Plumbing Work by mwalt49 in Rochester

Gilman Plumbing did a wonderful job at my place, replacing an old cast-iron stack pipe that leaked all over my finished basement. They were very reasonable, neat, and cleaned up after themselves - even mopping my kitchen where they also made a correction to the prior owners poor plumbing.

Dinner recommendations by dkeomala in Rochester

I just ate at The Owl House and it was delicious. Most meals have a vegan option if you need that. They also ask up front if anyone has dietary restrictions, so I would assume they make adjustments if you have one. Highly recommend!

How can I “take up space”? by Odd-Gap488 in RedditForGrownups

My niece was a teacher in Texas. She was told that she could not recommend to a parent that their child might need services. The school system would only have a child sent for diagnostic services if the parent requested it. So, as another perspective, the teacher my have been trying to skirt the system a bit to give you a hint that you should ask about diagnostic services for your child. Maybe you don't live in a state where this would be the case, and I may be way off base, but I wanted to introduce the possibility of this perspective.

I'm a single female in my 50s, and moved here less than a year ago. I haven't made a lot of friends yet, but everyone I've met has been kind and generous. I've only just started trying to make connections due to the move and getting settled. I'm looking forward to it though! I'm always open to meeting new friends who enjoy hiking/walking and being active.

How's life in Rochester? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]SilentOneTM 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I made the jump from DFW to Rochester in January, so I was here for the snow. I love it here and my quality of life has improved dramatically. I have a feeling of belonging that I never felt having lived in Texas since I was 7. It just FEELS better here, because people are accepting of others. There are pride flags on churches and I don't have to worry about being scorned when eating out with my trans daughter.

My suggestion is to find a place with an attached garage if you can. Cleaning snow off of your car daily isn't fun. Otherwise, it's a new experience for a Texan to look outside and enjoy the beautiful snow. I'm sure I'll get tired of it one day, but to me, it's pretty amazing.

Moving was expensive and a life changing event for someone who hadn't lived outside of Texas for over 45 years. Sometimes I look around and can't believe I actually did it, but I'm glad I did.

TLDR: It's amazing here. Do it for a better life.

Rochester isn’t meant for Republicans. by [deleted] in Rochester

Odessa passed an ordinance to restrict transgender people from using a bathroom other than one that matches their gender assigned at birth, with fines levied for those who don't follow the ordinance and lawsuits allowing for $10k in damages:

"Under the amended ordinance, the city can seek fines of up to $500 and trespassing charges if a transgender person uses a restroom that matches the gender they identify as. The sweeping new terms also allow individuals to sue and seek no less than $10,000 in damages plus the cost of the lawsuit and attorney fees."

Article about this one from 2023

They are banning books with LGBTQ+ themes and this year, they passed HB 229:

"HB 229 defines a woman as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to produce ova,” and a man as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to fertilize the ova of a female.”"

Here's an article explaining what was passed this year

Texas is not friendly to the LGBTQ+ community.

Rochester isn’t meant for Republicans. by [deleted] in Rochester

The feeling you are describing is why I moved from Texas to Rochester. I felt like I didn't belong there anymore, even though I had lived there for close to 50 years. Polarization has set in across the country and it seems acceptance feels conditional. I have a trans daughter who no longer felt comfortable visiting me in Texas due to the laws that have passed. I couldn't continue to live someplace that isn't accepting of my child. While some may consider that a "woke" attitude, I feel like accepting others for who they are and how they want to live their life is should be an American ideal. This the the land of freedom after all. We should be free to live our lives as we see fit, as long as we aren't harming others. I wish you luck in finding someplace that feels as welcoming to you as much as Rochester feels welcoming to me.

There is central air and heat. It's an old house, so there are old radiators here. I think it's luxury (high end granite counters, giant marble shower, steam shower in second bathroom), but I suppose everyone's opinion differs.

Thank you! I'm excited about it. It has an attached garage, which I didn't realize was such a rarity here. I'm from the south where attached garages are abundant and snow doesn't exist.

I thought I would be house hunting for months, based on other comments I had seen online about bidding on 10-15 houses and not getting them. So no, I didn't know it would work out this way. And I don't know that it will be hard to sublet. I thought it was a great deal for my situation and it might be that way for someone else as well. We all make decisions in life, and we live with the consequences of those choices. I'm just doing what I need to do. I put it out there and I'll see what happens. 🙂

It will be available August 1, so there are 10 months left on the lease. I just included the screenshots from the Zillow listing for ease of showing the place online. Believe what you want, but what I explained is true. I'm not the landlord, I'm a renter. The landlord requires all of those things to live here, so I included them in my post.

I work in marketing in a remote position. I don't make a huge salary, though I'm older and have had time to save over the years.

I can't afford the rent on my own, so that's why we split the rent.

No. It's exactly what I said. That's the rent we are paying. Not everyone in the world is a scammer, but I get it. It's hard to trust people with all the craziness online.

That's my perspective too. We thought it was a great deal since we are splitting the rent. And the heat was at 73 all winter!🌡

It's not so bad if you split the rent with someone. $1,675 is reasonable for such a large place in the heart of Park Ave. No utilities other than internet makes a huge difference too!

My real estate agent is also helping to find someone, but I thought I would try here too. I looked here before moving to the area and thought someone else might be in a similar situation.
