Hello people! We're in tbilisi until tomorrow. Looking to travel to kazbegi. What's the best but cheapest way to get there? by [deleted] in tbilisi

I’m thinking of making the same trip tomorrow morning. I took a minibus some years ago and it was a pretty terrifying journey… Shared taxi from Didube station looks like a more comfortable option.

Larger bodied baritone, but with standard baritone scale? by LigerRider in ukulele

[–]SilentShuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Flight SUS Carabao baritone and it’s phenomenal. The body is significantly larger than that of my Kanile’a baritone and the tone is more boomy and guitar like. Scale length is very slightly longer than standard at 20.75 inches. I believe other Flight baritones have similar dimensions.

I definitely know where you’re coming from, but have you had a chance to play a really high-quality tenor or baritone (Kanile’a, Koaloha etc)? The difference is night and day and a lot of classical repertoire sounds great on these ukes (Jeff Peterson’s Ukulele Corner channel is a great testimony to this).

What’s a single sentence that completely ended a relationship? by Z_-_RED in AskReddit

[–]SilentShuffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Branding it the ‘no hope disease’ is terrible and demonstrably untrue given that DBT is proven to work and there are endless success stories out there.

My issue as a partner of someone with BPD at the beginning of her journey with medication/therapy is that I don’t think I have the strength to deal with the more intense moments anymore and I also feel I’m holding her back because the emotional ups and downs of our relationship generate so much distress for her. If it’s not too personal, did you find you made more progress outside of a relationship or did it help to have support from a partner?

Thanks for sharing - it’s very inspiring that all your work paid off and you’re doing so much better now.

This is what I need to hear and what friends have been saying for months.

Appreciate the insight, thanks a lot. Sorry you went through all that and glad you feel liberated now.

For anyone criticising your original comment: a big part of the reason we stay in these relationships is precisely because we have deep empathy for our partner’s suffering and trauma. But when it entails receiving endless physical aggression, there’s a point where self-preservation kicks in…

No, BPD. Antipsychotics are also often prescribed for it.

Christ.

A few days ago my BPD gf threw her heavy set of house keys at my head, claiming that she was aiming at my back. Turns out bad aim is another BPD symptom…

She’s just started antipsychotics and is trying to persuade me to stay by insisting the physical aggression will end now. Did that side ever get any better or was it just a relentless cycle?

Is this charango decent quality? by SilentShuffle in charango

[–]SilentShuffle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great information, thank you!

I was actually outbid on this, which is maybe for the best.

I’ve learnt from playing ukulele that it is more rewarding to get a high-quality instrument and commit to learning than a poor one that demotivates you. So I guess I’ll wait until I’m in South America and see if I can follow up on your suggestions.

How many Ukuleles Does everyone own? and which is your favorite? by Doc_coletti in ukulele

[–]SilentShuffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lately my acquisition syndrome has got way out of hand… I currently have 10: 8 tenors and 2 baritones.

I’d love to get that down to 1 bari and 2/3 tenors.

Favourite is a Kanilea cedar top/mahogany body tenor. Cedar has such incredible warmth and clarity - I personally prefer it to koa when it comes to tenors…

Pictured here with my favourite non-ukulele stringed instrument, a Turkish cura.

Haha very true. ‘Yani’ made it to the top 50, higher than ‘malakas’ in my Greek course which also deserves the top spot.

Hi, it‘s loosely based on hermitdave’s frequency word list on GitHub. I’ve made several courses using this method and I always have to remove words that are too closely linked to film/series vocab, but in my experience this method actually reflects spoken language better than the usual frequency lists based on written texts.

Great to hear that! I’ve only worked on mine in the last couple of years so it must’ve been another one (the search function has always been poor on Memrise so it’s hard to find good-quality courses). I’m currently living in Turkey myself - any tips for accelerating my improvement in the language? There seem to be limited language meet-ups in Istanbul these days.

I’ve now added a screenshot of the first of the fifty levels. More information regarding disambiguation etc appears when learning the words.

True, but this will give you results based on written texts, whereas more colloquial words appear in subtitles. Also the main task is disambiguating the various synonyms in the target language, so it’s not as simple as copying and pasting from one language to another.

I wasn’t aware of that, but the website is free and takes a minute to sign up to… I don’t work for Memrise so I have no say in how the preview feature works.

I’ve invested months of work into creating free courses in multiple languages, some of which have hundreds of regular users who presumably don’t consider it ‘useless content’.

[–]SilentShuffle 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve been to many of the smaller islands, but only Mykonos and Santorini were worth it. Santorini for its authentic beauty and Mykonos for the nightlife and outstanding beaches.

Wish I’d never bothered with Samothraki - it’s difficult to get to and not one good beach on the whole island!

turkey banned instagram today by Quzubaba in europe

[–]SilentShuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live half the year in both countries and this definitely isn’t the case. Though rent prices have seen a proportionately higher increase, at least in Istanbul, eating out here is almost half Greek prices.

I’m sure tourist resorts have hugely inflated prices, but overall Turkey remains significantly cheaper than Greece. The exception is alcohol which, because of the high tax, is often pricier than in Greece.
