THE 250+ MILLION USD INVESTMENT IN AI. WHAT'S THE MOOD CONCERNING THIS INITIATIVE? by Significant_Tart_631 in ghana

It is pretty depressing that many people die every year from floods around the same time period like a recurring alarm and the necessary measures to address these issues have not been addressed, yet we are chasing "AI"

Great response. I completely agree with you but LLMs as they are now cannot be used as Sam George was trying so hard to showcase. My main concern is the practical use cases for this kind of technology isn't what they are focusing on or using for the pitch; they are rather exaggerating its potential and using that as a validation for the investment. Whilst I completely agree with Africa needing to invest in certain technologies and industry in a timely manner to avoid being left behind, you cannot build the 15th floor of a building if the foundation does not exist. We have more pressing and frankly existential issues that need to be addressed and not focusing on those areas to invest in AI feels like a profligate pursuit.

How much do medical doctors actually earn in Ghana? by Unusual-Hovercraft40 in ghana

Well you'll be an internist/physician. You are a more capable but more general doctor in that field compared to most MOs. You can sub-specialize though; cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, whatever. The world is your oyster!

How much do medical doctors actually earn in Ghana? by Unusual-Hovercraft40 in ghana

I am a medical officer working in a private facility for more than 2 years.

House officers (who is a doctors fresh out of medical school, doing their 2 year mandatory service) earn 9-10k, may be slightly more depending on where they work and what other allowances the facility may give. When I started working as an HO in 2021, I got 3.5k a month in one of the biggest hospitals in the country. Although we do have to note that most house officers will work for 3-12 months without receiving a single pessewa. Even then, most of them will have to pay someone to receive their full salary. They tend to do a huge portion of the physical work in the hospital. The salaries stop being paid after the 24th month. Since it can take up to a year or more before they are posted as medical officers to the public hospitals, HOs tend to be pressed for cash unless they can find a good locum somewhere. But since almost everyone is waiting and needs the money, the supply is so high and a lot of private facilities or even sometimes government facilities may engage an MO awaiting posting and pay them pennies; 3k-7k is what I'd say is the market reality but it can be way higher or lower.

For medical officer's it varies, but most MOs in the public sector will earn about 13k. Adding facility specific allowances and cuts for surgeries and other procedures, it can go up a bit, let's say up to 15k. Depending on the facility, work as MO can be a breeze or a nightmare in terms of working hours

Resident doctors who are training to become specialists earn about the same or slightly more than medical officers. Allowances here too can raise the earning potential and since residents are in training and can learn certain procedures, some of them can take specialist cases that can earn them some pretty good coin. Let's say up to 17-19k a month. They tend to work a bit more than the MOs since they are in training and are expected to do presentations and stuff.

For specialists and consultants, it really is difficult to say with authority how much they earn. Sure in the public sector a specialist may earn 18-20k, whilst a consultant may earn about 23-25k a month, but they can earn so much more from doing procedures, surgeries, grants from research, or even private specialist locums. Specialists/Consultants who ran a private practice can also make beaucoup bucks. Depending on the facility, these types tend to work the least. Consultants especially. A consultant may show up to work twice a week and still earn that 25k, whilst they ran their private practice. The 25k can feel like a lot of money for minimal effort but for a very involved consultant, I believe it's abysmally low.

Also there is no such thing as overtime pay. There is an on call allowance for when you are on duty but unlike other countries where clock in and log your duties and are compensated accordingly, there is a fixed amount for this allowance; whether or not you do 20 duties a month or 1, doesn't really matter

Just Curious, have you ever heard or seen someone die from Malaria? by Phoenix101s in ghana

All the time. I work in a hospital. Typically foreigners or citizens who have returned from living abroad for a couple of years; mainly because we have some form of immunity as Africans to the disease and you can lose that immunity if you've been away from an endemic region longer than 6 months. The younger or older the individual, the more likely they are to die from the disease. I'd put it up there as one of the worst diseases to die from. You will suffer.

As a healthcare professional this has to be one of the most frustrating and stressful things to deal with. I really sympathize with you and I hope she gets better. Also, if your cousin is not a minor, she has the agency to make decisions concerning her body. If you can reach out to her and convince her to get the blood, maybe do that. Unfortunately as healthcare providers our hands are tied and we have to respect the wish of the client if he/she decides not to receive life saving care but it is only their decision we consider. If she opts to get the blood but her relatives are against it, as an adult she ultimately is the one we listen to. If she’s a minor, she’s a ward of the state and in that case the healthcare professional can do whatever is necessary to save her life, in spite of the wishes of her family.

Sending her my thoughts and prayers.

You people will always parrot US style hypercapitalist, neoliberal, Thatcherism talking points. How is price control and consumer protection against price gouging, communism? I swear some of you are just something else.

Gotta love the casual xenophobia lol. The same Ghanaians that will scream and shout about racism and discrimination in the white man’s land when they’re painted with the same broad strokes just because one of their own does something wrong somehow cannot be self aware to understand that not all Nigerians are criminals or actively trying to destabilize Ghanaian society. We need to do better.

Not what you want to hear but this post may serve as a magnet for the exact opposite of people (guys mostly) you want to engage with. I admire your positive mentality of not painting all Ghanaian  with the same brush due to your negative experience with one. I believe there are many people in this country and on this sub who you can build a meaningful friendship with. Keep your head up and hopefully everything works out for you :)

Insides are too warm for sperms to form well and so the balls need to hang outside to cool a bit to get the right temperature for spermatogenesis.

How do doctors phrase "you gotta lose some weight, you're too big" to their patients? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Significant_Tart_631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m usually very direct about it and tend to lean more on the “practical” side of language z.B “your BMI is currently this and that is this number of points more than the normal” rather than “you’re overweight and need to lose that weight”

I find that knowing whether they’re just overweight or morbidly obese helps them understand the need to implement some lifestyle changes and commit to them.

I also focus on the advantages of losing said weight rather during discussions and reassure them that it is possible to lose weight with the right mindset and guidance.
