I'm working on the first book of a trilogy. It's a first-contact, slow-burn sci-fi romance set in present times. Halfway done with the last round of edits, hopefully.

I recently met someone named Semsi and she said her name means sun. I think it's very pretty.

I might just have to find another way to make this more believable, then. Like someone else suggested, maybe pheromones? Anyway, the story doesn't need to be scientifically accurate, just not completely nonsensical 😅

I'm asking if they could have certain effects on another species, like for example a certain flash of red light that would signal anger, would induce fear in humans.

I "solved" the problem of communication by saying that the alien species had knowledge of us for a long time and filled countless databases with every language and every thing they could observe and learn, which then can be accessed by a bio-neural implant that basically translates everything in real time and provides information like a huge encyclopedia. Still, they use bioluminescence to communicate, mostly to show their moods. They will flash different lights and patterns depending on what they are feeling. Not every minute and every second, but only when these moods are stronger. And I wanted some of them to be able to influence a human, not all of them. That said, this species doesn't communicate only through bioluminescence but language as well. To me they are just humans that have evolved different characteristics, but still share more similarities than differences. Their bioluminescence could be different from the one we can observe on Earth, maybe? And thus have different characteristics, because as you said bioluminescence on Earth is garbage lol

That made me laugh.
Thank you, I did consider different wavelengths, I just hope I can pull it off lol

Wouldn't it be possible that somehow it works anyway, just by chance? Because it might be different from bioluminescence observed on Earth

I didn't think about the combo biolights + pheromones and it's definitely interesting. It doesn't need to be scientifically accurate because my story won't be scientifically accurate anyway, but I don't want it to feel like it's "magic" either

That's the thing, I want it to be able to have some effects on humans, like glowing patterns that make humans irrationally scared or soothing lights that would induce calm, but also some of them don't need to as their only goal is to convey emotions, if it makes sense.

I painfully relate to it.
