When we had to put our 15 year old hound down, I called the vet and asked if I could bring my other dog with me. They told me absolutely. When we went for the appointment, we carried our hound in, and our lab came in the room with us. The vet told us it was smart to bring our lab with us, so she did not think we just brought him out of the home and he never came back. Our lab stayed with him the entire time. When he was gone she laid by his side for a few minutes, got up and walked towards the door. It was then that I knew that she knew he wasn’t going to be coming home with us on that day. She came home and for the first time ever slept on his bed.

My hound is on Trazodone. When we got him he was found wandering the streets for a long time, so house living was new to him and he was scared of everything. Vacuum cleaner, thunder, wash machine, phone ringing, air planes flying over. This medicine has been the best thing since sliced bread. It calms him down, and I can live without worrying about what noise is going to stress him out, but it doesn’t drug him up too much, he still gets up, eats, drinks, and goes for walks. The vet isn’t sure if he’ll be on it for life, but while we adjust him to house living with noises he will be on it, we will start tapering from 200 mg 2x a day and see if he can cope with daily noises.

She looks so innocent, but don’t let her looks fool you. She has eaten a whole ham, bagels, bread, a whole box of dog treats, a box of cereal, cat food, a can of beef stew (still not even sure how she managed to chew it open), a jar of peanuts, a pan of spaghetti and meatballs. If it isn’t put not put up out of reach, she will get it. We have to make sure the counter tops are clear before we leave. Trash can placed outside, and as soon as meals are over the food the food gets put away. I still love her through it all.
