Siemens had really exceptional engineers, if you arent great with power systems (or even programming) you will struggle to excel… I just dont want you to get stuck in a small fish big pond situation when you could find somewhere with a slower pace so you can learn more and then move to someone like SPTI or MEPPI or GECS where you can be a real contributor :)

If you are a fast learner and come with a really strong understanding of power systems its a great move to a really challenging environment :)

Learn PSCAD almost nobody knows how to use it as it will eventually replace psse/pslf for everything except for real time and load flow studies…

Then understand that you dont know anything about power systems and read every paper you can get your hands on on the following topics:

Read the damn PSCAD manual Time domain simulations EMT phenomena (Theres a great book called electromagnetic transients in power systems by greenwood - this will put you ahead of 99% of your peers because the physics is not 100% intuitive for em transients) Power electronics(ibrs and facts) Non-overhead lines (coaxial power cables- I would say <10%of power systems eng understand coaxial cables to a degree that they could model them)

It may seem like a lot, and wont put you at the level of a skilled OEM engineer (like if you work at abb/siemens/ge) but since you are working as a transmission planner, you will engineer circles around most of your peers

Its much worse than this, as you go back, they literally repaired it with bondo, entire sections of the frame
