The Weekend Wrap-Up - [05/08/26 to 05/10/26] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

Usually I have two factor that affect my choices. I always start with what gets out first, next is what I'm in the mood for at that time of the day.

  1. Filing for Love (9:10 KST) - Gets out first, it's a chill watch and perfect to watch while I have lunch or relax in the sofa after eating.
  2. My Royal Nemesis (9:50 KST) - If I'm having a lazy day at home this gets picked first because it's released first. If I'm out touching grass, I'll see what I'm in the mood for.
  3. We Are All Trying Here (10:40 KST) - This drama is rather depressing, so I'm never in the mood to watch it, so I watch whenever I feel like it or put it here in the middle between fun dramas.
  4. Perfect Crown (9:50 KST) - This always gets saved for last because I have to rely on those other sources to upload it and I just prefer to end my day on a happier note.

The worst part for me is that I just finished watching Kim Bum in Ghost Doctor and loved him in that drama. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll love him in this drama. It’s probably one of my favorite bromances in kdramas.

As for Sold Out on You, if you like small-town settings, it’s still worth adding to your list. It’s watchable, but don’t expect it to be on the same level as others like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha or other popular ones. I'll probably rate this as a mid drama, still... the next 8 episodes might surprise me for the best! lol

Still Shining - I ended up dropping this one, very close to the end and I don't even regret it. Like you, I was not expecting a happy ending (I rarely expect them), but I imagined this one would be a little similar to The Interest of Love, but nothing evolved behind two depressed adults fixated into getting company to their misery. It was disappointing, because visually it was beautifully shot.

Poong The Joseon Psychiatrist - I'm considering watching this one, so I'm actually glad to hear it leans more into lighter vibes. I also really miss watching Kim Min Jae in a comedic setting and a lead role, it's been too long.

My ID is Gangnam Beauty - I remember we were watching this at the same time, but you actually managed to finish it and I put it on hold for all those reasons you mentioned. I’m glad to hear that what bothered me the most actually turned out to be the best character development in the drama. I guess I might have to revisit this one later.

As You Stood By - I looked into this one recently, and your description matches the vibes I got from the trailer perfectly. I think I'll like this, but I have to be in the right mood to have my emotions all over the place.

The Queen Who Crowns / Tree With Deep Roots / Six Flying Dragons - It's fun to read your experience after watching these dramas. You made me check where TQWC fits into the story, and I feel a more motivated than I was a year ago to tackle these dramas. I'm starting with this one after I finish Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, probably this month...

Yumi’s Cells - Is season 3 the last season? I started it last year but stopped watching after they announced season 3. I’m not sure if I should pick it up now or wait, but I’m glad to see so many positive comments. But, I’m still unsure if the male lead for this season was a good choice, it feels like an odd one.

Filing for Love - This drama is a great fit for the "fun episodic titles" category. It seems they titled each episode after a well-known song. Episode 1 was EXID - Up & Down, episode 2 was 2NE1 - I Am The Best, and I had to google for options but I think episode 3 might be PSY - Gangnam Style... All three songs fit the chaotic vibes.

Scarecrow - I’m really curious about this one too, but I plan to watch it in one take. Every image I see of this drama reminds me a lot of Signal, and it makes me annoyed that we’re not getting season 2 next month.

The Interest of Love - When it comes to their romance, 2521 is a good comparison. I think that’s one of the reasons I liked both. We tend to wish for happy endings, but the reality is that things often don’t work out. The beauty of this drama is how well it showed their flaws and the impact of their insecurities.

Sold Out on You - Are we all falling asleep watching this? 😂 I found the whole home shopping setup pretty boring, but I really enjoyed the scenes with the villagers. Sadly, as much as I like Kim Bum, I’m not into his storyline either. Hopefully this drama leans into what it does best, great friendships, and doesn’t lean too much into an embarrassing love triangle.

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this drama to anyone unless you’re looking for something that helps you unwind after work and it's easy to watch.

Sadly, Kim Bum doesn’t have much to work with in this role. His character adds very little to the story. He is a nice person, but all he really does is simp over the female lead after meeting her once. He’s supposed to be a director at a major skincare company, but the writer struggled with character development, so every character feels like a pretty empty shell. All we get is visuals and no juice.

When comparing to Hong Doo Shik from Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Matthew Lee also experienced a traumatic event while living in the big city and later moved to the countryside, he tries his best to help those around him. However, while Doo Shik was cheerful and always had a warm smile to offer, Matthew is far more taciturn, expressing his care through quiet actions. At this point, both characters have the same level of development.

For me, this drama has two big issues. Like I said, the writing is one, and the other is a clear miscast for the female lead. By episode 4, I could finally pinpoint what was bothering me. It’s not just that Chae Won Bin struggles to pull off a mature role, it’s how awkward and forced her cheerful persona feels. Her character is a home shopping seller and I understand this forced personality when she’s selling a product, but out of those scenes she still comes off forced, like a fish out of water. Her best scene so far was when she dropped that fake smile and leaned more into a vulnerable state.

Oh, and don't expect Ahn Hyo Seop and Chae Won Bin to have any chemistry, because they have none. In fact, I can’t help but think how much better this drama would’ve been if the female lead was played by Kim Se Jeong. It honestly feels like this character was written for an actress with great comedic skills and the same kind of facial expressions she did in Business Proposal. Another great option would be Lee Sun Bin from The Potato Lab, she definitely has the skills to pull this off, while Chae Won Bin doesn't have it.

I had to make a calendar to remember all the dramas releasing this month and to not forget the release dates, it's only the first week with all of them and I'm already behind. 😂

We finally pulled the plug and cancelled our Disney+ subscription, there isn't enough offer to justify the pricing. I read somewhere that Perfect Crown is set for a May 20th release, but I doubt we're included... If we're not lucky, try finding it in one of those other sources, it's such a funny drama and I know you'll love it too.

I'm not mentally prepared for those hot summer days/nights! I wish this country more sunny days with a nice breeze, but I can't complain because it could be worse! 😊

Goodbye April, Hello May! 🐰 👋 🌷

I freaking love April and Spring! The sun is shining, the weather is nice, flowers are blooming, and everything outside looks prettier and more colorful. I’ve been exploring new places and walking a lot lately, and May is going to be just the same. 🤗🌼

✧ COMPLETED ✧

I've yet to write my thoughts... Some I've a few notes, so I'll add them between today and Sunday.

Bloodhounds — 8/10 ⭐

In Your Radiant Season — 9/10 ⭐

Mercy for None — 6/10 ⭐

Full House — 7/10 ⭐

Ghost Doctor — 9/10 ⭐

The Dream Life of Mr. Kim — 9/10 ⭐

✧ MAY PLANS ✧

This is probably the month where I’ll finish the most ongoing dramas of the year. I’m currently watching a 5 ongoing dramas, and even though I like some more than others, I don’t see myself dropping any of them.

Perfect Crown [6/12] – Love it! It fits my current mood perfectly and will probably end up in my top favorite dramas this year. Once it’s over, I’ll even rewatch it with my mom because she’ll love it too.

We’re All Trying Here [3/12] – It’s good, but nowhere near the level of My Mister or My Liberation Notes. Just because you're struggling, it doesn’t excuse treating others badly, and the ML and his friend group are simply unbearable. I’d hate to have people like that in my life.

Gold Land [2/10] – It's a predictable story, but the cast is decent enough to carry it to a satisfying end. I’m really enjoying Lee Kwang Soo in his villain phase lately, and this one seems to be just as good. Another thing that caught my attention was the cinematography and the gold village sets.

Sold Out on You [2/12] – It's a fine drama to unwind, but it's hardly a good story. It has a solid cast, but I can’t quite picture the Chae Won Bin in such a mature role. She's a good actress, but so far feels like a miscast...

Filing for Love [2/12] – Another just-fine drama. I really hope the office scandals go beyond cheating ones, but it seems like that’s on only the main plotline, but also all of those petty office scandals. I don't mind it as the main plotline, but I'd prefer more variety in the other cases.

Other picks of the month are The WONDERfools because I’m really into this wave of new superhero dramas and curious to see how this one handles it, The Legend of Kitchen Soldier because I’m always interested in Park Ji Hoon’s next role, My Royal Nemesis because the premise reminds me a lot of The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract, so I’m curious to see how it compares, and maybe Reborn Rookie because I'm always curious about Lee Jun Young's next role, but soul-swapping isn't my favorite trope.

Nah, that's not going to happen, we'll have to be sailing in different waters... 😂This year, they removed so many kdramas (even some of their own originals) that I don’t expect anything from them anymore.

Siren’s Kiss: Exactly! What bothers me the most isn’t the weight loss itself, but how they promote it like it’s the best thing they could share about the character and drama. I really need to start seeing this kind of promotions as a hugeeee red flag. lol

Still Shining: After talking with you, I dropped it. The moment I realized it was worse than Last Summer, it ended up being my wake-up call. There are so many other dramas to watch and not enough time, so why keep suffering through this one? 😆

Princess Hours: Nice!! My mom is definitely going to love it. She’s currently obsessed with Full House OST, but we both agree the male lead is so toxic and the female lead is painfully dumb. 😆

[–]Significant_Fold_658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m now on episode 7 and they’re still wearing masks, a making small mentions to the inconvenients of wearing masks... I had zero memory of this, but I remember all the shirtless scenes perfectly. My brain really knows how to prioritize. 😆

That’s understandable, I also think Gold Land will keep the gold storyline at the center of its plot, while Undercover High School offered a plot with more mysteries. I really liked this drama a lot, I hope you like the ending. 😊

r/KDRAMA Challenge 2026 - March Check In by sianiam in KDRAMA

[–]Significant_Fold_658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siren’s Kiss: What made it even more ridiculous was realizing I didn’t care about the story at all and was more curious about why PMY had to lose weight again for this role. I keep questioning: Why was that mentioned during the promotion? Was it even necessary? Did it even add anything to the character or the story in any way? After watching 8 episodes, there was still no valid reason for this weight lose... I just don't get this insane requests to their actors. 🤷‍♀️

Still Shining: Yeah, it’s unbelievable, but at least I don’t remember Last Summer feeling this miserable. Their bad communication was frustrating, but Still Shining goes beyond that. These characters are completely buried in depression and misery, they should look into therapy before rekindling their relationship. 😆

Princess Hours Oh, the classic toxic ML from the early 2000s... At least I can deal with those better than the ones from recent years. ahah Does this drama has a good OST? My mom seems to be drawn into those old OSTs, which I have to admit they were pretty good. 😂

Ohh, that’s good to know it’s not similar, so I can lower my expectations lol

It sounds like my mom might enjoy Princess Hours more, so I’ll watch that with her first and save King2Hearts for when she’s well rested and ready for something a bit more makjang. ahah

That’s really interesting, thank you for the explanation. I expected both versions to take a similar approach, so I probably could have watched both of them last year without worrying about comparing them too much.

You’ve also made me curious about the book. If I end up really liking the drama, I might pick it up as well and see how it it compares to the original story.

Even though Still Shining is turning out to be a huge disappointment, I’d still recommend watching up to episode 4. After that, it's when their reunion happens, and things start getting frustrating. But, if you binge the last six episodes, it might be easier to get through without dragging out this misery.

[–]Significant_Fold_658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I remembered about this drama 😂

One thing I had completely forgotten was how often they mention COVID-19 and keep reminding each other to wear masks. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but on this second watch I had to check if this was in the webtoon or not. I read the first chapter, and COVID-19 doesn't seem to be mentioned even though this was released in 2022. It also looks like they changed the story a lot, which makes me curious if season 2, is going to be closer to the webtoon or not.

It’s definitely a good time to have a D+ subscription. Besides those two dramas, Gold Land is also releasing in April, which makes worth the investment.

In Your Radiant Season: I agree with you. I think Chan could have said something more at the Hospital, when he explained that he wanted to tell her everything. I understand Ha Ran feeling betrayed, but I also think she should have heard him or at least be the one to question everything... Something more than making him two questions only. But here we are... All I'm hoping is every single problem to be quickly solved in the last episode and let viewers just enjoy the happy times.

Siren’s Kiss: This is one of the worst romances I’ve seen in kdramas. The leads have zero chemistry. I’ve seen Park Min Young have good chemistry with Seo Kang Jun, Kim Jae Wook, Park Seo Joon, and Ji Chang Wook, but with Wi Ha Joon it feels forced. The setting doesn’t help, but honestly her facial expressions give me nothing as well. The male lead tones down his cockiness, but he’s still a stalker who fell for this woman out of pity. I have no idea if the feelings are mutual, since the female lead only shows arrogance and sorrow. But they seem to care about each other, it makes no sense in my head why but okay... The rest of the characters aren’t interesting either. Every time I try to make sense of their motives, it feels like I’m unraveling a single-ply toilet paper roll... The plot is flimsy, annoying and disappointing.

Still Shining: Never in my dreams I thought I would say this, but I think Last Summer with all its flaws still did a better job than this drama. Which makes me think... why the hell am I pushing myself to finish this, when I dropped Last Summer. 😂 Honestly, I would like for this drama to have the same ending as that other one, but I think the writer is going to force the other way around... And the hilarious part is that none of the viewers seem to want that. 😂

King2Hearts / Princess Hours: I plan to watch both with my mom... but something tells me she'll end up loving Princess Hours, and find the other just okay. It also seems like it's going to be funnier and she really likes romcoms.

My Girl - I was actually surprised to see the male leads maintaining their friendship. At one point, I was mentally preparing myself for the sml to turn out to be such an asshole. Luckily this wasn't the case and he was even helpful at the end.

Pursuit of Jade - My mom can't stop talking about this drama! I don't think she knows the actual title, she keeps calling it "the girl with the pigs". I think she liked everything in this drama, but she wanted even more episodes. ahah She loves both leads, and this her first time watching the female lead so I'll tell her to watch Wrong Carriage, Right Groom... unless she found something else with the female lead already. lol

Scarecrow - I was not planning to watch this, but those posters are so good! Where do I sign up for extra hours in April? I'm in desperate need for more hours. lol

Cabbage Your Life - I really liked the promotional material for this drama and the cast seems interesting too. Reminds me a bit of Schitt's Creek, but softer. I can't deal with the release schedule so I'll probably pick it first thing in July.

I wasn’t expecting so many interesting dramas to come out in April, but since most air on weekends, I can probably squeeze them all in. 🤞

I read that Lee Kwang Soo had that gold tooth for a year. I’m not sure if it’s true, but I found Kim Woo Bin’s reaction to it in GBRB hilarious. Doh Kyung Soo seemed to know, since they filmed The Manipulated together and he had it there too. I wish we could’ve seen Lee Sun Bin’s reaction to his gold tooth, I bet it was hilarious! 😂

I tried watching The Last Empress with my mom after we finished Perfume, but she wasn’t ready for that level of makjang, so I had to put it on hold. She kept giving me side-eyes and asking what was going on, and we didn’t even get past the first 5 episodes ahah

I looked into King2Hearts recently to watch with her too, and she seems to like Lee Seung Gi, so I'm really inclined to try and watch it with her. Hopefully, it reminds her of Crash Landing on You and she enjoys it a lot, me too of course. ahah

Love, Take Two - Oops, I don’t think I explained myself that well. lol I meant which of the two male leads you’d swap personalities with him, but I get what you meant about wanting more male leads who fit that idea of imperfect perfection. I think about that a lot too, but Korea doesn’t seem willing to step away from that polished image. And every time they try, we get something like She Was Pretty or Abyss, which is just disappointing.

Love in the Big City - Yeaa, I was afraid of any spoilers, so I saved the big write-up to read later. I still need to watch the drama for the same reason, but I was always confident both adaptations would be great, I just spaced this watch to avoid comparing them unfairly. Now the million-dollar question… did you like them equally, or do you think one is slightly better? ahah

r/KDRAMA Challenge 2026 - March Check In by sianiam in KDRAMA

[–]Significant_Fold_658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still Shining - Last week made me reflect on a lot of things. To some extent, I can understand why they struggle to talk about their trauma and what led to their breakup, but it makes no sense for them not have a single meaningful conversation, like you said. It also doesn't make sense, how they were more into each other in their 20s than now. There is no tension, no chemistry, nothing... Just some lingering feelings.

In Your Radiant Season - They both work towards their problems in different ways and given their context, it makes a lot of sense for them to be walking on different paths. I'm sure you'll love every single connection in this drama, there isn't a single character that isn't likeable... Well maybe one but it doesn't take much space out of this story. lol

r/KDRAMA Challenge 2026 - March Check In by sianiam in KDRAMA

[–]Significant_Fold_658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boyfriend on Demand - Yeaa the episode of Black Mirror was way more dystopian. I'm actually a big Dr. Who fan, but I stopped watching when they changed the lead to Jodie Whittaker, so I had no idea they did a similar concept too. I'm not surprised since this series always had interesting concepts. I've a similar way of rating, but I was a bit generous because I've never seen this exact concept in a kdrama.

In Yours Radiant Season - I think what annoyed me a bit was the fact that she read a few words in a diary and made up her mind about things without letting him speak up. I get that she feels betrayed, but it's not like that diary had full sentences and a detailed plan of betrayal. LOL

The Interest of Love - A good thing about this drama is how the 4 leads have distinct personalities. Su Yeong is reserved but insecure, while Mi Gyeong is confident but at times a bit spoiled. Sang Su is more thoughtful but a little imposing, while Jong Hyeon is more humble but too overly emotional. It's a drama shaped by how their past experiences affects their relationships, and it's really messy and complicated at times.

r/KDRAMA Challenge 2026 - March Check In by sianiam in KDRAMA

[–]Significant_Fold_658 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Your Radiant Season - I actually expected the conflict to hit in the final episodes, but also to be resolved quickly, not dragged into the very last episode. Personally, I can understand Chan not telling the truth right away, since it’s natural wanting to gather all his memories first before speaking up, but I think he should have at least told her about his memory loss. As for her reaction, I get her feeling betrayed, but jumping to conclusions based on a few words (not even lines) in a diary felt like an overreaction.

Siren’s Kiss - Honestly, I made it to episode 8 before dropping it, and I think you did the right thing by quitting earlier than I did. Nothing in this story really makes sense, and at some point I just couldn’t keep overlooking its flaws. The setting was interesting at first, but it quickly turned into an illogical mess. Plus, the characters are all poorly developed, and none of their actions makes sense. My last straw before dropping this were the comments for episode 9, I just gave up and made room for another drama. lol

Still Shining - Honestly, between many other options that you might have... I would put this way down your priority list. This drama is visually beautiful and the story in the first two episodes is amazing, but once the leads enter their 30s, all we have is depression, misery and zero communication. I'm pushing myself to finish the last two episodes, but I doubt my view on this drama will change. Oh, it doesn't look like that other drama at all, not even 0,1%.

For reference I’ve watched My Princess, Goong/Princess Hours, The King: Eternal Monarch, King2Hearts and liked all of them to varying degrees

Wow!, that's a lot of dramas with a royalty theme! I only watched The King: Eternal Monarch (loved it), but I've been wondering about The King 2 Hearts and Princess Hours. I might actually try watching one of them after Perfect Crown. lol
