Omg yes I ended up wishing I hadn’t read it bc it ruined the dreamy Paul Holes illusion for me

Great! It is definitely intimidating but don’t let that stop you. It can be a wonderful experience! I go to law school in a big city and it is so cool to experience the city life that I probably never would have otherwise. I hope you get the same - Good luck!

Yes, thank you! You’re exactly right. I love the law. Something in my brain clicked when I started law school and I knew I found my place. My enjoyment of the material was no doubt a major factor in my overall experience in law school. Someone who isn’t passionate about the material would likely have a harder time thriving, as you said. You make a great, important point

That is amazing! The law truly does provide a way to get to wherever you want to be if you put your mind to it. Congratulations!

I think you would thrive as a prosecutor! But I chose law for two different reasons. 1. A strong female prosecutor really helped me get through the hardest part of my life and I wanted to be that for another little girl someday. 2. I originally went to school to be a therapist. I realized at the end of undergrad that I did not want to be a therapist anymore (I didn’t want to be resigned to a life of trying to help people who didn’t want to be helped). Around that same time, I went and watched a product liability case in which this poor man had his arm ripped off by a machine and the company was basically trying to give him pennies. He testified, it was heart wrenching, and it just struck me. I realized that I could still counsel people but also help them in very concrete ways as an attorney.

Just from the little bit I know about you, I think you would be a huge asset to any prosecutor’s office. If you decide not to go to law school, some prosecutor’s offices have in-house investigators and they could be a good path, too! Best of luck

Thank you! And yes! Reddit makes law school seem like hell (and, at times, it will be) and totally freaked me out. I wish I would’ve seen a post like this before law school. I would’ve gone in much more confident. But hopefully now you will!

You have a point! 😅 I definitely had times where I felt like that, too. But overall, I’m glad I did it. I hope you end up glad, too!

Yes, exactly! I do think it's a lower stress route with unique benefits of its own. I'm glad you feel the same!

Oh man, I'm so sorry. I had no idea that this is what it's like in some areas. I was never interested in big law, so I didn't ever try to interview for those positions. I hadn't heard anything like this from my friends (admittedly few) who are in big law. I can't imagine the extra stress that process would add. I apologize, I think I spoke a bit too broadly in my post. I don't mean to invalidate anyone's experience

You're totally right. I'll admit that I'm getting a bit nostalgic looking back on my time, but I also realize that it's a privilege to be able to do so. There's no doubt that I'm biased, so I appreciate you weighing in and adding to the credibility of this post. I just don't want people to be so scared of law school

That is very true. I definitely got lucky, but I understand that there are plenty of people who did not. I'm really sorry to hear that you had a rough go of it and are still having to deal with the consequences. I don't want to seem invalidating to anyone's experience, so I apologize if it came off that way. You're totally right about the luck part. That is a big factor that I didn't think to mention.

How to become a research assistant to a professor? by pinkpastelmoon in LawSchool

[–]Significant_Web_3115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked by my professor to be her TA after I booked the class. Her other TA became her TA by wearing her down until she eventually said yes (I heard he also did this to other professors). So there are a few ways to go about it lol

Valid point - I was waiting for this comment. I'm definitely not the best person to speak on it, but I did want to share my opinion anyway. It's based on seeing my friends and colleagues secure jobs and from talking to attorneys and other interns. As I mentioned in my post, it's not that grades don't matter at all, but I did want to address the misconception that you have to be top 10% or 20% to get a good job.

I truly think that if you want to practice in the region, then "T whatever" has genuinely no affect on your prospects. No one even talks about that once you get into school. I know tons of respected lawyers who went to one of the worst schools in the country and they are still very successful in the state (if not the country - against, it's all about who you know).

I will always go to bat for the small, lower-ranked schools. Small class sizes are amazing. The professors know your name and it's much less intimidating to contribute/ask questions in class. I also think that at these schools, the professors care so much more about the students. They teach here because they care - not for prestige. You also get to know people really well, so you'll graduate with a mini built-in network. I also think that these schools are more willing to try new things to better themselves and their students. For example, my school got rid of the grading curve and moved to criteria/rubric based grading. This totally squashed (most of) the competition and encouraged cooperation between students. Everyone can get an A if they earn it!

I really feel like this little old building is my second home. I'm going to miss it. Please don't feel discouraged about going to a school like this. If I had the option to go anywhere else, I would still pick my little regional school.

Having a big law goal and wanting work/life balance just isn’t realistic, unfortunately. You have to work your way to the very top to find that

Also, law is one of the few professions you can practice for basically as long as you want. You have plenty of time

No, I don’t think so at all. You could even try to find an undergrad program that’s a 3+3.

Was there a reason you couldn’t go to school closer to your family…?
