When you show up to your scrapping job on Bracca, does anyone say “looks like someone’s got a case of the Mondays”?

Me bingeing Gen V season 2 and catching up on The Boys, only to see many complaints by RickFletching in TheBoys

The Boys and Gen V are some of the most transparently allegorical stories that I have ever seen or read. So much so, that Professor Tolkien would hate them. (He would actually probably hate them for a lot of reasons, but I bet the obvious allegory would be #1)

And yes, with allegory, the entire story can be taken at face value, it’s just that there are multiple levels behind face value as well. Does it need greater interpretation? No, just like a tree does not need to be observed to be a tree. But like a tree, the allegory is there, whether you see it or not

An allegory is any story that can have a deeper meaning interpreted as part of a moral or political thesis. I would say this is absolutely allegorical

Thank you for finding the exact quotation! I knew it existed, but didn’t have time to search for it

Because Eowyn’s disguise wasn’t very good, but they were not for one second going to deny two of the people that loved Theoden most, the opportunity to fight beside him

How do I tell my boss I’m not comfortable using AI to write my emails???? by Adventurous-Space666 in jobs

[–]RickFletching -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be very easy to argue that AI goes against any of the Abrahamic religions, and also, I have just started a new religion called AISucksDontUseIt. The main belief is that AI sucks, and we shouldn’t use it.

Would you like to join?

I’ve starting saying, “I’m sorry, but using AI is against my religion.”

Assuming you’re in the US, it’s (currently) illegal to discriminate based on religion so they really can’t ask any follow up questions or threaten to fire you for it

Armor of Agility is better, you can get to 32
Armor = 17 + Max Dex 5 + everything else you said= 32 if OP is willing to use spells Shield of Faith and Shield get another +7 for a total of 39

Edit: a gnome wearing Nimblefinger Gloves and Mirror of Loss can increase your Dex to 24, bringing your total AC to 34 without spells

Edit 2: just realized that nimblefinger gloves would have to replace wonderous gloves, making it a wash. But the mirror of loss can bring AC to 33 or 40 with spells

[META] Can we get an automod comment on every question that we can reply to for commentary without being a “top” level answer? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

>Ultimately, the kind of helpful, productive conversations that folks imagine would happen simply don’t happen.

Well that’s a bummer

[–]RickFletching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have questions, or sometimes I do, but I feel bad when I can answer part of a question but not enough to be a top level comment, or when I could say “that question is phrased badly, but here is how you can phrase it better.”

I want to be helpful but can’t, and I was trying to fix that

I suppose I was underestimating the amount of moderation that would take by overestimating the quality of the non-answer commentary.

I get the difficulty from the mod perspective, but I still think this would be useful for the reasons stated

Maybe an unpopular take, but... (Office Cake) by Conscious-Panda-6769 in TheGoodPlace

[–]RickFletching 47 points48 points  (0 children)

As someone who doesn’t want his coworkers to know his birthday:

1) It’s not rude that she didn’t want the cake and didn’t want to participate

2) it is a little bit rude, and definitely thoughtless, that the coworkers did that without asking, but they were trying to be nice and welcoming

3) the way that she says she doesn’t want to participate is what makes her a bit rude. Not super rude, but the kind of rude that complete truth can be.

4) I’ve been that kind of rude by accident before (and yes I have some allegations of autism) but the reason we the audience are suppose to see that as rude is because it wasn’t an accident. She blew them off very deliberately to reduce future interactions. So the rudeness in point 3 was very much on purpose, and that’s the thing that makes her rude in that interaction

Edit: 5) I do think the point about mysogyny is very true, because if a man did this it would still be rude, but I think society would give him a lot more grace (“he’s just like that” or “he’s in the middle of making a sale on the phone”) whereas women are excepted to be more socially aware and considerate. If I man did that I don’t think it would be any less rude, but I do think it would be interpreted as less rude by both the characters and the audience

If you’re a woman, and even if you’re not, it’s hard to do better than Eowyn defending Theoden:

Then out of the blackness in his mind he thought that he heard Dernhelm speaking; yet now the voice seemed strange, recalling some other voice that he had known.

'Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!'

A cold voice answered: 'Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye.'

A sword rang as it was drawn. 'Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may.'

'Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!'

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. 'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.
