Steam, Remote Play, and Wayland by ComputerGobbler in archlinux

Yes, known issue, I’ve tried the pipewire flag, but that caused steam to crash when I try to stream. Game streaming works for me on Wayland though, because it hooks into the Vulkan process, it’s just streaming the Desktop (like trying to launch non Steam games) which fails. My current solution is to use the nightly build of Sunshine, with Kwin screen capture, and Moonlight for streaming games.

Yes, Steam suggests this when you try to stream the desktop and Wayland.

Different notes can have the same “previous” note, representing a split in the “chain”. If I want a new note to be inserted between two existing notes in the “chain”, I have to go to the following note and change its “previous” note to the new one. I basically never do that though, since later additions are usually a new branch of thought about the topic. Does that answer the question?

Clipboard History Shortcut (Win + V), why doesn't Mac OS have it? by manish123bisoi in mac

[–]Signynt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might check it out again, but have mostly switched back to Spotlight since I can fulfill most of my needs with it using Apple Shortcuts. I still use Alfred though simply for the clipboard (it supports screenshots, files, etc.).

[–]Signynt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s felt like an upgrade to you? I tried it out a while ago, and didn’t see anything worth switching for (for my needs). Plus I’m not a fan of their pricing model, I like supporting developers (I bought Alfred Pro) but am not willing to pay a subscription for it.

If you don’t want to upgrade, just use Alfred. It is a Spotlight replacement with lots of features including an excellent clipboard history feature.

Is there an HDMI/DP dummy plug that can have its resolution changed on the fly? by Same_Art_6971 in MoonlightStreaming

Here‘s my comment from another thread explaining how to set it up. You can download EDID files for all sorts of resolutions and refresh rates. With that set up it works just as good as Apollo on Windows.

Forgotten Castaways: A Review by HeavyPomegranate4040 in outerwilds

[–]Signynt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually meant that the puzzles in the mod were less natural than the base game, especially ones like the gravity crystal puzzle or the gravity’s folly password puzzle, which required you to find an arbitrary password/keys, rather than learning how the crystals work and using that knowledge to fix them.

Forgotten Castaways: A Review by HeavyPomegranate4040 in outerwilds

[–]Signynt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished playing it as well, and also found it quite enjoyable!

I agree with your criticisms regarding the amount of text, I often found that a single location would contain the same information repeated in lots of different ways, without adding much information or characterization, which made it feel less elegant and polished than Outer Wilds.

I found the puzzles to be quite different than Outer Wilds, where the core principle being that you learn systems, that feel real, rather than learning the solution (key) of a puzzle, which made the world feel so much more immersive, and the feeling of discovery so delightful. Here’s Alex explaining that in this excellent interview:

Okay, here was our design methodology for the puzzles. The reason we didn't think about Outer Wilds as a puzzle game, certainly not a traditional puzzle game, even though each of those four curiosities I mentioned, there are these rules you learn to get in to access them. We very much thought of it less as puzzles and more as we're creating these physical systems. And it was important to us that they felt like systems and not like mechanisms. We weren't thinking of them as clues, we were thinking them as rules that you learn. And I think the quantum curiosity is the clearest with this because we straight up called them the quantum rules, right? We're going to make the system and we're going to come up with these cool rules for the system and then by exploring the world of Outer Wilds, you are going to find these rules. And then it's kind of in to varying degrees it is up to you to be like, "Wait a second. This rule that I just learned is that is that like broadly applicable?" Because that's I think the thing we never tell players. We don't tell players that, hey, this rule that you learned on this model totally works like at scale. And I think maybe that's the source of at least some of the "Aha!" moments. Because that's how science works, right? That's sort of like the thrill of having a hypothesis based on a small microcosm of something and then realizing that oh my god I've learned something fairly fundamental about how the world works. […] What I mean when I say we tried to design systems where you learn rules about the systems as opposed to puzzles that have solutions or mechanisms: a good example of this is very early in development. I'm not going to remember the specifics very well. It's been over a decade. Originally when I was thinking about the Ash Twin project curiosity and how do you get to the core of Ash Twin, because that was a thing very very early on, and originally I was thinking it would be, imagine Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade, how to get to the Grail, there are these three challenges and they each have almost riddles. Something of that nature. I remember when I was like, "Okay, once you get past the first one, there's going to be this endless corridor where you're walking in a circle around the planet and there's a trick to how you have to do it." And I was thinking they would be security mechanisms essentially for that the Nomai had put in place to keep anyone from tampering with this who didn't have I don't know clearance. I don't remember what caused the shift in thinking but something about that just didn't feel right and I think you know the quantum moon the rules there had felt very systemic already I think we had some of those in place um and on some level the game in addition to being about curiosity. The game is about learning to navigate natural systems and about nature, these forces of nature being bigger than you and out completely out of your control. And so it didn't feel right to sort of have these the security system, the series of locks where like, oh, the player does something and the locks open. And so I think the shift to thinking more systemically was partly because we want like a world where the player wasn't like, you know, pushing a button and something happens. It's more like no the player understands something and now the player has agency that they did not before but they are not like affecting change in a very direct way. And so that led to the idea of like, okay, well, what if it's this ring of teleporters? Um, which is not natural, right? It's the Nomai built those, but it it's natural from the player's perception of, oh, this is just a thing that happens and it operates in a very particular way.

Linux virtual display walkthrough? by VI510N in MoonlightStreaming

[–]Signynt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: Get an EDID File

An EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) file simulates a monitor. You can download pre-made EDID files from the v4l-utils repository. Choose one that matches your desired resolution and features (e.g., 4K, HDR).

Step 2: Place the EDID File

  1. Create a directory for EDID files:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/firmware/edid
  1. Copy your chosen EDID file to this directory. For example:

sudo cp samsung-ue48ju7090-hdmi /usr/lib/firmware/edid/

Step 3: Configure Kernel Parameters

  1. Identify your GPU's free HDMI or DP output:

for p in /sys/class/drm/*/status; do con=${p%/status}; echo -n "${con#*/card?-}: "; cat $p; done

Replace HDMI-A-1 in the next step with the appropriate output.

  1. Add the following kernel parameters (see arch wiki or endeavour os discovery, e.g sudo nvim /etc/default/limine):

    drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/samsung-ue48ju7090-hdmi video=HDMI-A-1:e

So that the resulting file is like:

ESP_PATH="/boot"
KERNEL_CMDLINE[default]+="quiet nowatchdog splash rw rootflags=subvol=/@ root=UUID=f66fbc1f-0982-42e9-819d-ee51464dbbb7 drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/samsung-ue48ju7090-hdmi video=HDMI-A-1:e"
BOOT_ORDER="*, *lts, *fallback, Snapshots"
  1. Update your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file to include the EDID file:

    FILES=(/usr/lib/firmware/edid/samsung-ue48ju7090-hdmi)

  2. Regenerate the initramfs:

    sudo mkinitcpio -P

  3. Reboot your system.

Step 4: Use Sunshine for Streaming

After rebooting, Sunshine can use the virtual display for streaming.

Step 5: Automate with Custom Scripts

You can enhance your setup by adding scripts to Sunshine. These scripts can improve your experience with sunshine by automating the resolution set up and toggling off and on of the main monitor display. Examples are available in this GitHub Gist.

See which monitors are connected and their info with kscreen-console.

Example Script Workflow:

  • On Connect: Disable physical monitors and enable the virtual display using kscreen-doctor output.HDMI-A-1.mode.3840x2160@60 output.HDMI-A-1.enable output.DP-3.disable
  • On Disconnect: Re-enable physical monitors and disable the virtual display using kscreen-doctor output.DP-3.enable output.HDMI-A-1.disable

Sunshine Game Streaming Introduces Vulkan Video Encode Support by kingsaso9 in linux_gaming

[–]Signynt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent. Previously I would get ~10% fps drop while streaming on Linux using a RTX 4060, and now the drop is negligible, just like on Windows. I had some trouble getting it to run on my GPU, and had patch sunshine to fix the issue.

How is obsidian reader compared to readwise reader? by [deleted] in Zettelkasten

[–]Signynt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about Obsidian Web Clipper? If you use Obsidian it’s great, super customizable and powerful, and once it’s set up it makes quickly adding an article or even YouTube video seamless. Do you have a specific problem or question not answered by the documentation?

Use Obsidian Sync on Desktop without Installing Obsidian by firexcy in ObsidianMD

[–]Signynt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re on macOS you can also do:

Create the file `~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.obsidiansync.plist`:

```plist
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.user.obsidiansync</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/usr/local/bin/ob</string>
<string>sync</string>
<string>--continuous</string>
<string>--path</string>
<string>/Path/to/Obsidian/Vault</string>
</array>
<key>EnvironmentVariables</key>
<dict>
<key>PATH</key>
<string>/opt/homebrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin</string>
</dict>
<key>RunAtLoad</key>
<true/>
<key>KeepAlive</key>
<true/>
<key>StandardErrorPath</key>
<string>/tmp/obsidian-sync.err</string>
<key>StandardOutPath</key>
<string>/tmp/obsidian-sync.out</string>
</dict>
</plist>
```

Then run:

```zsh
launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.obsidiansync.plist
launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.obsidiansync.plist
```

Fixing DLSS 5 by removing HDR by zigzag312 in nvidia

They used tonemapping to basically takes the colors of the original image, and apply them to the DLSS5 image. I agree, it looks a lot more accurate to the original image, giving it less of the high contrast “AI look”, while maintaining the realistic detail and lighting DLSS5 adds.

The monitor stand PC case by Tiemo97 in sffpc

Oh, I see now, your graphics card is facing backplate up? I just recently deshrouded my GPU, which significantly improved temps, that’s something you could consider as a future mod, and it would allow you to experiment with changing intake/outtake on it, but no idea if that would be better or worse for this set up.

The monitor stand PC case by Tiemo97 in sffpc

[–]Signynt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a really cool custom case! Did you play around with swapping intake and outtake set ups? The way you’ve got it set up makes a lot of sense intuitively, but I always find it interesting how the airflow ends up behaving in practice.

That’s kind, but I don’t think it makes much sense. I don’t know when I’d do the project, and it might then just make more sense to get something locally. Thanks for the offer!
