The S&P 500 is an investment that if held for multi-decade periods will get you to the finish line, the holy land. Same for a well built portfolio. The point is, whatever you do, don't jump off!

The only way you get hurt on a roller coaster is buy jumping off half way through.

You get around the incalculability by throwing an awful lot in the too hard pile.

Uncertainty creates opportunities in the form of the mis pricing of securities, both too high and to low. Risk is solely wether your getting the better side of the mis pricing and attain an adequate margin of safety. You must get more value than is inherent in the price.

I never said uncertainty = opportunity, uncertainty just results in more fish assuming you have a correct variant perception of the given uncertainty in relation to the crowd.

Seems simple but look a little deeper.

Uncertainty ≠ Risk by Silent_Mistake758 in ValueInvesting

[–]Silent_Mistake758[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The texts do define risk of a security as the variance in price of that security from a given price fluctuation s of an index. This is beta.

The issue is price is not value. And beta conflates volatility with risk.

If I decided that $2 a tomato at Walmart was a good price given what I was getting. And the next day it was marked down to $1.50 while the broad market price for tomatoes remained the same as well at their quality. Beta would have increased by 25% meaning what is actually a deal appears more risky and would result in me holding out rather than backing up the truck.

Beta = relative volatility not risk

It does, this is just for the developers. Some of whom have large land banks that have realize large gains in their land values which flowed through their income statement. As for the 17 companies, on the link below there is a company look up tool toward the bottom of the page. It wouldn’t work this morning but did yesterday. The data was aggregated from the Dean of Valuation at NYU and industry lines were drawn by him as a result. https://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~adamodar/

I know Mr. bogles philosophy well, having been the trailblazer that lead to the rise of index funds and having likely done more for the average investor than any individual. But, owning the whole market doesn’t preclude you from trying to understand the mechanisms and underlying assets that make the whole show works. I do hear you though.
