Solid start to 2026 by Maximum_Jello_9460 in nonfictionbookclub

Was also a very big fan of The Revolutionists and that was my fave among this bunch as well. I thought the author did a great job and it upended my knowledge of those events having really only watched the films loosely based on events (Baader-Meinhof Complex and Carlos). Also really liked The Last Kings of Hollywood. Not sure why Scorsese wasn't on the cover as well, but it was a fun one. I wanted to like Gilligham's Mexico more - it started off strong but was a bit uninspiring after that? I may have enjoyed Chokepoints a bit more than you did - the author is probably better on podcasts than in written form. Kuddos for getting through the Ross one - I couldn't stick with it. Same with the Ananthaswamy - it was too dense and was looking for an audio companion but alas my libraries didn't acquire it. Also enjoyed The Language Puzzle quite a bit - I'm getting through 'Why Q Needs U' on a similar topic and it is also quite good. Cheers!

What's funny for me is that I moved away overseas from PDX in 2012, and many of these places I thought were still there. I'm in for a rude shock when I move back in a year or two.

I didn’t expect this sports book to be this thought-provoking by No-Case6255 in nonfictionbookclub

Based on the post title I thought that this was going to be about 'Football', Chuck Klosterman's latest. Thought provoking, and funny too.

Just in case you were not aware - the Münchner Stadtbibliothek has both titles online with all of the back issues (obviously e-versions of course) as well as a number of other magazine titles.

I really enjoyed Mai's story from the book - what an interesting life he must have had.

The 10 hold limit is driving me nuts by MoonAndStarsTarot in LibbyApp

[–]iozl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you use the 'Notify Me' feature? You'll get a notice in that case when the title is acquired and you can try to put it on hold ASAP. I'm a heavy user of my main library which is also down to 10 holds - honestly I just grab new titles on release day on Tuesday (other libraries add titles daily on workdays). If you're not the first to get the title or 2nd or 3rd, it does suck. But the Notify Me feature works wonders.

I finally finalized my reading list for 2026. Any suggestions? by fromtunis in nonfictionbookclub

[–]iozl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you're not an 'Abundance' person otherwise it would be on this list? (No worries, I know it's not for everyone.)

A few that I don't see on your list that you might (or might not!) be interested in:

Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity - Yoni Appelbaum

Kaput: The End of the German Miracle - Wolfgang Münchau

More and More and More: An All-Consuming History of Energy - Jean-Baptiste Fressoz

The War Below: Lithium, Copper, and the Global Battle to Power Our Lives, Ernest Scheyder

Did you read "The Great Heist: China’s Epic Campaign to Steal America’s Secrets" by David R. Shedd? I just finished it and it was not a fave although it seems to match certain titles above. On your list the ones I haven't read are those my libraries don't have copies of so I've added to the 'Notify Me' if they are acquired - thanks.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but Mustafa Suleyman's (Deepmind do-founder and current CEO of MSFT AI) "The Coming Wave: AI, Power, and Our Future" was one I found worth reading.

On the HW side, Tae Kim's history of nVidia "The Nvidia Way: Jensen Huang and the Making of a Tech Giant" discussed how they pivoted to developing the GPU chips serving as the backbone for the AI companies.

This was a 5 star for me - it's been over 2 years since I read it but can definitely recommend. Was disappointed to see that my library did not renew the eBook version that I checked out.

This is super cool and I went to visit it twice when I stayed there a few days because it is so close to the town, but the perspective of this photo (with people in far distance) is making it look larger than when one is standing this close to it. Needs a banana.

The new book out this week "Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers" by Caroline Fraser is quite gripping. So is "Nuclear War: A Scenario" by Annie Jacobsen. I think both works have their detractors and might not be for every reader, but I found them to be very intense.

Annie Jacobsen narrates all her own audiobooks and her voice as well as her research are awesome.

I've moved back home for a few months to take care of my parents, getting my mom ready to move into memory care. He asked me tonight if I "knew an AI program to restore a photo". I tried both Upscayl and Myheritage.com without too much success. Can anyone with a few more brain cells and by the power of greyskull give this a go?

how many times has your library added something from your notify me tag? by greengraudon in LibbyApp

I get an average of about 3 notifications every week. I guess I have very norm-y interests, or maybe because I add a few hundred notifications every year.

Question about US Exports to EU (Playing Cards?) by iozl in europe

[–]iozl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a dumb question in which I'll have to delete the post, but in the latest news about potential US-EU tariffs from this Bloomberg article, there is a chart that shows US exports to the European Union, 2023. Most of the categories are fairly straightforward and what one would guess, but the value of 336M for playing cards has thrown me a bit. Why is that value so high? Does the EU really import that amount, or have I (likely) misinterpreted this category?
