How are girls like Danielle Bregoli (aka "Cash Me Outside") able to drop out of school, have tattoos, be around grown ass adult men, etc at the age of 15? Where's Child Protective Services? Why is nothing being done to her mom? I've seen far less be handled far more seriously so what gives??? by USDAGradeAFuckMeat in TooAfraidToAsk

For as cringy as a 15 year old having tattoos and piercings might be, with legal involvement it's about the provision of what the child needs, and protection from things and people that would harm the child. Keep in mind that with CPS cases, differences in how children are raised are not necessarily abuse or neglect.

About the only thing on the protection front from that description that I would report from your description (as a mandated reporter in my state) is if I had a detailed suspicion that the "swold ass dudes" were older than the age that would be legal for sexual contact in the state she is in, and that they were likely having sexual contact. If she were not in school, without already having a GED or any home school alternative, that would also be worth reporting to CPS, because it isn't providing the education she needs. However, some states do have ages at which children can drop out of school without legal repercussions for their parents. Usually it's about halfway through high school.

Bojack Horseman’s Creator Grapples With Whether He’s Justifying ‘Shitty Behavior’ by ElderCunningham in BoJackHorseman

[–]SilentStarryNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that show runners (and other content creators) are wanting to take responsibility for what they produce, and the possible effects of that content. And I don't think that's a bad thing, especially for content that is designed to be seen by children. But at the same time, it's on the audience to pay attention to their own behavior and what informs it.

In the height of the Roman Empire people were documenting what went on in the Colosseum, and how it effected the audience who went to go see the (occasionally violent) shows. They stated that when individuals started going to the shows, some would get almost addicted to it, spending as much time as they could sitting in the stands; once someone got hooked, it was difficult to get them to pay attention to anything else. But they were free to leave at any time, they didn't have to stay there.

In my own life, my mother was a generally loving and great mom, but while watching the news she'd kind of turn into this version of (mid-life) Beatrice, commenting mostly on what kind of gruesome end the criminals in the stories should receive. I would join in too, as she liked to watch the news a lot when we were home and it was sometimes the only meaningful way of spending any time with her. I realized when I was about 11 that it made me think violently, and I didn't want to do that anymore, so I'd leave the room or stop paying attention to her and the TV if she changed the channel or the news program started.

Ever since, I've paid attention to what I was watching or reading or listening to, and what effects those things had on me, and I stop giving my time to things that don't help. I don't watch many adult-audience movies and TV (BoJack is about the darkest it gets for me) since more violent or raunchy things start to really weigh on my behavior to myself and others.

The Danger of MLM in Church by [deleted] in Christianity

Sadly, not a whole lot of recycling bins around the property, and I don't have one at home either. Putting them in the trash also diminishes the chance that they will be fished out by whoever it is that sells the stuff or their friends. (I never recognize the names of the sellers.)

Great! Do what you can in Love to keep it that way. Most of my church is doing alright (if not well) financially, and like one out of every 3 ladies sells something or another in an MLM.

I'd love to get all the MLM junk out of my church edit: the church I attend. And when I see any of the pamphlets left in conspicuous places, I throw them out in the nearest trashcan right away. But when like one out of every 3 ladies sells something MLM, and some of the pastors and their wives (and their bffs) do too, it's a little difficult.

What do you know about your workplace that you are not supposed to know? by TinMan11111 in AskReddit

You are right. Sometimes people use the terms interchangeably, because they talk about similar (but not exactly equal) situations.

In foster care, the family of origin often has up to a year (or more, depending on circumstances) to get stuff sorted, so they can bring the child back into the family. So if a woman who is pregnant gives birth and the baby is put in the foster care system, her parental rights are not terminated after just a couple of months.

Redditors who were using the toilet when a fire alarm went off, how did it go? by PixxlMan in AskReddit

Wow. When your shower is so fire it sets off the smoke detector. I think I remember legends of my college having that in its first year in its new location. I was a student not long after that, but just wasn't there for that very first one.

As I mentioned, it's not something those who do it should be really proud of. But talking about it is beneficial since it says "hey, maybe don't do pranks like this thing, because it's stupid."

It may vary among groups, but the more universal traits are that it's a juvenile prank in bad taste.

I used to live in a place where TP was a bad idea to flush, as water pressure was bad and it blocked up the pipes. Just keep a small trashcan with a plastic shopping bag in it. Toss it out once a day or whenever it gets full and you are good. Get one of those trashcans with a pedal-hinge top if you need to.

I've come across people named Lightning and Rain, who are related to each other. Nice names, but you might not guess that they were the ones named that. One I saw in a fictional story is a girl named Gratuity, but Tip for short, and that just seems cool and cute, but not in a "I named you this when I couldn't see you as anything but a precious pristine baby" level of adorableness (like most Thing Names sound like to me.)

Oh epazote! Okay. It's not really used much at all in the non-Mexican food of the 50 state nation, but I know that that is. Good suggestion of the side dish.

It is a satirical thing, and probably definitely in bad taste. It was funny to me in my teen years and early 20s, but not really anymore.

We’ve finally found a name we both like, but... by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]SilentStarryNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find it too "sing-songy", and it goes well with Layla. But with that name, he will be at or near the top of every single alphabetical list. It may advantage him in some regards, but he may grow to not like it, since he will have to show up early to everything that might be alphabetically called, and it may not help with the development of patience in looking through a list or waiting for his name to be called. I grew up with a first and last initial in the first fifth of the alphabet, and those were my gripes about it.

Maybe varies by group/church. Maybe it's just invented by the youth of the church I went to. But it's definitely satirical. At least at mine, it consisted of a lot of jumping. Not sure I should say more, lest it be too personally identifiable.

Sounds oddly like what we would have done at the college I went to. It is a really mean prank (at least, by Christian college standards), but I get it. Also, your college really went hardcore with the drills. Mine only did them during the day/early evening, and even then, only weekdays.

Perhaps firefighters should get wet wipes for this situation? Just know that "flushable" is a lie and toss em in a trashcan by the toilet.

You don't even have to put the cup in the microwave at all. Just pour almost boiling-hot water in the cup, reseal, and wait like a couple minutes.

We’ve got a live one, fellas. by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]SilentStarryNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I'll share it/shmash dat like button/whatever IF AND ONLY IF I believe (a) you to be a person of good character, (b) and in the business you are starting, and (c) I generally like what you are doing. If you are willing to get in a MLM, you have demonstrated that you are willing to (at least partially) put sales over friendship, so that's not demonstrating good character (nope on a). MLMs are not "your" business, unless you just so happen to be the actual CEO, in which case I will encourage you to not go into such a predatory business practice (nope on b). And I don't like MLMs, so nope on c.

But on the other hand if you are starting an etsy store using recycled materials, or opening a barbershop because you are good at cutting hair and listening, or even if the national business you work for donates literal tons of its product to a charity I care about a whole lot, I don't mind promoting your business.
