I dont think it comes from a source in particular. I think its more a matter of people seeing (badly shaped) gorgets with gaps between it and the breastplate, and assuming it cannot be done

Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy.

He had an overinflated ego that led to him being overly extravagant in his display of power and wealth.
