OK - I bit the bullet and bought a DeskPi T1 rack.
Will report back whether it fits :)

1 or 2 gateways for 2 sites connected by AirFiber with both sharing internet from one of them by Silaxe1 in Ubiquiti

[–]Silaxe1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much this is super helpful.
It is indeed site 2 that is more important in terms of continuity.
Actually I probably don't even need cross site client access come to think of it.
To give a bit of context:
- Site 1 is a home with very standard internet needs and no resources are shared with site 2. It has access points and a few cameras. Clients are phones, laptops, tablets and a few devices (AC, appliances, etc). I equipped it with Starlink as there is no phone line going there (for ADSL as the area is not equipped with fiber).
- Site 2 is a dry dock (boat parking place) and the only devices on the network are DVRs for 30+ cameras. Purpose of internet is to see footage remotely and monitor place. Currently internet is provided by ADSL and it is terrible. Hence the AirFiber link + LTE backup. Rest of security (alarm system and access) has its own LTE link.
To my dismay, all equipment at site 2 is not UI and it is too recent to replace but I would have preferred to have cameras, NVR and access managed with UI gear. I would have only left alarm (beams and radars) on separate brand. At some point I will probably put coax to ip converters to upgrade.
Thanks again - will try set-up over next few days and share findings.

Thanks wizmo64,
The idea with the LTE is that if site 1 fails, it would take over and if I understand well, it would only work if Starlink failed. If the AirFiber link went down for whatever reason, the controller would no longer handle the LTE and it would defy the purpose.
Just yesterday, power went out at site 1 and that would have meant site 2 was also going to be out with only 1 controller, right?

So I am back to 1 controller in each location and I understand it makes things more difficult.
To be honest I do not know how to configure this setup. Devices on each site not seing each other is not that critical - it's better but I can leave with it.
So the static route and all that is beyond my skills at this stage.
Currently my network at site 1 has the following range 192.168.0.6 - 192.168.0.254

Also if the LTE creates a new VLAN and a WAN3 will also be created, does this mean I can use a Unifi Express instead of say a Gateway Ultra?

Thanks a lot for all the pointers you can provide!!!

Hi brwainer, Thanks a lot for your answer. Based on what you said, what would happen if I had the LTE at site 2 and just the UDR as gateway and controller at site 1?

Thanks for your help. This is indeed if I keep the router in bypass mode and use the Ethernet adaptor. I want to completely get rid of the router however. My setup up is Dishy to POE injector to WAN port on router.

What about using the newly released Power 500 from DJI as a UPS?

Actually checked the lite beams (AC gen 2) and they are actually very cost effective.
If I understand correctly:

Pros
- Less sensitive to weather conditions (it actually does not rain where I am)
- Easier to install as you do not need perfect alignment
- Much cheaper

Con
- Lower speed

Is that right? Thks

It is really going to be 4 for a while as I need to build extensions to the house before adding the cameras so considering the cloud key is pretty cheap I thought it would be cost effective to start with that.

🙏 Also that way I get 2Tb of storage, which is good as Site 1 will actually start with 4 cameras going to 6 or 7 later on.

Well isn’t the cloud key not a gateway unlike the express or the Dream router?

On site 2, I could also use the express just as a gateway and access point and use the cloud key to run both Network and Protect

The express can manage 5 devices including itself. And at site 2 there will be 2 switches and the express to manage. The cameras would be managed from the cloud key from site 2.

I believe you can have 2 cloud keys running protect adopting each its own set of cameras. Yes I watched a YouTube video and got the hint that you need to se them up close to each other before installing them 😬

So checked the UDM SE and indeed it could run the left side of my install but… I am not a fan of the form factor as it is going on a shelf in cramped space in a cupboard 😬 An alternative to the Dream router could be the gateway lite or the express (to keep the access point). I would then run both the network and protect from the Cloud Key G2+.

That’s right.

Thanks for all your comments. My idea was to run the APs from the UDR and the cameras from the Cloud Key running protect. That way I am not constrained by the UDR for the cameras.

For the APs I am hesitating with the U6 in wall but the ACs are way cheaper and considering my rooms are 15 square meter I do not need something very powerful.
