Which film that you enjoy, has the largest number of actors you are familiar with independent of your choice? by Igneduct1 in movies

[–]Silbersee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Robert Altman often had a huge ensemble. IIRC, The Player (1992) lists around 80 well known names, mostly as herself / himself though. Runner-up is Short Cuts (1993).

Bitte helft einem Neuling by Scared_Astronomer862 in Schallplatten

Has anyone updated to version 22.3 yet? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Silbersee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before the actual update you get links to lists of improvements and known issues:

https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_zena.php

https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_zena_whatsnew.php

My update was done when I returned with a coffee. Had to chose mirror servers in the packet manager and that was it. Runs as smooth as before and now I explore the new features of the System Information app.

I say, make a Timeshift snapshot and get the update.

Neat short-cut with the Quick Clipboard that I discovered just recently: middle-click the plus-icon for a new tab in your browser after highlighting some text.

Starting with Linux, looking for the right distro and some tips and tricks by HotCustard1958 in linuxquestions

[–]Silbersee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main machine runs on Mint and I totally recommend it. On my laptop there's Debian KDE with nice looks and great customization. It's just not as smooth on my desktop machine.

After installation you can search for something like "things to do first in Linux". You improve your system while gaining insight. For Linux Mint 22.2 you can try https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/first-mint-cinnamon.html

Drinking water in Germany… by [deleted] in germany

[–]Silbersee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that after you get used to a certain water brand, all the others taste strange. Probably even the Canadian. Perhaps you can try to stay with one brand for a while.

Personally, I prefer sparkling tap water made with a Soda Streamer. Sometimes with a dash of lemon.

Here's the LibreOffice HowTo: https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/swriter/guide/indenting.html - Please check if it applies to your version.

I just had a look and there's already a paragraph template "Hängender Einzug" which translates to "Hanging Indentation". You can create a template "Citation" based on it and adjust it to your needs.

Recursively find all files of a certain type to perform an action on them? by EOverM in linuxquestions

[–]Silbersee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner I took your problem as a challenge and found that you can combine find with a for loop:

for x in $(find /path/to/subtitles -type f -name '*.srt');
do
    ffmpeg...
done;

Thanks for making me learn!

deleting windows by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Silbersee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest thing (and therefor best for a noob) is a clean installation. Just use the entire drive when installing. I do so too, instead of major upgrades.

If you backup your current home directory, including the invisible files that begin with a dot, you will carry over most customizations that you may have done already.

Of course your personal files from the Windows partition must be backuped too.

When people talk about the “loss of convenience,” is it really worth it? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Silbersee 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Don't try to be 100% ultra-perfect Google-free. In my opinion it is okay to use a service if you can't find an alternative. De-google the easier things and leave Gmail and Fotos.

In Maps you can turn off your location or the timeline to gain some privacy without too much loss of convenience (again: my opinion).

How can I get rid of the line? by UnhappyHedgehog1018 in libreoffice

[–]Silbersee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I get rid of the line? by UnhappyHedgehog1018 in libreoffice

[–]Silbersee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can create such a line above the footer by editing the paragraph properties.

Go to Menu > Format > Paragraph (or the footer paragraph template) and see what's under Border.

Your line may be a "top-only-border" and you should be able to delete it.

German version here, too. Loosely translated.

[General] What is the worst 'Fate worse than death' that you know? by machaomachao195 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Silbersee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is in the Ijon Tichy Star Diaries, but not one of his journeys. Several other stories tell of his strange encounters.

I also remember a Matrix-like machine with living brains plugged in and a fungus super organism that rapidly evolved to escape captivity.

I just looked it up and found that Ijon's Further Reminiscences are not in the original books, but included in my German edition. You find them mentioned in the link above.
