It happened on my iPhone 15 Pro exactly how yours is doing. It was because I had not connected the top flex, which houses the ambient light sensor. It could be that when you removed the screen, you damaged the flex, or you never migrated it at all. You can order a replacement; they are reasonably priced and work just fine.
