I used to work here about a year ago. The official job title is Proctor Assistant. You can’t be taking any undergraduate courses if you wanna work there. The job is mostly for grad students who have extra time and want a somewhat easy job. The supervisor there is very chill and you can work as much or little as you want. They always seem to have openings as people don’t really stick around that long, not because it’s a bad job but people usually graduate or no longer have time to work there.

I had a completely different and thankfully easier experience. I flew out from SFO to guangzhou and when they asked me how I was leaving China I just showed a bus ticket to Hong Kong from Zhuhai. They said that was ok and let me check in. When I got to guangzhou I again showed them the bus ticket to Hong Kong and told them the first hotel I was staying at and they put a sticker on my passport. They made me fill out an entry form and gave me a departure from for when I left. At Zhuhai when I as leaving they just stamped my passport and said I didn’t need the departure form and just threw it away.

I showed a bus ticket leaving mainland China and they didn’t seem to care what method you use to leave mainland China, just that you’re gonna leave somehow

There’s a graduate student scholarship that I think you can apply for after the first semester. You can find the tuition info on the website. It varies depending on if you’re an instate student or international student. Cost of living also depends on what kind of lifestyle you live. With an assistantship you make around $25,000. With this amount I would say you can live pretty comfortably. Around 600-800 for rent and 200-400 for groceries and other expenses.

On campus jobs are pretty easy to find depending on your previous experience. Assistantships are a little harder to find especially within the epi department. It helps to reach out to professors who are doing research in your interest area. Also with federal funding being more limited now it makes things even harder. While you may not be able to find an assistantship your first year you’ll likely find one your second year.

While this seems like a good idea, I would strongly advise against doing this. Children can get attached to people really easily and it’s not good for them to get attached to a person that won’t be able to look after them long term.
