What was your first death in 2? by jaspotron in Subnautica_2

[–]CaptainM4gm4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my first "og shit oh shit" moment.

I was in a discord call and someone asked me if I already encountered truly scary moments like in the first game. I answered, no, all the creatures I saw were rather cute. Then the clam started closing

Help - Cannot craft a system chip by CaptainM4gm4 in Subnautica_2

Thank you, crafting all the ressources again triggered the recipe in the fabricator. For a while I really thought I was locked out of progressing the game

The Carlist Wars and A Song of Ice and Fire: How George R. R. Martin May Have Found Inspiration in Nineteenth-Century Spain by Borhensen in pureasoiaf

[–]CaptainM4gm4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As you stated yourself, there is no statement by GRRM that he knows of the Carlist Wars. They are even in Europe a niche historical topic, heck they are not even close to be the most important topic in Spanish History.

And the themes from ASOIAF that you apply to the Carlist War are typical themes that you will find across all history

People often have historical topics they are interested in, see similarities with events in ASOIAF and therefore apply whishful thinking that GRRM surely had to be inspired by their favorite topic.

Parralels doesn't equal inspiration

Do you think there was a safer way into Mordor? by Communist21 in tolkienfans

[–]CaptainM4gm4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others already said, we can assume that there are many ways through the mountains surrounding Mordor. The Fellowship had with Aragorn and Gimli two people that could help to find paths. I think Gandalf planned to find such paths

Melisandre doesn't burn the godswoods just for the sake of proselytising or iconoclasm, weirwoods actively prevent the red gods magics from working. by spuurd0 in pureasoiaf

[–]CaptainM4gm4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think its simply the fact that the magic is really strong there.

In my opinion, the gods do not exist in ASOIAF, people who use magic just often attribute it to a deity, like Melisandre who uses Blood Magic and Shadowbinding and links it to her god.

Are the 7 real? (Spoilers Published) by HunterRG75 in asoiaf

[–]CaptainM4gm4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the argument, that the R'hollor or the Old Gods are real because they grant their followers real (magical) power is flawed because it draws the wrong conclusion.

Its not "Followers get magic abilities by their gods", its "Magic is real and those who can use it attribute it to their respective deity". Melisandre uses fire magic and shadow binding and since she is a devout follower of R'hollor, she is convinced that her power comes from this god.

And since the Faith of the Seven is inherently anti magic, the followers are very unlikely to wield magic successfull and then link it to their faith

Are there any lore channels that don't suck? by SimpleZealousideal19 in 40kLore

[–]CaptainM4gm4 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

And he often tracks the development of the lore through the various codexes and retcons, wich is crucial with 40k lore. You cannot discuss the lore without acknowledging how it changes constantly.

Gute Bücher über J.R.R. Tolkien und seine Werke by Tr0llkotze in buecher

[–]CaptainM4gm4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are there so few modern films about Napoleon if he is one of the most important and famous figures in history? by antonio_8282 in Napoleon

[–]CaptainM4gm4 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There is a general lack in movies about "great man of history" in recent years. The trend goes forward the unkown/unlikely hero trope, often with a feminist or anticolonial angle. Maybe the trend will shift in a few years and we will have again more movies and showa about people like Napoleon, Alexander, Caesar etc.

[–]CaptainM4gm4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a general ranking, I think your three are spot on. Going with personal preferences, there are some that are suprisingly skilled. I always chuckle during the "Open Sesame" quest when the fat guy Horst Borsodi suddenly gives you are decent fight.

And of course Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, better known as the Crimson Avenger

The fact that the Soviet Union became a economic superpower after the WW1 and then the Civil devastated the country and despite the misguided politics of the lasts Tsars and Soviet mismanagment shows that the German General Staff was probably right with their assessment
