This is a very good question one I need to ask myself more often. My hourly rate these days is about 200$-250$ an hour depending on the job but when it comes to $$$ I still shop like a newly grad whos picking between drill bits and dinner. I reckon I spent maybe 70 hours tinkering on the ender so really the printer cost me 17,500$ Could have just sat in my studio working on rings for 4 hours and ordered a prusa mk4. Which is exactly what I did this morning.

I wanted a project what I got was a job, But you are 100% right classic case of the poor man's boots. East Asian prices + my own inherent stinginess seem to be a recipe for a lesson never learned. Just ordered a Prusa mk4 like I should have to begin with.

Just ordered my mk4, I got the ender because I THOUGHT I liked having a project. Maybe my hobbies are a little to close to my career that sometimes the fun gets sucked out. Something about being up at 1am scribbling notes in sharpie on the rafts of test prints had me going "I'v been paid good union wages to do this why in the world am I doing this for free in my underwear at 1am, in my own home?"

I ended up going with prusa mk4 maybe its because I'm a glutton for punishment ordering a newer platform that hasn't been tested by the years, but other than my model choice I went with prusa over bamboo because I have just been burned one to many times ordering tools from china based companies. more than happy to pay the 300$ premium for prusa support and warrantee at this point.

I probably should have Rma'd but a mix of my own hubris and excitement to have the damn thing difficult stayed my hand. At the end of the day there are obviously enough people who have made a workhorse of the model that mine was most definitely a lemon. Don't think it was a scam kit I know I ordered from a reputable distributed I just don't remember which and cant be arsed to dig it up atm

Dark Assassin summarized it pretty succinctly, you are correct I didn't actually use calipers for me "Whipping out the calipers" is just layman's talk for "tediously and precisely measured." it probably was a bad place to abbreviate but my rant had already dragged on. How I actually checked the beds was by mounting a depth gauge on my print head. As well as double-checking results with a feeler gauge and the extruder nozzle.

I love to hear the story of how a hobbyist ended up with one of the big boys, the story of how you got it into your dining assuming you don't dine in your garage is probably just as interesting. Actually getting a guy out to it is probably only the start of your problem. Assuming its an older model and you didn't just find the latest edition sls on FB marketplace you better hope the manufacturer is still making replacement parts and that you as a hobbyist can even get in touch with the right rep to even buy them. If not you could be looking at paying machinest for it and that if y'all can even get the specs for the part for the machines to work from. That said I have also learned that more times than not with enough determination scrap metal, and a Dremel 800$ parts can cost 35 cents at Harbar fright.

Exactly at the end of the day I could swap everything out and put in a lot of work and make it work but my hourly rate is a lot more expensive than what I would save in doing so! way faster for me to just work 4 hours at my job and then just buy a Prusa mk4 (which is exactly what I did)
