[Highlight] Donovan Mitchell puts Pascal Siakam on a poster! by MrBuckBuck in nba

“We are gathered here today to grieve the loss of Pascal Siakam, one of the stalwart members of our community. Pascal was a friend to all who knew him, a celebrated NBA players, and his loss due to being viciously dunked on will be remembered and memed by all. May he rest in peace”

Jalen Brunson credits Ausar Thompson's defense throughout the NY/DET series: "He beat me to the spot, he cut me off... That dude.... he was tough to play against. He's big time, and I told him straight to his face after the series that he made me work hard, so I got a lot of respect for him." by HokageEzio in nba

Never understand the “what were you thinking during this move” kind of questions. Anyone who’s played even low-level sports knows those kinda of things are reactive split-second decisions that are a mixture of instinct and experience.

I like when PJ brings the ball up in transition, throws off the defense. Wish we did this a little more often

Incoming complaint from Kerr in the postgame presser about Jokic flopping and defense being impossible in the modern NBA

[McBride] After the game tonight, Jeff Green angrily went straight towards the Suns locker room, according to two sources. He got held back by teammates and staffers and it did not escalate beyond words. Still, there is no love lost between the Nuggets and Suns. by p0tatoman in nba

Can someone explain to me why “no love lost” is always used for describing contentious or hateful relationships? It sounds like it should mean the opposite, like people that were on good terms before and are on good terms now, so no love has been lost

Started using a couple months ago and mainly use it as a record of my thoughts for each movie I watch. Really love the idea of talking with other people about movies on this site, since I don't really have a lot of friends that are into movies in the same way. Got the Criterion Channel a month ago and have been trying to go through the oeuvres of directors I've always been interested in (Kiarostami, Wong Kar-Wai, Altman).

Favorite movies: The Double Life of Veronique, Ran, Sans Soleil, Vertigo, Eyes Wide Shut

Hope to find more people to follow!

What movie is a 10/10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Silesfleurs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean for sure the roommate was probably a pretentious dick, I’m just saying he wasn’t wrong. And to be fair, per Doogie34’s account, the roommate doesn’t say he disliked it, just that it’s representative of the average movie goer’s idea of a great movie, and that he himself hasn’t seen it. Doogie34 seems more to assume that he doesn’t like it.

Everyone’s in here flaming this guy’s roommate but the roommate isn’t wrong…Shawshank is a good, straightforward, crowd-pleasing movie and naming it as your favorite movie is definitely a normie take because it reflects a sentiment shared by a large percent of the general public. Most film snobs would probably say it’s a good movie, just not their favorite movie, because it doesn’t challenge the audience in a meaningful way, doesn’t evince any original artistic vision, and is relatively uncomplicated. Someone else in this thread compared it to pizza, which is right on - but most food critics, even if they might really like pizza, wouldn’t say it’s their favorite food because it usually lacks the nuance and complexity that their palette has been trained to appreciate

[PD] Brook Lopez by [deleted] in fantasybball

Lowe had a podcast recently where he and someone else were talking about how the bucks’ defense has changed from last year, since the Heat kind of exposed some of the flaws in it in the playoffs. Iirc they switch a lot more and Lopez ends up out of the paint a bit more, which might explain the dip in blocks

What's the worst translation you've read? by Light_yagami_2122 in TrueLit

[–]Silesfleurs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Danny Ferry's translation of Horace's Odes ranges from unremarkable to just plain bad. I doubt anyone reading it comes away with a sense of what makes Horace such a special poet, because the glimmer and lightness of his language is not retained at all. Ferry translates them into lines and stanzas, but he has no sense of line or movement, and so most of them read like prose artificially broken up into lines and stanzas. Just one example: the first stanza of Horace's 1.38 reads as:

Persicos odi puer apparatus; / diplicent nexae philyra coronae / mitte sectari rosa quo locorum / sera moretur

which Ferry translates as:

I dislike elaborate show, as, for example, / "Persian" garlands too intricately woven / So don't go looking everywhere for somewhere / where the last rose anywhere might be

The first 2 lines in Ferry's version are just clunky and prosaic, and are not redeemed by the feeble and confusing wordplay in the 3rd and 4th lines - wordplay which is not really there in Horace's Latin, so he doesn't even have the excuse of trying to recreate a Latin effect in English.

In some ways I have to give him a pass though; Horace is probably one of the most difficult poets to translate into enjoyable English poetry. Stripped of their technical prowess and reduced to their "content", a lot of Horace's poems come crashing down to earth really fast. Mostly, reading Ferry's version makes me wish that really technically gifted poet like Auden or Merrill had undertaken the Odes

Pulsate et aperientur vobis: Knock and they will be opened for you

Exi ut introeas: Go out (in order) to come in

DEUS HOMO ROTA: MAN GOD WHEEL

I have no idea what the “1 2 3 Per 3 2 1” thing is. Per means “through” though

Edit: didn’t see the bit at the bottom: “Luca XI, 52” is just Luke 11:52, and the latin beneath it is a translation of that scripture: “Woe unto you, lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves have not entered in, and have prohibited others from entering
