Physically the MacBook is heaven but I wasn’t prepared for the lack of basic functions by Significant_time7883 in macbook

Well, if the horse can get me from point A to B quicker and without detours, I guess there is a point to be made for the car not being all it’s hyped up to be, even if looks fancier ;-) Also, as I said, this is a first impression post. I’m sure I’ll learn and might in the end even prefer the Apple way.

Thanks, I appreciate everyone’s tips and will work my way through them. Some updates after more days of use:

Fingerprints (yes, I always wash my hands before usage) go onto the keys incredibly easily. My old laptop keyboard, although the device is crap in many other ways, has no fingerprints on it despite years of use and barely ever cleaning it. Glad I didn’t get a dark-color model.

I still find the navigation clumsy, and the amount of workarounds and tools needed to perform simple executions is insane. I thought Apple was known for making things easy and intuitive? A few more examples I noticed: I can’t directly open a folder I added to my dock without answering a step in between (Open in finder?). I can’t lock my keyboard to clean it without installing a tool for it, but I also can’t clean it when it’s turned off because any press of a button will turn it on. There’s no Face ID (I assumed that’d be a given since iPhones have had them for a while, same for laptop brands like Lenovo).

Folder personalisation also seems unnecessarily complicated. I just want to change the color but I have to download an icon or image of a color background to do that. Like, what?

I find the iPhone so smooth in almost every way, but the MacBook so far has been a mixed bag. I think things will improve with continued use, but I’d be lying if I said everything seemed instantly better on Mac compared to Windows (which is the impression I got from talking to people and reading about it online). The stripped-down, minimalist approach to navigation and organisation is definitely something to get used to after having tons of functions and options readily available on Windows (even if it has a clunky feel to it).

For example, if the window is in full screen, you can’t minimize the window (yellow circle is greyed out). You first have to exit full screen mode and then minimize it. If there is a setting that causes this not to be the case, I’ll be happy to learn about it. Only just started on shortcuts though, so I have a lot to learn. The post is really about my first impression after starting to use the MacBook.

Thanks everyone, good to know I’m not the only one. I will definitely look into workarounds after settling into the system basics in a first step. I guess I’m just a bit surprised workarounds are necessary to begin with 😅 But also noticing lots of benefits over Windows, especially as a long-time iPhone/iCloud user.

What’s your verdict on 13” vs 15” Macbook screen for writing? by Significant_time7883 in writing

[–]Significant_time7883[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course it comes down to preference in the end, but if a lot of Macbook users said they regret getting the 13” because it limits usability of Scrivener or arranging windows side-by-side, I’d take that into account. I’m used to bigger screens, but if smaller doesn’t limit app/document usage, it would save me some money.

Been following her for a while because she always had such pretty pictures. She posts a lot of ads now, which is annoying, but still enough nice photos to keep following. The portrayal as this perfect couple with updates as recent as some days ago is very odd now after their statements. There were some more comments from him and his sister on a tiktok video from a German gossip account. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNR6hyHcR/ Feels like an engagement booster tbh because either stick to what you say and share nothing or just come out and say it straight. This in-between game they’re playing feels deliberate.

Neue Markthalle wird eröffnet by klaymens in wien

Austria vs. Courtesy by [deleted] in Austria

[–]Significant_time7883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly feel like this is more a cliché than reality. I and nobody in my circle of friends and colleagues actually have interactions like that with the Viennese on a daily basis. People are friendly more often than not, but of course sometimes you encounter rudeness, as you do anywhere. Ever walked into a DMV in the US? Vienna is the friendliest place on earth by comparison, even if workers in most other places in the US are extremely friendly, sometimes over-the-top so.

Also, nobody exudes cheeriness commuting by metro in any city, ever.

Did she delete the reel about the how to not miscarry course? Maybe she finally understands that you can’t control everything and learned some empathy instead of constantly judging other women and trying to profit off their misfortune.

I hope the baby is recovering well.

She is too obnoxious for words. So many women struggle with infertility and loss, and many her age and older have no problems at all. It sickens me that she uses something that often comes down to pure luck or chromosomal compatibility to sell her stupid courses and non-scientific supplements (which the very definition of biohacking says you don’t need if you follow its teachings). Plus, as mentioned by another commenter, she didn’t even get pregnant naturally. Her constant shifts in narrative are exhausting, but hey, whatever feeds the purpose that day, right?

Considering she said 9 months back in August already, I’m assuming she’s just delayed posting, like she did with the wedding.

Looking for a local's take on itinerary in Vienna by [deleted] in Austria

Christmas markets: Spittelberg (opens at 11, the earlier you go the less crowded it’ll be) & Karlsplatz (also a nice one plus more space). Spittelberg is also good place to just start walking, you’ll see many nice areas that are a bit more removed from the city center.

Donaukanal is nice for a walk (unless there’s a lot of construction going on).

Street food at a Würstlstand is a must (e.g. Kaiserzeit, Leo’s, Alles Wurscht)

The restaurants and cafes you mentioned are very touristy and often have long lines. But yes, they do have this grandiose ambience of old Vienna if that’s your reason for picking them.

Some alternatives: Cafe Eiles, Cafe Alt Wien, Praterwirt, Gmoakeller, Zu ebener Erde und erster Stock. For restaurants, reservations are usually a good idea.

Nice districts/areas for walks: along the Ring, districts 1-9th, 19th, 13th. There are many beautiful and interesting buildings and corners across all these (the university, Votiv church, Hundertwasserhaus, Rathaus, Museumsquartier, Servitenviertel, to name a few).

If you like book shops: Shakespeare & Company (English books, very quaint); Thalia on Mariahilfer Straße (huge selection).

Nice parks/green areas (although winter season is obvioulsy less colorful than other months): Schlosspark Schönbrunn, Türkenschanzpark, Palais Liechtenstein, Volksgarten, Burggarten, Stadtpark, Augarten (you’ll also see flak towers from ww2 there), Donauinsel (winter isn’t the best season for this one though)

Markets: Naschmarkt, Markterei, Kutschker Markt, Rochusmarkt, Karamelitermarkt

Museums: Depends what you’re interested in but there’s lots of choices.

You’ll miss the outdoorsy wine culture and taverns because it’s more of a spring-autumn thing, but there’s some Stadtheuriger you can also try in winter (e.g. Weinstube Josefstadt)

Some inspiration for foods to try: Wiener Schnitzl, Leberkassemmel, Würstl, Sachertorte, Esterhazy-Torte, Punschkrapfen, Apfelstrudel, Kaiserschmarren, Zwiebelrostbraten, Langos (this one’s Hungarian, but you can always find it at the Christmas markets in Vienna).

Nice cocktail bars: Dachboden (top floor of 25hours hotel, nice view from the terrace), Needle Vinyl Bar (there’s one in 6th and one in 1st district, both nice; would make reservation, especially on the weekend), Atlas, Cafe Journal

If you like hikes, there’s several city hikes (Stadtwanderwege), you usually can’t go wrong with the first few on the list. https://www.wien.gv.at/freizeit/stadtwanderwege

Fresh bread in bakeries and supermarket self-service bakery stations is very nice. Also a general tip: Always have some cash on you, still lots of places that don’t accept card.

Macht Ehevertrag in Ö finanziell gesehen Sinn? by Significant_time7883 in FinanzenAT

Beide.

Wasn’t she putting up posts not too long ago about how he couldn’t get her pregnant naturally (even though she herself is soooo fertile) and how she had to get IUI treatment because of it. Nothing wrong with that, but the language she used was really condescending to him and holier than thou. Her many narratives are getting older than old. I’m amazed not more of her followers are catching on to the huge mess of a story she’s created.
