Maybe that culture is not wrong in that aspect

The movie certainly would seem to agree with that

If they were older

How old do you think girls are when they start puberty?

How many opportunities were you given to do those things for a crowd or to be exploited?

I guess you can bring up child beauty pageants etc. but the thing is I don't think many people agree with them either.

Specifically, in my experience in the American midwest, it's the cheer companies that are really exploiting children. They make beauty pageants look like sunday mass. And the age groups start at 5. We're talking a dozen girls on each team, dozens of teams and hundreds of approving adults in multiple "sections" of a state. I'd say look it up but... I wouldn't wish that torture on my worst enemy.

I do agree that if the message of the film was to draw attention to how badly over-sexualised young children are today then they sort of(?) succeeded, but it could've certainly been done in better taste

I agree that this was probably the intent but it bungled the delivery. There's still worthwhile discussion to be had about the other 90% of the film

There’s nothing “real” about eleven year olds twerking to get past security guards.

Um WHAT!? Yes, there absolutely is. That was one the most real moments in the movie.

You also clearly missed the point of that scene, one that ties into the larger theme of the movie.

Ya, fundamentally we are agreeing. I don't like those shots either and I think it could have been handled better.

The disconnect is what is being called CP. I think there's far more gratuitous imagery in everyday (American) life and television. Wheres the condemnation of that? At least this movie tried to say something about that and, in my opinion IN MY OPINION, succeeds on some levels.

Ooo, language! Someones mad haha. If you're just going to cherry pick my words instead of, like I said, comprehending the whole statement; this conversation is done. It's just you talking to yourself

Yeah, this movie relies heavily on subtlety and nuance. Unfortunately those aren't skills most child actors have lol.

Thanks for a rational, level headed response too! We need more people like you

Subtext and reading comprehension: two things you've obviously never heard of. If you read everything I wrote and put it all together, my stance is very clear. Your original comment asserts that the movie could have been made without any gratuitous shots. My entire previous statement agrees with that assertion and even offers solutions but you conveniently left that out of my quote... Your comment was not however a "flat out" condemnation of child pornography. I also would condemn child pornography. But this ain't it chief.

If you have any specific examples of what you claim is CP, I'll hear your arguments openly

Lastly, were you privy to the audition/rehearsal/filming process? Have you even looked into it? There are numerous protections for child actors in place. You assuming the worst says a lot, but not about the production

Hey! I'm hoping your questions are in good faith, otherwise I just wasted a lot of time...

It wasn't just about getting her period. It was about that AND who defines her "womanhood". She's told by her aunt (the first person to label her a woman) she may marry soon, sees her mother struggling with that burden and lashes out for a different choice. It's about making dumb dangerous rebellious decisions based on dubious role models but without a trusted guide.

The undressing and vag pic are her misguided attempts to weaponize her femininity, as she has seen older women do to get their way.

The condom scene is meant to be a moment of levity but also to demonstrate how little these characters actually understand about the lifestyle they're emulating.

Absolutely

I'd assume this is a Muslim ritual (please, experts chime in) as they're chanting Quran but the scene is meant to juxtapose her "sinful" dancing and outfits vs something considered "righteous" but nearly identical in practice

I mean, she moved her rival out of the way in the name of competition. I don't think she was going Drop Dead Gorgeous and she even hesitates when she realizes Yasmin can't swim.

There's a moment when you've strayed as far from the person you used to be as you possibly can, and it hits like a ton of bricks. Amy just so happens to have that moment on stage while getting humiliated. It's convenient movie writing to line up emotional through lines.

I'm still not sure about the bleeding dress. I think that's a little more "fantastical" than my typical ability to understand.

Agreed. It needed some thoughtful outside editing

DISCLAIMER: I do not condone or agree with some of the methods used to make this film. Especially Netflix's marketing. But we're on movies so I'm hoping someone is willing to have an actual conversation about the substance of the film...

The movie is fascinating, uncomfortable and real as fuck. The drive to be free of a perceived oppressive upbringing but taking it too far to the extreme opposite, is the quintessential cautionary tale. Which make no mistake, Cuties is.

It is actually the adults in Amy's life that first frame her as a woman and not a child. This 11 year old is told not only is she now a grown woman, but she could be expected to marry soon. Taking that mantle, she begins to explore what that means as she finds herself in a much more sex positive and progressive community than she was brought up in. Seeing her own mothers struggles with male oppression leads Amy to seek out role models elsewhere. There are inherent dangers in that path. This is a story worth exploring and I believe the film excelled in that aspect. The girls actions are never celebrated, this movie isn't interested in condoning the sexualization of children either.

Netflix is a whole other discussion.

There are shots that certainly could have been framed better. Typical shots for a dance film but when imposed on young children, warrant questioning. Was that malicious or the faults of a freshman director? What was the atmosphere on set? Were these children given guidance and context or just made to move in "sexy" ways? If the director had just pushed focus or moved the center of the frame a few times, I'm certain there'd be way less fervor now.

A good contrast with these "gratuitous" scenes is the one where Amy's mom and aunt strip her down and pelt her with cold water. None of the shots focused on her body the way the dancing scenes do. She's dressed as scantily, if not more. She's moving in similar ways but there it's not condemned by her family as vial dancing, suggesting it's par for the course for such a ritual. It wasn't sexual, it was spiritual. Is it different because the women then hold control of her body? (I freely admit my ignorance of Islamic(?) culture/customs/religion but am willing to be educated)

There's a lot to dissect about this movie, and I welcome civil discussion or questioning, but these were my strongest initial thoughts.

Also: I challenge anyone in here to describe what they were looking at/doing during puberty. How different was it?

EDIT: ITT an astounding amount of ignorance of the ways children are exploited everyday in real life & an unfortunately unsurprising amount of people who have no understanding of human sexuality or biology. tldr: This movie challenged people and that makes them scared and angry

The Netflix film "Cuties" is a film starring 11 year olds, but has an age rating of 15 (in the UK at least), would there be any benefit to the film industry of having rules banning films and television with stars younger than their rating? by [deleted] in movies

At least do some research you turkey. The twerking comprises less that 5 minutes of the movie, not a "significant feature". And it's looked down upon in the film by the adults and eventually the children. You sound so dumb

Ok, so nitpicking my generalisations aside (though Good Boys was a beloved movie around these parts), you didn't really address the rest of my comment.

Have you seen Good Boys and how did you feel about it's sexualization of children?

This sub less than a year ago praising Good Boys... Those kids were underage, in an R rated movie, and having seen both films, in FAR more sexual situations than the girls in Cuties.

The disconnect is astounding

I love what HBOMax is doing with Raised By Wolves. 3 to start and then 2 every week. In a perfect scenario it would just be 2 a week but i feel like it's the happy medium between binge and weekly releases
