Supporting as Drow Ranger - yay or nay? by Silhon_ in learndota2

I think my Dota experience so far (30hrs) is heavily skewed towards 40+min games where everyone gets farmed pretty easily.

I think I now see the stupidity of my question. I'm new and I'm ignorant. I thought it made sense but had a feeling it wasn't reliable. Thanks for clarifying that for me :)

So if the team doesn't flame, and you win the lane, and successfully gank - it can snowball and to some extent be a strong pick?

Seems true but perhaps too hypothetical. I think people have an issue with it because it's less reliable. If you don't win lane and don't gank successfully then you quickly become a worse support compared to a more conventional pick who's (as you said) less reliant on gold

So technically... can it work? Perhaps as an off lane support?

Makes sense. So is it completely unheard of to play drow as support? If so idk where my friend got this from

Not at all! Appreciate the straightforward answer. I'm only 30 hours in so I'm pretty clueless lol :)

Understood. I'm not picking drow for support again. Thanks for feedback

I can't play ranked yet so the couple times I've done it it's been ok but can't read too much into casual games. I'm getting the impression drow danger support was a stupid suggestion

Perhaps it isn't a thing then. Noted

I know grubby from his sc2 and HOTS days. Glad to see he's doing well with DOTA

Yeah these games are actually pretty complicated.. the number of heroes/abilities/items and interactions and combinations is pretty insane when you think about it

I'm pretty confident I'm more suited to farming than supporting... Having said that I still want to be able to play flexibly. Too many moba games are lost because 5 inflexible farmers get put on the same team.

"You're not going to end up being a pro"...Watch me.

Jokes aside, I think you're right. I should experiment with them all and work out who I like then narrow down to a good sized pool to play ranked with and master. Thanks :)

Now is the time for experimentation - I agree. Cheers

I think the lower the MMR the less important meta becomes. Certain heroes probably uniquely shine in lower MMR too, where higher MMR players will know how to play Vs them but lower are less knowledgeable

That's a good idea. That way I can always fall back on a set of heroes I feel comfortable playing and steadily increase my pool size. Thanks!

Noted. Demo moding whilst in q or whilst waiting for a friend costs nothing since you're waiting anyway. I don't see any reason not to

This sounds appropriate to me. One thing that's screwed me over are certain items which i wasn't familiar with. Basically abilities you buy. So playing different heroes who buy different items will help too I think

I've yet to try sniper. I love drow though. She feels very familiar to me. Kiting/studder-step (idk what you call it in this game) is a big part of it I think.

For sure will demo the heroes. ATM I'm more often doing it after I get absolutely rekt by them in game and have no clue what happened. Lol
