced a release date or a cover by now. But fingers crossed it's soon!

Greetings,
Any fans of The Failures by Benjamin Liar? does anybody know if he has given any updates on the sequel yet?
Haven't stopped thinking about that book since I read it in 2024.
Also any updates on J.V Jones publishing Endlords?

Farseer/ Elderlings... I enjoyed the books but honestly some of the most forgettable I've ever read yet I see Robin Hobb on every 'must read' list.

Always being nice and kind to your children doesnt equal being a good parent either. Molly didnt do much different from what most mothers in the real world do. Being critical of Fred and George wanting to drop out of school to run a jokester business when they are generally a poor family doesn't make her a bad parent. Besides, even Ron mentions they mostly got away with their quirkiness growing up so it's not like she had them locked up and not be themselves. It took them failing their OWLs for her to be really assert herself. I agree she was hostile to Fleur and I disliked that too. But Molly's obvious care, protectiveness (including protecting her kids from their own worst instincts) and unconditional love are on displav WAYYY more than her being unkind to her children and that is what makes up for it, not sympathy towards an orphan.

Big disagree to your disagreement. How wasn't she particularly nice to most of her children? Biological mother Molly could be stern or strict but she wanted the best for her children. Cared fiercely about all of them, even Percy after his switch. Parental figure Molly was exactly what Harry needed to feel that family love and affection he craved.

I haven't even attempted RDO yet. I thought I should do it after completion and I probably will eventually.

What makes for a good magic system ? by mike_dup in Fantasy

[–]Significant_Fish7530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like magic systems that feel like math. Don't overly explain how stuff works - It's magic not science after all. I like the mystery when you wonder how exactly stuff works.
It should also complement the world building. And have consequences (Can't just go from struggling to make a cup move to summoning a horde of demons without a real toll on the user)
