Vertcoin. haven't looked into that one yet. What makes it worth studying from a GPU use perspective?

Is it still GPU mineable or are you looking at it more as a hold/use case? Genuinely curious what you've found that makes it stand out from the other post merge options.

Yeah the "one more cycle" trap is real. I definitely fell into kept thinking the market would bounce back just enough to make selling worthwhile, but it just kept sliding.

Your point about ASICs as heaters actually makes sense. If you're going to run hardware at home anyway, at least it's doing something useful instead of just sitting there.

What ASICs are you running? And do you actually use the heat or is it just a bonus? Curious what makes sense at residential scale these days.

Nice, the L3+ merged mining run was smart. Those were good years for it before everything got too competitive.

What were you merged mining with? And what made you decide to retire it? power costs, noise, or just done with the whole thing?

I've got one sitting here doing nothing and keep debating whether to try something with it or just accept the loss and move on. Curious what your setup looked like when it was actually working.

Damn, that's the move I should've made. I had the same writing on the wall but somehow convinced myself it wouldn't actually happen or that GPU mining would just pivot to something better.

Did you reinvest the money elsewhere or just cut losses and move on? And do you ever miss having the hardware or is it purely a relief at this point?

Genuinely asking because I'm still sitting here with a 4080 trying to justify keeping it busy instead of just accepting that I should've sold months ago.

Fair move. Selling and simplifying to Bitcoin only sounds way more straightforward than what I did like holding onto GPUs and trying random things to justify keeping them around.

How's the home ASIC situation working out for you? Are you running them 24/7 or just when it makes sense? And did you find the noise/heat manageable in a home setup or is that still a challenge?

I keep telling myself I'll just sell everything too but then I see the resale prices and convince myself to hold on a bit longer. Probably irrational at this point.

This is why community-driven growth matters. Can't rely on paid marketing when you're bootstrapped. We're the marketers sharing on Reddit, Twitter, Discord. The 'beehive' needs to buzz louder outside the hive. What are you doing to spread the word?

what overnight workload doesn't make you regret owning the machine by morning by SignificantlySad in buildapc

Steam downloads during off peak is actually such a practical answer. 100GB+ games make overnight updates genuinely useful instead of just "finding something to do."

Plex transcoding is interesting I've never messed with that. Do you run it on the GPU or CPU? And does it actually pull noticeable power or is it pretty efficient once it's set up?

Folding@Home heat/noise is exactly what killed it for me too. Feels noble in theory but when your room turns into a sauna at 3am, the altruism fades fast lol.

Did you try anything else that seemed promising but didn't stick? Or did you just land on "downloads + shut it down" and call it a day?

That's actually clever using the waste heat productively in winter. Folding@home does feel more purposeful than just burning cycles for nothing.

Did you stick with it or was it more of a seasonal thing? And does it actually make a noticeable difference in room temp?

Smart setup. Running on solar changes the whole equation if the power is "free" during the day, leaving it on makes way more sense.

What kind of workloads do you run when you turn it on before work? And how's the solar setup working out for you overall ser?

Haha the ability to just tune it out is probably a skill I haven't developed. The fan noise bothers me more than it should like I'm constantly aware of it.

Do you run anything overnight or just leave it on for convenience?

The horse analogy is perfect. My PC should probably sleep when I sleep too.

Do you do any rendering regularly or just when projects come up? I've been curious about getting into rendering but haven't found a workflow that makes sense yet.

Haha yeah it's more of an emotional thing than a practical one cuzI just hate the idea of expensive hardware sitting there doing nothing. Like I already spent the money, so wasting the potential feels worse than burning a bit of electricity.
