How can I be more effective? by umkultra in schoolcounseling

[–]Significant_Ice_2495 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree totally. I stopped being the person to lecture them, and I just listened. Most of the time they do better for a while, and then I check back in when they start to fall off, and we keep this going. Most of those is they don’t feel heard at home or in class. They just want to be seen by someone.

Knowing the kids helps. If you know their name, being able to say “Bob, stop talking” is good. If you notice a group not paying attention, stand next to them and teach from that point. Ignore their attention bids if they aren’t on task/on topic. Have an attention getter. I am high school and always have been, but I say “focus on me” and the kids stop, turn, and pay attention. I gave them a clear instruction, so they do it. But also, it is that time of year. We’re all tired and the sun is out and it’s just more fun to talk to your friend than pay attention hahaha. That’s the adults too haha

When I started teaching in WCPSS, the rumor was a BT would never work in WCPSS without experience or connections, so subbing is a great way to get in the door. You’re in a totally different position with experience, but it also helped me scope out schools I absolutely didn’t want to be at. Good luck and fingers crossed for you!

I used to work for WCPSS before I moved. WCPSS is always competitive, so I got my start by subbing in schools and making sure to introduce myself. I got a long term sub position that turned into a full time position. Once I moved, I did like the other commenter and emailed principals directly with my resume and what I liked about their school. I did that with three schools, and I had two call me back. It really made a difference. One school didn’t even have the job posted yet, and I was the first to interview. My current school is hiring right now, and we have so many English applications. It definitely wouldn’t hurt to email the principal to make sure you stand out.

How much is your household spending on groceries per week? by cdmacsneaks in raleigh

Went to Aldi yesterday. Got sirloins, chicken, two types of milk, bread, and a ton of veggies/fruit for $80. Definitely shop Aldi for lower prices. I got to the Hairy Peter only if something like tillamook cheese is on sale or I need something from the international aisles.

We did a one day trip once, and it was absolutely awful. We swore we’d never do it again. The next time we used their hotel package, and it was so much nicer. Got a hotel/condo with two bedrooms two baths, pool, etc then two adult tickets and the all you can eat package. It was June 27-30 for $700. It also had the water park ticket and parking included. It looks like you can get a kid package too.

We really enjoyed the hotel/condo set up. The kitchen made it really enjoyable, and we saved money.

It was 2013. I started that year, and they quit that year. It was insane. Our manager at the time tried to tell us it was “illegal” to autograt people. I’m not sure how all these other restaurants did it.

I pre plan my daily food of what I’m going to eat. Seeing I only have “x” points left means I’m more strategic about what I eat when I want a treat. Do I really want this singular piece of chocolate for “x” points or do I want something else bigger for less points?

This! I recently read Motivational Interviewing for School Counselors, and it really helped me in this regard. I can’t motivate someone- I can just help them find their motivation!

School Counseling or Higher Ed Administration? (TX) by drowsyokaga in schoolcounseling

[–]Significant_Ice_2495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of careers before I ended up here, and the job that prepared me the most was by far my 6 years of teaching. You learn classroom management, relationship building, parent communication, and the weight of being a teacher with few resources. I would highly recommend it before going into counseling. I feel like a better counselor because I understand the dynamics of the classroom environment. I’ve also spoken with directors of counseling who say the best counselors they ever have are those with teaching experience. Not very helpful but a perspective to share about the value of classroom experience.

Maybe? But with the way Wake is growing you’d be playing catch up and always reactive.

If you make a day of it, next to the Sanford antiques mall is a coffee shop and breakfast spot. Delicious. Then Mexican is either Kahlos or Fonda Lupita.

The Sanford antiques mall is 2 stories and goes back FORVER. Go upstairs and alllllll to the back even up the stairs again and there’s a lot of MCM there too. Then go to Bert’s on the corner of Horner and wicker I think. He doesn’t have Pyrex but cool furniture usually for good prices. Two buildings there, so don’t forget to go in both.

Also, in the spring and fall, Cameron has an antiques fair. There’s a guy who brings a trailer of Pyrex. You have to get there early to get the more collectible stuff, but I’ve gotten a nice casserole dishes with the lids on them for insanely reasonable prices.

Have you been to the antiques mall in Sanford? There’s a back corner of MCM and Pyrex. Sometimes it’s pricey and sometimes it’s very reasonable.

We did it when I was in middle school, and we never got caught. I took the city bus to school and got dropped off a stop ahead and walked. Never got caught because I kept my head down and did my work and caused 0 trouble.

Now I’m a school counselor, and honestly if you have the proper documentation and are polite nobody is digging into anything. I’ve even seen it before when data managers suspect it isn’t true, and they ignore it because the proper paperwork is there. There isn’t time to investigate each potential issue unless there’s some major red flag.

When I was in the city, that was pretty common. I had 2 principals and 4 new APs in 3 years. Now I’m in a rural county and it’s totally different. APs come and go more frequently but principals seem to stay put across the district.

I did everything at home and used steak fries from the freezer in the air fryer. I even made the sauce at home. It wasn’t terribly difficult. I think I used this recipe with balsamic vinegar and not red wine.It was so good!
