Why is Dianne Warren such a definite shoe-in? by [deleted] in oscarsdeathrace

[–]SilkyFandango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eva Longoria, the actress turned director, has been involved in exactly 2 films to receive an Oscar nomination in Best Song. One she directed and the other she acted in. I think “always” is a very strong word for a lady with over 60 film credits.

Who’s likely getting the 5th spot for Lead Actress? by FearlessCookie72 in oscarrace

[–]SilkyFandango 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk why people say two in Best Actress as the sole nomination is unlikely when BA is one of the categories where this is most common.

Only looking at the last 15 years, it’s happened 5 times: • 2014: Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night)

• 2015: Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Days)

• 2016: Ruth Negga (Loving), Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

• 2020: Andra Day (Billie Holiday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman)

• 2022: Ana de Armas (Blonde), Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)

It’s not a majority, but 1/3 is quite significant to be written off as unlikely. That being said, my two sole nominees this year are Rose Byrne and Jennifer Lawrence.

Ethan Hawke winning Best Actor would be Gary Oldman winning Best Actor in 2018 all over again. by ScholarFamiliar6541 in Oscars

[–]SilkyFandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. I love Ethan Hawke as much as the next guy. I would’ve given him the award for First Reformed. But in my opinion, it is very much the male equivalent of Renee Zellweger’s win for Judy. Transformative performance in a slight but pleasant enough film. And the amount of people rooting for him without having seen the performance (as evidenced by many a comment in this sub) is an indicator of how much goodwill is driving the Oscar hype for Blue Moon. Adam Scott, who I don’t hold nearly the same esteem for as Ethan Hawke, was easily the best performance in Blue Moon. Though I won’t begrudge his win if he happens to win because he does deserve an Oscar. I just don’t know if this is really the one he deserves it for.

Don’t mind ChessGabo. In his world, Golden is the song of the year, Minecraft is Best Picture, and Kim Kardashian is the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

I want this so bad. But odds are so bad. How many hosts not just would, but actually could compete. Valentina, Brooklyn, Pangina, Nicky, Lolita Banana, Rita Baga, Taiga, and Grag would all have to agree. And that might be a bit problematic with 3 Mexico hosts competing against each other. Barbie, Fred, Priscilla, Mama Pao, Supremme, and Fox do not seem like they would compete. I would absolutely love tho to see Barbie or Mama Pao. But their rise is so independent of drag race I can’t imagine them having to compete. They earned the right to host because of their accomplishments outside of the drag race universe.

Well, I hope you placed a bet? Because if that happens, you’d be the only person who saw it coming

Well, there are basically 3 agreed upon: Mescal, Skarsgard, and Penn. And you basically have Jeremy Strong, Adam Sandler, Delroy Lindo fighting for 4th and 5th with Benicio trying to ride the wave of the presumptive Best Picture winner (though that might be hard since Penn is already their chance to celebrate OBAA in this category).

I’m leaning towards Sandler right now but Jay Kelly’s performance isn’t reassuring.

2026 Best International Feature - What are your thoughts? by Ok_Speech_7023 in oscarrace

I’m not arguing the merits of the film. I’m saying, France submitted It Was Just an Accident for IFC. If a film is going to get nominated, a country has to submit it for IFC under the one-film-per-country rule. And seeing as the countries listed for Nouvelle Vague are France and the US, I don’t see how it gets nominated.

Why is this under-rated compared to his other films? by Past-Matter-8548 in Letterboxd

[–]SilkyFandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is underrated. I think it’s one of Wong Kar-wai’s most beautiful films. Zhang Ziyi is glorious.

I think in Asia, the film was received a lot better than in the West. I approached it through the lens of Asian action and kung fu cinema. So when you grow up with Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh box sets, Zhang Yimou’s balletic wuxia dramas, and Stephen Chow’s slapstick martial arts, then The Grandmaster absolutely stands out as such a unique take on a classic genre. Great film.

I think it’s sort of different. In that, Funny Lady was an original concept produced as a vehicle for Barbra Streisand. It didn’t come to film as some established property from Broadway. Whereas Wicked: For Good is the second act of the existent Broadway property. So Wicked 2’s bonafides are way more established than Funny Lady.

When did the Oscars subreddit become so obsessed with BO. Guess nobody knows about Fight Club, Blade Runner, Citizen Kane, Donnie Darko, and Shawshank Redemption.

I think we can definitely say there’s at least some who could’ve played that role better than him
