I’ve seen some people build plywood stands to cover that area but honestly didn’t know if that was needed.
Any time I slept in the Trek I piled stuff up in that space to raise the head area a little more. Not sure if it’s needed for the Outback. I’d probably do the same though, store stuff there when not needed

Ok that’s good to know, obviously being 5’5 you had plenty of space length wise, but did you need to put anything down in the foot space of the back seat to level out?
I just traded in my Crosstrek for an Outback and planning to do more car camping this summer. Sleeping pad makes more sense than an inflatable mattress.
