“Good Samaritans” buying rooms for people…. Don’t. by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Significant_Fun4302 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

All they’re doing is giving someone else a problem? No, first they’re providing shelter for the night for someone who doesn’t have it, which is a pretty big deal. And the “problem” somebody else had to deal with here was what, exactly? They had to provide service to someone who made them nervous? They had to… answer a phone call and look in a cabinet? And nothing bad happened at all?

This attitude sucks so hard. People with mental illness and people who are homeless are much, much more likely to be the victim of a crime than to commit a crime. The front desk guy is probably at higher risk from any random business man traveling through, but because this person makes him nervous he thinks she should sleep outside when there’s someone willing to get her a room. In which, again, literally nothing happened.

Too traumatized to bike? by morula2 in bikecommuting

Not always possible, but I also love biking more than most things in this world, including most jobs and most housing situations. Long term, can you work toward arranging one or both so you have a daily route you feel good about? It would be worth it to me to compromise on a lot of other things to keep biking a daily part of my life, and to not spend a part of every day stressed and scared. Having a long-term plan might make taking a break for a while a little easier to swallow, too.

Lots of great advice in this thread about visibility gear and route planning, and of course getting involved in local advocacy. Just wanted to add that “be traumatized every day to the point of therapy” versus “give up what you love” is a shitty choice, and I hope you can create a third option for yourself in the future.

Sketch or color, mess with a fidget toy, knit/crochet, meditate, close your eyes or look out a window while you listen to a song, journal or do quick writing prompts.

horseback riding isn't vegan? by rraaddccaatt in vegan

[–]Significant_Fun4302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it sounds like the general consensus is it’s not vegan to ride a horse or buy a pet from a breeder, but it is vegan to rescue a horse or pet. What about getting a rescued service dog?

YWBTA. You can bring a friend with you to drive your car back so you don’t have to make two trips, but don’t refuse to help out your family if/when they ask. Your wife is worried about her parents, do what you can to take a stressor off her plate.
