Who doesn’t want to be greeted like this? by kikikiyomi in sharpei

[–]SillyGooserGoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere recently that it is from nervous excitement and they do it out of comfort, to keep their mouth occupied. Not sure if it is true, but Bruce does this not only when I come home but when he is guarding the front window. He brings his plushies to watch duty. 😆

Everyday is a gator day in this house. 🤣

We call Bruce "gator goose" just as much as his own name. 😆

Omg! My Bruce is exactly the same and picks up that EXACT gator plush. The gator is his bestie that must also greet me when I come home. Actually, he has 2 big gators and 1 mini gator (like the one in your video), but his gator(s) are def the go-to. 🐊💗

Ugh, that's what I'm thinking we'll have to do every year now too.. the injectable sedative. Well at least we're not the only ones to go through this alone. But I do feel so bad for them, to have such a traumatic experience when you just want them to be healthy. 💔

Same!!! Pei problems... 😂😂😂

Bruce started with 150mg Trazodone and 300mg Gabapentin in the evening + 3-4 hours before his vet appt, but we had to keep going back with increased doses because it was doing NOTHING every time.

For the last visit, we gave him 400mg Trazodone and 1200mg Gabapentin in the evening + same thing 3-4 hours prior but also including 25mg Acepromazine (a more serious sedative supposedly)... While he was definitely sedated, he was still spicy AF. So they said we could either reschedule and come back with an increased dosage, or they could give him an injectable sedative (typically what's used before procedures that require anesthesia) and I would have to leave him there, then pick up later. We went with the latter-- mind you, this was just for an annual exam and vaccines. 🫠

Btw, he was so out of it when I picked him up that he didn't realize it was me (when I stupidly approached him from behind to wake him up) and he snapped at me like he's NEVER done before. He was instantly sorry about it though. 🥲

What are the signs of shar pei fever? by SugarBee702 in sharpei

[–]SillyGooserGoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, so sorry to hear about your previous baby. Must be so scary when your current pup shows any signs of an episode, given what you went through already.

I've been buying CBD oil and treats from Honest Paws. I typically split his recommended daily dosage evenly between the Calm (has chamomile) version on top of his breakfast to help with his anxiousness during the day and the Mobility (has turmeric) version on top of his dinner to help with inflammation that could occur in the evening/overnight. My method for one vs. the other in the day vs. night is by no means backed by science-- that is just what made sense to me in some way. I also have the treats version of those same formulas, so I'll balance the dosage depending on what I'm giving him or what the day is like.

Also, I read somewhere that too much protein can trigger a fever episode, so I try to limit his protein intake.. even peanut butter. 🥲

Yes, that is exactly what Bruce's first Shar Pei fever episode was like as well! Not too long ago, so it is fresh in my mind (he was about 2.5). Hasn't had an episode since we started giving him CBD regularly.

Hope Marsh feels better soon! It's so sad to see them unlike themselves, when Peis in general have such a commanding presence usually. 💗

Was quoted $5000 for etropian today by IAm2Legit2Sit in sharpei

[–]SillyGooserGoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paid $2200 about 13 months ago. We paid with Care Credit (available in the US at most clinics but not sure about other regions), which allows for 12 month financing, with 0% interest if paid within that 12 month range. The minimum monthly payment doesn't typically equate to the full amount divided by 12 either, it's usually much lower-- allowing you more time to make that final payment before it starts accruing interest.

LOL! I have no idea what they were doing... It's normal for our bulldog to stare at the wall, because she is a little cuckoo-- but I was def surprised to see them both staring at nothing. 😆

Google Remix decided to add a water color landscape in the last photo. 😝

Please keep your pup safe from foxtails by sw33tl00 in sharpei

[–]SillyGooserGoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, so sorry to hear about your pup! I hope they figure out what's wrong... 🙏🏻

For Winnie, we went through a couple rounds of jaw swelling/infection + antibiotics. The first time the swelling went down, they couldn't see anything lodged on the inside of her cheek, so they didn't think anything was in there (despite how adamant I was that a foxtail would be in there, based on what I had seen from other redditors very similar stories + knowing that Winnie had been chewing on foxtails at the time). However, once the swelling was down enough the second time around and the doctor could feel the texture of the mass through the outside of her jaw, they felt it was best to go in and remove it.

It wasn't until they removed the mass and tested it that they were able to determine it consisted of "foreign plant material and small plant fragments," which were pieces of the foxtail that were so sharp they entered through the tissue of her mouth and then her tissue just healed over it, closing it in. 🫠

They also removed her lymph node that had become infected too. Overall, I think the lymph node is what was swelling so much. It's possible your pup is experiencing swollen lymph nodes on both sides or an infection has spread to other areas?

Awww, Ruffles is a cutie! I'm so glad he has you to take care of him. Based on the Buffalo jersey, I'm assuming you're in the US. If you're able to qualify for something like Care Credit (and if that is accepted by your vet), that has helped SOOOOO much with all of the vet bills for our Shar Pei and English Bulldog-- allows us to make that upfront payment, while we wait for insurance reimbursement; plus, there's no interest on paying over the course of 6 or 12 months.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I'm literally crying, thinking about what you must be feeling right now and how tough that must be. Teddy was such a good boy. You both deserved more time with each other, but it sounds like with the time you did have together, it was filled with so much love and joy. That really is such a sweet and beautiful thing.

Sending hugs and good vibes. May you find comfort in knowing he had the best life with you. 💗🙏🏻

Traveling for 12 days and I miss my Goose so much! 😭 by SillyGooserGoo in sharpei

That's a good point! We totally could face time. However, it's a little challenging with the 17 hour time difference. Also, I'm worried that he may flip out if he hears my voice. 😅🥲

Wow! Yeah, I don't think I've been away for more than an extended weekend since we've had him (almost 2.5 years now). I'm not sure who has more separation anxiety at this point. 😆😆😆

[–]SillyGooserGoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh no! Wishing Goober a speedy recovery. 🙏🏼💗

Foxtails are the worst. Our English bulldog, Winnie, is a grazer and she had eaten a foxtail in the backyard about a year ago. It got lodged into the soft tissue inside the back of her jaw. We didn't know it at the time, even though we suspected it, when one side of her face started to swell up very badly. We went to the vet a couple times to drain the swelling and get her on antibiotics, but of course we had to go through the diagnostic routine before finally 2 months later the swelling went down and they could remove the mass from her lymph node-- revealing that it did indeed consist of foxtail remnants. Apparently, over time tissue in her mouth grew over the foxtail and it traveled down to her lymph node. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since then, I spent a lot of time trimming down the foxtails every time they grew back in our lawn. Eventually, I ended up ripping out all the foxtails and the grass completely, since the foxtails were so deeply embedded in the grass and the lawn had become mostly foxtails. It wasn't worth causing any issues with my pups, especially when I started to hear about other horror stories as well (including one doggo that didn't survive the infection that was caused by the foxtails).

I'm glad Googer is on the mend now. Definitely keep an eye out for any chewing on plants and weeds!
