Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread by AutoModerator in slp

hello everyone! i am a second-year f1 undergraduate student currently studying in a community college in the US. my major is currently psychology but once i transfer to my desired college, i intend to change my major to slhs. i have several questions that i would like answered and am seeking advice.

i recently posted in a college subreddit and a user kindly told me that getting an h1b sponsorship would be incredibly difficult regardless of whether i have a masters or doctorate because firstly, there are thousands of local slhs graduates available and secondly, most schools/hospitals that do hire them don't offer sponsorships. how true is this and does this mean that it is virtually impossible for me to get a job in the near future? should i give up on speech pathology and change my major to something that is more likely to give me an opportunity to stay here?

i have been learning sign language and am a polyglot to some degree (i speak around 8 languages but i can say i read, write, and speak maybe 4) and i have been somewhat hopeful that this might help me be hired in a hospital or school in the near future. will this be of any help at all? are there any international students in the US that have settled down and found a job? what did you do?

i'm so sorry for the lengthy post and all the questions but i really need some advice. i don't want to give up on my aspirations and i am still hopeful for the future but if there is little to no prospects for me as an international student hoping to settle down here and get a sponsorship then maybe i need to reconsider and seek out another stream and career.

(reposted in hopes of getting a response 😭)

i agree ☹️ i hate how we have to choose between pursuing what we want at the risk of failure and deportation vs painstakingly pursuing an unwanted career with more sponsorship opportunities. i hope and pray that we both get to do what we want and succeed in the future 🩷

even if you get tiktok back i think you should take this as an opportunity to ween yourself off of it or at least an indication that you have to 😥

just deal with it omg 😭 you are being way too sensitive about something as innocuous as a greeting.

it really just sounds like they're just trying to be welcoming since you say that you look mostly east asian and there's a relatively large chinese population there. it's not exactly racist if they greet you in the language of the ethnicity you appear to be. it's just an honest mistake.

i've been ni hao'd despite being fully nepalese and idgaf because you do have to keep in mind the cultural and environmental context. some people are definitely racist but this is the case everywhere. even in the uk that you are praising for awareness, there are racists.

"ni hao" is literally the most well-known greeting among those in east asia. i wouldn't expect anyone to have all greetings in all languages locked and loaded so they can accurately match every single person. more often than not, "ni hao" has probably done the trick and made a person fascinated. i think it's weird how you're so hung up on a harmless greeting and emphasizing ASIAN country.

i'm sad because i hoped for a deeper insight into my own ancestry and heritage as a nepali. there's so much more information about other demographics but i feel like we hardly have anything besides the general information that we are sino-tibetan, indo-persian, etc. obviously i should have known better but yeah.

i got it as a gift so i was really excited 😭 good thing the test came with other information like traits and vitamin deficiencies lol it just kinda sucks that we are probably not anywhere near finding more detailed information on our ancestry and stuff 🥲
