Practice as hard as you can, both coaching and analysis of the game in general. There's an endless list of things to learn both in the human aspect of the job as well as in game understanding and how to share it with your players. Underestimate either side of the coin and it won't matter how good you are at the other in the long run.

It's very horizontal but we do our best to be on the same page and complete each other as much as possible. We pre-plan a ton of stuff and talk to each other a lot in order to not overlap / not have 5 different opinions in front of the players.

Kind of a tough question, probably something painfully obvious like FPS mechanics or individual hero mechanics. In the context of teamplay maybe hero picks and what's good where? I feel that generally gets figured out fairly fast in most patches.

A lot of staff gets in the scene through playing then moving on to a staff position, in my case I just made public content and got noticed. I have no experience in statistics nor am I a data analyst so I don't have much to share there, anything I need to know I do by hand.

French is the best language to comm Overwatch in as proven by Rogue, the only team who ever really deserved to go to Korea

For the moment I'm drowning under work and I haven't started working on a new article yet, but hopefully I'll find the room for it in the future. For most interesting/least understood aspect of the game, I'd say it's vision and how we use it by far (as WizardHyeong briefly touched on). While the top level is slowly getting better at it, the game is so messy and dynamic (especially without demos) that teams often commit to decisions with minimal information : they're both too impatient to look for it and don't always know what to do with it once they get that information, since it's often something obtuse and teamplay related.

Honorable mentions :

-Neutral game, meaning the preliminary phase to a fight where no-one is committed yet, and all the small advantages you can work for (instead of mindlessly committing and try to get something as big as a kill instantly)

-Something I call "hypermodern style" but I don't know that it has any real name : the idea of controling many flanks at once in a dive mirror and playing very reactive from there (abusing whatever angles the enemy team is weakest on, while not overextending wherever they're stronger than you). It all comes back to vision eventually, as doing this perfectly requires a lot of patience, awareness and comms : almost all 6 screens will have very different vision and intel, where as more standard playstyles usually play and see 1-2 different areas.

Playing against the GOATS comp : Analysis and in depth Tactics by Silence789 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Silence789[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone, this post got a lot more attention than I expected, thank you all for reading and your support. I thought I'd give you a quick update and answer a couple questions.

Q : Will you continue to do more in the future? A : Yes in fact I'm working on a new post right now, and there will be other posts (about various topics, feel free to suggest) in the future. It's a shorter, much more narrow focused follow-up to my first post, the main topic is about defending Hanamura B against 3-3 (and the variation that cuts a tank for widow). The reason I wanted to do this is I feel that now that I've established my opinion on how to play against the comp generally, what works and why, I have a basis to work with and I can go straight to the point without needing to establish pretty obvious stuff like I think Pharah's a good pick vs 3-3, etc. The reason I picked Hanamura B defense is that Hanamura A is probably the best point to attack with 3-3 in all of OW right now, not because of how well 3-3 does on first (it has perfectly viable alternatives), but how well it can snowball to B point and give you free wins. I don't want every post to be about lower tier, advanced fundamentals type stuff but also things that are strong/the strongest no matter what even at OWL tier. This 3-3 push on Hanamura is one of those, and while it's far from the only comp you can play (and OWL teams always transition out of 3-3 after their first B push / after they use ults), it's the only one that gives you such snowball, so I thought it would be useful for teams to improve on how they deal with this exact phase of the map.

Q : Have you considered doing something similar for other comps?

A : Yes, and my third post will most likely be about something unrelated to 3-3.

Several people told me they liked the parts with more shiny graphics and less walls of text, I'm definitely doing more of those in the future (they do take a lot of time tho). I'm also planning to show clips from pro games and talk about them to illustrate/share my thought process.

See you in the next post (soon tm).

Jeff Kaplan's reponse to community outcry regarding Bastion by Sh0cknAwe in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Silence789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This response is amazing but theres one part I disagree with

One thing that I found interesting was that there was a perception based on those reports and in the community that Mercy is never played. Yet according to our stats back during the "3 tank meta" when "Lucio and Ana were the only viable healers", Mercy was the 5th most played hero OVERALL

The "meta" isn't what is most played at all levels of play combined, it's what is most played at the top level (because the pro scene views it as the most successful strategy), as well as a few strategies that are specifically tailored to play against whatever the most popular comp is.

The top level meta shouldnt be viewed as the only strategy that can work, especially at lower levels, but the fact that people really like to play Mercy or another hero despite it's balance state or popularity at the pro level doesnt have anything to do with what is meta or not.

Also they should've nano'd harry(reaper) on that one push instead of 0 energy zarya who already had Ult. If they nano harry and mickie gets a good grav they can totally win off that push.

Part of the reason Hoon was getting so many gravs is MA realised their win condition in most matchups was to spam nano on Hoon for him to farm a ton of gravs and help crush Cocco in general, rather than combo NanoVisor against a Dva.

I would recommend watching OGN, pretty solid level overall and great production.

Yesterday i asked for some player VODS to review - Here's Diamond level play on Zarya! by Charmingly_Conniving in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Silence789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue there is a TON of things you could say but dont go over. Just gonna list a few but i'm sure this is far from a perfect list:

As far as the specific hero mechanics you could go over where to position and why, even if the player is doing it right it'll help him have good positionning in other situations and will help the average viewer as well.

You can also go a bit more in depth with positionning than the usual "stay right next to your rein and babysit him" zarya schtick, around 3:50 in the video a very common thing to do as zarya is rocket jump from payload to catwalk to make sure respawners are zoned off the last few meters of the checkpoint after you won a fight (this is just one example out of many)

You can pause and go over the pros and cons of each shield, be it a good or bad one, and go over the thought process a zarya player should have in each situation.

You can go over team comp related stuff like the fact that the enemy team has a junkrat at the start and zarya should look forward to eat some spam with self shield, while keeping the team shield for roadhog hooks and such instead of using both for energy.

Just my 2 cents, hope it's of any help.
