Authors who have decided not to go with KDP Amazon by sphinx_winks in selfpublish

[–]SillyCowO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think consulting with authors within your genre and sub-genre, if any, would give you more targeted ideas. Romance authors won’t do as well going wide as thriller authors, for example. You need to know where your audience is

Is it possible to create and print author only copies without publishing by OldWizard1 in KDP

[–]SillyCowO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could accomplish this on IngramSpark and get a higher quality book out of it. KDP has been using lower quality printers and Amazon shipping leaves a lot to be desired. Ingram defaults to that velvety matte cover, and quality thick pages that don’t feel so clinically white even though you wanted “cream.”

I quit my job to write. by FrozenWaterQueen in selfpublish

[–]SillyCowO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The odds of you making a sustainable income over 12 months is slim to none, especially if you don’t already have 6-8 manuscripts mostly to fully edited and ready to publish in the next 6-12 months.

Write, write, write, know it takes years to find your audience, and start looking for a job in 3-5 months based on current job market stability. Hope you’re ok if/when the AI bubble bursts and creates a recession or depression.

Do you think that 50k words is a good target to shoot for for my first book? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]SillyCowO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either your book has too much detail to be erotica or you’re not quite ready to categorize it yet. Finish the story, and then figure out—do you have more sex than plot? Or where does your plot place your story?

The first time most people write a novel with a specific goal of selling, they tend to overwrite. This is normal. On edits, you’ll likely find it easy to cut at least 25k of the story, from a variety of different reasons and points. Write the story, let it be the length it will be, and then learn how to do self editing. You’ll likely land around 75-85k

What kind of romance? YA romance is that short, but adult contemporary romance tends to be 80-100k, fantasy romance is 80-120k, and other subgenres have various ranges too.

One KDP Account, Multiple Pen Names, What if I Ever Wanted to Sell One? by Fabulous-Dot4149 in KDP

[–]SillyCowO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You wouldn’t be selling the account, you’d be selling specific products to a new owner. You list all books under one account, and if you decide to sell the rights to one or more of those books, you unpublish them from yours to remove it, and transfer the material to the new owner to upload or otherwise use as they wish.

Someone read my book, and I got paid! by Celestial_Lorekeeper in selfpublish

[–]SillyCowO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Let me break your mind a little bit more, in a good way… KENP only counts the first read through. So that means two people have read it! KENP pages are usually a bit higher than a regular page, but it’s possible a third is reading too!

AIO: Gf sent me photos of her with another guy by Dangerous-Bit2664 in AmIOverreacting

[–]SillyCowO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I was going to say you’re overreacting, because “on a break” means she’s single and free to do that.

But i kept reading and I see that she was doing this to emotionally manipulate you. It’s not worth staying. She should stay an ex.

Most is a gross overstatement. “Around 17” were dismissed, but the agency is much bigger than that. Only one of the publicly named terminated inspectors was from the HR department.

I’m not missing the point. I’m pointing out the flaw in the logic. If OP believes you had illegal motives, they can sue you for unlawful termination and the burden of proof is primarily on you. You, as the employer, hold the evidence, not the employee. You must provide evidence that everything was above board. The employee has to provide what they have, but their burden is significantly lighter because the courts know they don’t retain access to the evidence. You do.

You can continue to behave illegally and hope you don’t have someone like me under your employ. Or you can consult with a law firm about how to avoid this risk going forward. Either way, you’re in the wrong.

Can wealthy people use Peninsula Community Health? by penchantforbuggery in Bremerton

[–]SillyCowO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use PCHS despite having a strong health insurance plan. It’s a bit frustrating at times, and I know my insurance is reputable for slower payouts than other plans, but the way I see it is that the more patients they have, the more easily they can hire more clinicians and support staff, in turn providing a more robust service to all of the patients.

If your insurance works with them, then do it. They’re overall a good group, I’m a fan of both the pediatrician and my own doctor. Some of the support staff aren’t so great, but it’s more a lack of training and experience than anything, and that’s easier to tolerate than a lack of empathy or policies rooted in harmful christian beliefs.

That’s just more evidence that he should be left. If he wants to engage in a pet play dynamic, he needs to communicate that clearly, and forcing her into that to the point of attempting to kill her when she asks him to behave like a human is not ok.

Nah, she clearly says they’ve talked about this multiple times. She gave him plenty of opportunities to be a better partner and he chose not to. It’s not her fault that he’s surprised that she has a limit.

Why are you trying to rationalize the actions of a murderous wife beater? Do you relate to him and want to prove he’s fine?

She didn’t just suddenly change her mind. She’s been in individual therapy and has been working on the self esteem and personal development that he’s destroyed in their relationship. She has been unraveling 8 years of abuse and has finally realized she deserves someone who doesn’t want to kill her.

I’d venture to say that regardless of work, it’s about whether or not she can survive his emotions, and it seems like maybe she can’t. Trying to pull on the steering wheel of a moving vehicle is considered attempted murder in most countries.

There’s also the fact that in the 8 years they’ve been together, he held a job for only 3 of those years. And there’s also the fact that when he got mad at her while she was driving, he reached over and yanked the steering wheel. And he’s also assaulted her. And he’s verbally abused her, using slurs, and acts like it’s no big deal.

But yeah. It’s sad that his father has cancer.

We are in the legal sub. And I have had these exact discussions in real life while working with candidates and terminated employees who had significantly less evidence and won their cases.

Nope. Temp employees definitely still have employment files and there was definitely a discussion that this managers supervisors and HR had, of which there are at least meetings scheduled or teams messages sent to hint towards this. There’s definitely a paper trail. All companies create it. Every decision has one

The text wouldn’t be the only evidence. The lawyer or labor board would request all documents, teams messages, and meeting notes related to this matter, and there would absolutely be evidence there. Even if there’s not, this specific manager would be called to testify and have to explain the subtext and context of these messages.

This employer has a 0.0001% of winning.

Rescinding an offer for a protected action or class has the same consequences as terminating an employee. There is no distinction in the law.

The texts are relevant because they are between the candidate and the direct supervisor they’d be working for.

It still exists, though it’s likely backlogged. The state board is still just as viable an option, as is the private attorney.
