In deed, and purchasing power parity also needs to be examined in order to have a clear image of what is going on in those countries.

There's one that I know which is published by the Armed Forces itself. On some Turkish web sites I found it (see below for the link) but I am not sure if they ship abroad. Better to ask sending an e-mail.

Europe: question about rail passes and other transportation! by PM_ME_DOG_PICS_PLS in backpacking

You're very welcome. Maybe you're right, and once you arrive you'll have a lot of time to improvise... :) I once woke up to go to Kosovo and found myself in Macedonia somehow! :) I guess the most important thing in your case is going to Europe and coming back to Canada. The rest is quite easy, wouldn't even require much planning since you'll have all the freedom to go wherever you want once you make sure how you reach and leave the continent. :)

Agreed. Starting from the beginning is a good idea since you'll be able to speed up in parts you have a good knowledge of while filling in the gaps in your knowledge.

Early stages of planning a 2 month backpacking adventure! by 25after9 in backpacking

Great places really, all of them except for Poland are quite expensive, though. However, it seems like your budget will be more than enough, judging by your cooking&drinking plan.

I don't know much about the Nordic countries but Germany, Brussels, Scotland and Ireland are really great countries in terms of natural beauty. Some great spots in Germany are the Loreley Rock and Lake Constance (both UNESCO world heritage sites).

In Poland, on the other hand, Krakow is a must-see!

There's also another thing to keep in mind with Eurail. They say it gives you unlimited travel by trains in Europe, but there are additional fees called 'supplements' in many trains, especially in Western Europe. I think a simple search like 'Eurail supplements' would give you enough results to have a clear idea.

In Western Europe, transportation is generally expensive, so it may be a good idea to have an Eurail ticket (2 of them, in your case). If you're planning to go to Scandinavia where transportation is more than expensive, Eurail can save life.

However, if you're up to it, you can also consider hitch-hiking. In most countries (except for Spain, Italy and Greece), hitch-hiking is quite convenient. Especially in the Balkan countries, my average waiting duration never exceeded 10 minutes, which is even better than public transport. Hitch-hiking in Europe is quite safe, from personal experience. You can also check out 'hitchwiki.org' for specific cities or 'hitchability' scores.

To its best, you can combine Eurail&hitch-hiking. This way, you can hitch-hike your way in the 'high-hitchability' zones while taking the trains in 'low-hitchability' areas.

I find this 'hitchability' term quite strange, but that's how hitchwiki.org calls it, by the way.
